My 5yo staffy has had issues in the past with urinating and fouling on the kitchen floor where he was kept at night (closed in) nothing was working until we introduced the crate. Problem solved for a very long time. Recently we have been smelling a strong and strange smell when we first enter the kitchen it's small so we just presumed the dog had a strange odur.
Today I went to wash his bedding and as I got close the smell took my breath away it smelt like bleach, the bedding was damp too.

I can't believe he is urinating in his cage I thought this was rare because they see it as their own den.
I don't know where to go next, he's old enough to know better he gets plenty of exercise. I despair.

Get him checked out for a UTI.

Will do, do you think he should be neutered too?

How long is he in the crate for?

I think he should be neutered too. And it's a very good idea to have him checked out for a UTI.

He's in the crate from 9 or 10pm until 5am when he is taken on a 10min walk by my partner before he starts work then is put back in until I let him out around 7.30am when I wake up. Weekends he is out later and let out the crate by 8am for a walk. Do you think that's an ok routine?

Has he ever been continent over night on a regular basis. ? A crate will not solve a longstanding house training problem or longstanding medical issue . I assume he is not crated at all during the day ?

Superchop · 03/09/2014 20:44

Yeah he is out of the crate during the day and has no accidents at all. As for going all night with out accidents before the crate he messed 95% of the time. He has had the crate for 2years and up until the last month he had no issues with messing in or out of the crate. We thought it was the cure.

Are there other symptoms of a uti?

Smelly offensive wee.

Superchop · 03/09/2014 20:57

Well it definitely was that. Never smell it when we are out though.

Should I do something specific to the bedding or crate that may discourage him wetting again?

Get him checked by a avet and wash the stuff in bio liquid.
