I've got lovely collie bitch, not your mad collie temp, lovely, calm, very trainable, acts more like an lab then anything else. We've been asked by many family/friends to see if we are going to breed from her, this is something we are now considering. We are thinking of putting her too a small/med poodle, from research they seem to be a good cross. Anyone have any experience? Ta

Why would you want to?

MitchellMummy · 04/09/2014 17:21

I don't have any experience ... I would NEVER breed any of my dogs, and particularly not to another breed. I'm pleased that there are breeders out there who are willing to go through health testing etc. etc., but having seen (on Facebook and other forums) about a number of bitches dying in whelp I would not consider this myself.

monkeyfacegrace · 04/09/2014 17:22

Don't be a twat.

Hth.

Rainicorn · 04/09/2014 17:22

The only name for a dog with two different breeds is a mixed breed dog. I loathe these fancy mixed breed names.

If you're seriously thinking of breeding, please do it responsibly, don't sell the puppies to anyone who comes along. Look into other costs, get bills, health checks, worming and fleaing, food, pet insurance etc.

I would only do it if I had a number of homes before breeding, and in this case I seriously do, all dog owners already. I have breed dogs before but JRT and not a cross. Been advised by my trainer not to breed to a collie due to her very calm temp. So just looking around, and a poodle is similar in size and body size to her. If anyone could recommend any other breed that would be suitable then please make an suggestion.

But why breed her at all?

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 04/09/2014 17:33

please don't. we have a labradoodle from a rescue. there's so many of these poor beautiful doggies bring used as puppy machines and tossed aside when they're no use anymore :(

monkeyfacegrace · 04/09/2014 17:34

The owners you have lined up?

Please point them in the direction of Many Tears, ELGR, Collie rescue. I could go on.

They obviously don't care about what breed they have as you doneed even know yourself yet.

Personally I think you are just here for a laugh. Can't you get your kicks elsewhere?

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 04/09/2014 17:37

just adding to what monkey said, if it's a doodle they're wanting, please direct them to the Doodle Trust :)

Rainicorn · 04/09/2014 17:38

I think it's cruel to breed a family pet. Why put your dog through that just to line your pockets?

tabulahrasa · 04/09/2014 17:40

You'd be struggling to line your pockets breeding collie crosses, do you know how many health tests collies need? Confused

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/09/2014 17:40

I will I've you the advice I give ever potential pet dog breeder.
"Be aware you could lose the bitch and the pups and still have vets bill of over £1000 it is rare, but it does happen".

EveDallasRetd · 04/09/2014 17:43

Every dog you breed sentences another dog in Rescue to their death. Why are your dogs puppies more important? Why do your puppies deserve to live over them?

Also, if you actually like (dare I say love?) your dog, why would you risk her life just to make a quick buck pimping out her womb?

Don't do it.

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 17:43

No not here for a laugh, wasn't after if I should or not. Every animal I have ever breed or sold (horses) I know exactly where they are, how they are doing etc. And would also have any of them back in a heartbeat if problems arose. (And in fact I've had 2 horses back at my own cost when there owners have had babies) (haven't bred any horses just ones that I have brought - total of 4 in my life my life time) I do care about the breed, but more about a healthy animal that has a good temp. That's why it's been suggested not to breed back to a collie. Most of the people asking for a pup are in fact (all but one person) who have had one of the JRT, some have now passed on - old age, others wanting to add their families. So please people with experiences of the cross, I don't want this to turn into a bun fight.

Fav · 04/09/2014 17:43

Please don't breed from her.
I'm sure she's a lovely dog, but that's not a good enough reason to bring possibly 10 puppies into the world.

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 17:44

Oh and it wouldn't be to line pockets, I won't even charge family for the pups, it is my cost.

OP posts:
EveDallasRetd · 04/09/2014 17:47

So you just don't like your current dog very much then?

DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 17:49

But why breed her at all? Confused

If your friends want to add to their family then direct them to a rescue centre. Loads of lovely temperament mixed breeds waiting for homes.

Why breed?

DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 17:51

Do you just not have much on in work at the minute? Try a hobby. I hear lots of rescues need volunteers.

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 17:53

There is a very good reason why as a family we don't want rescue dogs, something which I don't want to end go into as it's very upsetting, but put it this way, a DT dog attacked one of cousins, resulted in very bad injuries and 2 years down the down he died of infection when having reconstruction surgery. So for us as a family it's all about temp

OP posts:
tabulahrasa · 04/09/2014 17:59

So you're going to pay about £1000 for the health tests and to use a health tested stud...the cost of raising a litter, worming, their eye tests (which could easily be another thousand) and put your own dogs health at risk - so that, other people have a puppy? Really?

Not to mention an emergency section comes in at about £2000 or more.

monkeyfacegrace · 04/09/2014 18:00

Get a rescue puppy at 8 weeks then of you are scared of rescue dogs Confused
