I've got lovely collie bitch, not your mad collie temp, lovely, calm, very trainable, acts more like an lab then anything else. We've been asked by many family/friends to see if we are going to breed from her, this is something we are now considering. We are thinking of putting her too a small/med poodle, from research they seem to be a good cross. Anyone have any experience? Ta

I love my dog. He is the best tempered dog i have ever met, wen he goes i will be hard pushed to find a dog as perfect. But, I would rather be without a dog at all than breed a a new litter just for temperament. If i couldnt find the temperament i wanted in a dog that already exists i would do without. Its not essential to have a dog you know. In your shoes i would be looking for and meeting rescue dogs and spending a great deal of time getting to know them. Breeding just wouldnt be an option. Not for someone who values their own dog and cares about their wellbeing.

DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 18:01

I am also very sorry for your family's loss OP.

EveDallasRetd · 04/09/2014 18:02

And 'backyard breeder' dogs (as yours will be) have no better temperament than puppies in rescues. I have a collie cross from a rescue, her temperament is amazing. My friend has a 'bred' Labrador who is food aggressive, hates children and hates other dogs.

Judge the dog, not where it comes from.

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 18:03

My money has nothing to do with this. I can provide and pay the thousands should it come to it, it's not for profit. After what my family has been though it's not about that.

DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 18:04

I'd also remind you that you dont even know the dog you would be breeding her with so have no guarantee of temperament at all. Just what his owners tell you.

Eastpoint · 04/09/2014 18:04

Why would you want a dog that demanding? Poodles & collies are both very intelligent highly trainable working dogs. A poodle collie cross would be incredibly hard work, if you had a litter of 12 I imagine they could plot together to shut you in a room & drive off without you.

Don't do it.

tabulahrasa · 04/09/2014 18:07

I'm not asking whether you can afford it...I'm questioning whether you're really willing to spend at least two thousand pounds and risk your own dog's health to give 8 other people a puppy.

I wouldn't, I don't even know 8 people I'd give a puppy to, nevermind spend that much of my money on them.

Am asking for experience of the cross, to widen my knowledge. If it does happen it will be very well researched and thought out - hence asking. As for the stud dog, if the owners aren't willing us to visit a few times and in different situations, answer the right questions then it isn't for us. We may not even find that so then no puppies.

OP posts:
ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 18:14

Because yes there is a risk but that can be reduced, not putting to a dog too big, etc. We are a close family, and losing a child in our families situation is very shocking and upsetting.

DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 18:15

So you posted on a parenting forum to get information about a collie/poodle cross? Confused

If that's the level of research you are doing then i strongly recommend you abandon this idea completely for the wellbeing of your dog and any prospective pups.

Aked · 04/09/2014 18:15

I'm very sorry about your cousin. But even that rescue dog was a puppy once. A blank page, that someone chose to mistreat, and thus turn into an aggressive dog.

That could be one of your puppies in a few years time.

Sorry OP, there are thousands upon thousands of dogs in rescue at the moment. You will only be adding to the problem, just because your dog has a nice temperament? My dog has a beautiful temperament. She is also a rescue, a puppy thrown in a pound because there are too many people breeding dogs unnecessarily.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 04/09/2014 18:17

I'm fairly sure losing a child in any situation is shocking and upsetting Hmm

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 18:23

I posted on here as well as other dog sites that I am on, as MN has a dog section I thought I'd post here as well. I don't see what is wrong with that?
I give up. Will keep my dog questions to other forums. I know about risks etc, im only asking about a specific breed.
Bye

TightyMcTight · 04/09/2014 18:25

It's not a breed. They will be mongrels.

tabulahrasa · 04/09/2014 18:25

It's not a specific breed, it's a cross and like any cross the puppies could come out completely randomly, even within the same litter.

Any of the dog forums I go on will tell you the same thing, breeding a pet dog is completely unnecessary.

WeAreGroot · 04/09/2014 18:26

If your relatives/friends want a dog just like yours then they should be looking for an adult rescue which fits the bill. Even pedigree puppies don't end up being little clones of their parents, never mind those produced by crossing two very different breeds.

Eatingtodeath · 04/09/2014 18:27

My experience is never to mention dog breeding here. It will not end well.

PitchSlapped · 04/09/2014 18:27

You're not asking about a breed you're asking about BYB you want to do. If you had actually ever read the doghouse you would know what reception irresponsible breeders get

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 04/09/2014 18:27

I missed the word cross out. In fact they have been giving me the information. I was asking, maybe it's because I've more history on those forums then this.

OP posts:
DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 18:28

Its not a specific breed. It is two breeds being crossed to form a mixed breed.

Really. Reconsider what you are doing. Although i suspect you wont. All the BYBs ive had contact with seem to be able to justify what they do to themselves even though its plainly obvious the only reason is 'because i have a dog and i want puppies from it' Hmm

DiaDuit · 04/09/2014 18:28

Xpost with others.

WeAreGroot · 04/09/2014 18:29

OP, is your bitch fully health tested? There's a list here of all the tests that should be done prior to even considering using her for breeding.

mrslaughan · 04/09/2014 18:30

you missed the point - it is not a breed - but a designer mongrel, that could be poodle in temperament, or collie in temperament, or the best features of both,.....or the worst features of both....you just don't know.

but judging by your tone you are only interested in us all saying...go on do it, she's a lovely dog. we all have lovely dogs, that isn't a reason to breed from them.

VetNurse · 04/09/2014 18:32

Another person wanting to jump on the poodle cross bandwagon. Oh joy.
