New puppy - what do I need?

We are currently registered with some rescue centres waiting for a puppy to become available I want to get ahead a bit and get some of the stuff we will need sooner rather than later, so what sort of things do I need? I've had dogs before but never a puppy.
I'm thinking bed (do I buy a puppy sized bed and then a bigger one later, or a big one and stuff loads of blankets in to make it cosy?), bowls, collar?halti?harness? and lead (we don't know what sort of dog/ how big it will be yet so maybe wait until we know?), toys erm, what else?!?!
Crate training was recommended by one of the rescues so I think a crate too.
We've found a vet and training classes.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Oh so excited for you, our puppy is coming in a few weeks so I've pinched your list.

I've noticed on youtube videos puppies always seem to have teddies to cuddle up to, and someone mentioned a ticking clock under the blankets for comfort, or is that going too far?!Grin

Lots of cardboard tubes, boxes etc that you can use as diversion when it tries to hang onto your trouser legs or skirt hem (nb don't wear skirts or dresses actually, protect your legs instead) and also be aware of the mad hour around 7pm when you want to sit down and puppy wants to mad zooms around the room.
Enjoy!

Cuddly toys! They were dpup's favourite thing when he was very little - he'd carry them around (and then rip them to shreds!)

Damn, I've just charity shopped a load of soft toys! I'll raid the recycling before she comes for the cardboard boxes from my many amazon orders Blush
I remember my mum putting a little clock in the puppy's bed when I was little, and a hot water bottle but she was 7 weeks when we got her. Our pup is a bit older, although we don't know quite how old, and has been in kennels for the past week. Poor baby :(

Sorry OP, can I hang about on here for ideas too? Our puppy won't be with us until November ( and isn't even born yet!) but I'm already in over-excited overdrive mode Grin.

We just picked our 7 week old puppy up lastnight! I am so excited to see him this morning that i can't sleep! He is still asleep though so i don't want to go and wake him up. Grin

Ooh - jealous of those who have already got their puppies! What breed? We are getting a German shorthaired pointer.
