What breed that you DON'T have, would you like to have?

I thought this would be interesting because if you ask someone what breed they recommend, they naturally always say the one they've got! So could you tell me what other breed, that you don't own, have you always quite fancied and why?

For eg I have always had standard poodles and think they are fantastic dogs. However I have always liked the look of Greyhounds because they seem very gentle and loving, elegant, clean and I like the idea of a spurt of intense exercise leading to a long afternoon snooze!

What is your secret breed crush?

I have a greater swiss mountain dog, whom we all adore, but would love a whippet , DH wants a lurcher.....

BestIsWest · 26/09/2014 19:48

I would have a Clumber Spaniel, a Briard, a Newfoundlang like a shot but the one my heart yearns for is an Irish Wolfhound. I have a miniature schnauzer.

celestialsquirrels · 26/09/2014 21:34

So funny that so many of us want MASSIVE dogs!

I have a mongrel of indeterminate heritage (never again!) and there whippets. The whippets are fabulous, I'd recommend one to just about anyone wanting a dog Grin

My absolute dream dogs are borzois, I absolutely love them aside from the coat. I just don't do long haired/heavily coated dogs. If they came in a short coated version I'd have one like a shot but I just make do with having cuddles at shows.

Azawakhs are stunning but they're not typical sighthounds (they're traditionally guardians as well as hunters) and I'm not sure the temperament is something I'd like. I've never managed to meet one yet as there are so few in the UK.

Breeds I'd seriously consider are Ibizan hounds (athletic, beautiful, intelligent if not terribly biddable and daft as brushes) and the cirneco dell'etna (nice size, affectionate and a bit more trainable than a lot of sighthounds). I've met both at shows and they're lovely breeds.

Currently have a collie x poodle and a JRT pup.

Always wanted a Bermese Mountain Dog since I met one at Crufts about 10 years ago. Never had enough room.

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 26/09/2014 22:45

I'd like anything pointy.

DramaAlpaca · 26/09/2014 22:51

I'd like a greyhound, but it would take up too much space on the sofa & it would probably chase the cats.

Currently have springers.

lampygirl · 27/09/2014 00:48

I have a Bernese and she's fantastic. We chose her because we spend a lot of time in the Swiss mountains and met a lot and fell in love. Her temperament is good, and when she's a bit older we are hoping to get her as a therapy dog and/or also into carting.

I always wanted a St. Bernard or a Newfie but my DP didn't fancy the slobber. A friend has a Malamute and he is lovely, such a big softie and fab with the local school kids at Christmas etc. My next dog (in a couple of years though) will hopefully be a rescue staffie as all the ones I know are lovely dogs.

minsmum · 27/09/2014 01:04

I currently have a collie saluki cross but would love a proper saluki,an Irish wolfhound,a Gordon retriever or a dachshunds.

minsmum · 27/09/2014 01:07

But then again I would also like a whippet,an ibizan hound,a podenco, any sighthound really

Ludways · 27/09/2014 01:11

I've only ever had Scotties, I don't have one at the moment so I'm going to say a Scottie again.

I'm a bit of a Scottie nut, tbh

ToadToast · 27/09/2014 01:14

I have a pair of wolfhounds and I would like a whippet sized dog so I could use ordinary sized poo bags:)

They are incredible dogs but the cost to picket and heart is alarming.

ToadToast · 27/09/2014 01:17

No beard as well, can't tell you what horrors can end up in the beard. Hmmm tripe n hair twists anyone?

AimlesslyPurposeful · 27/09/2014 01:27

We have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a Cavalier, a Papillon and two Dogue De Bordeaux.

I rather fancy an Afghan Hound - there's an ad on TV with an AH having his photo taken and they're pointing a hairdryer at him for a windswept look. He's just beautiful. All that lovely silky fur to brush - like a doggy Rapunzel.

What breed that you DON'T have, would you like to have?
Mmmnotsure · 27/09/2014 01:31

One of our dogs is a Newfoundland, which seems to be on a lot of posts here. Wonderful, wonderful breed, and not all of them slobber!

The family wishes here would be a Leonberger (ds), and a deerhound or Irish wolfhound (dh). We do seem to go in for very large dogs. All I know is that they are wonderful, but that you risk your heart getting broken more quickly Sad.

MummyBeerest · 27/09/2014 01:32

We have a Chihuahua. She's my spirit animal and I love her. I once tried posting a picture of her but it always failed Sad

I actually adore little dogs. I want a Pomeranian, a white one, and name it Bowie.

nooka · 27/09/2014 01:33

I have a 'real' mongrel, when we picked him up from the rescue as a pup we were told they had no idea what he might grow up like, views as to did dad ranged from Terrier to Rottweiler. His mother was apparently an American Water Spaniel, but he looks more like a small lab and they look a bit like chocolate coloured poodles so I don't think she can have been in any way pure bred. Sometimes I think about having his DNA tested just to know what mix is in him.

Anyway if we had another dog I'd like a collie/whipped cross or something in that sort of vicinity. Mostly black, skinny and bendy, with lots of speed. We used to look after a friends dog at university who was the runt of a farming collie litter and he was gorgeous, really dappy too Grin Whenever I see dogs like him on rescue sites I am so tempted!

CheerfulYank · 27/09/2014 01:36

I have a mostly Golden mutt and he's lovely. :)

I'd like to have a King Charles, a yellow lab...and many others!

elmwoo · 27/09/2014 01:36

I would like a papillion dog, i saw it on my ds pack off dog top trumps and they look fantastic little dogs

GemmaTeller · 27/09/2014 08:17

Aimlessly I'm Envy of your family of dogs Grin

We used to have a GSD - I loved her cleverness, her beautiful thick coat, her willingness to go for long, muddy walks and swims and her protectiveness of me when we were out in the fields/farms/woods etc.

I love my boxers to bits but sadly we have agreed due to our age and various ailments these will be our last dogs Sad

I know someone who has a Great Dane and she says while she loves her dog to bits she is fed up of the same comments every time they take him out....'how much does that cost to feed haha' etc., etc.,

KoalaDownUnder · 27/09/2014 08:22

After dog-sitting a whippet for a few weeks, I'd kill for one. They are fantastic!

daisy5569 · 27/09/2014 09:43

I have a basenji and would def get another one, also love JRT's and want another one of those too.... But also like the look of Minature Pins and Manchester Terriers, think I tend to like little dogs with smooth coats!

wildfig · 27/09/2014 10:27

I have two basset hounds, and it's hard to imagine having any other dog but..

I'd quite like a Scottish terrier, or a standard wire dachsie. All the personality but a bit more portable.

Or a pair of rescue greyhounds. Beautiful, elegant dogs.

CatThiefKeith · 27/09/2014 10:35

I have a labrador, but would also love:

A boxer (We had one as a child - daft as a brush)
A Rottie (Every one I have ever met has been a lovely, gentle giant

I can also see the appeal of a hairless dog btw - my carpets were cream once!

Chocrock · 27/09/2014 10:37

We have a French Bulldog who is lovely and I wouldn't change for the world. We live in central London.

If I lived in the country I would have a greyhound and a border collie.....and a Frenchie!
