Introducing a young cat/kitten to an older Westie...can it be done??

I am really wanting to get a rescue cat/kitten soon and when asked if I have other pets I've said "yes, I've a Westie who is fine with cats," but recently wondering if I need to think this through a bit more.

The reason I say she's "fine with cats" is because she lived with two older moggies for about two years when she was my MIL's dog (we inherited her when MIL died). She basically left them alone aside from a feeble chase in the garden every now
and then.

However, they were both streetwise, older cats which might not be the same for our future rescue kitty.

Just wondering if this is a bad idea all around, if it can be done, and what other's experiences of introducing a new cat into a westie (or terrier) household? She's not really been around baby animals before...thanks!

By baby animals I mean if rescue cat is young, say under a year.
