Good light dog food recommendations please

I have an overweight lab. She is overweight partly because DH gives her too many treats. She is 8 years old and we need to do something fast. She gets good walks.

So the plan is to try light food, cut all treats and do lots more fetch on top of good walks.

Meant to add she is currently on Markus muehler (sp?)

Not sure if it's already one you've considered by, Complete Senior by Wagg is a pretty good choice. It's meant specifically for older dogs whom you're trying to help control weight gain, and the general consensus is that it's quite affordable.

Hope you dog manages to work off the treats! Might be worth seeing if you could replace his treats with a piece of fruit she enjoys (though those can sometimes be few and far between...)

Some dogs really enjoy a raw carrot too. We bulk up our dog's food a bit by giving her some vegetables with her meal sometimes - cooked cabbage, courgettes, carrots or tinned chopped tomatoes all go down well.

Have you looked into raw food. You could give bones which would make her work for her food.

I'll check with DH but I think we use Arden grange. Seems ok. We also have labs.

It's hard when they are used to treats. At one point we had one trained not to go out unless she got a treat and the other wouldn't come in unless she got a treat! Madness.

You could measure out the food for the day and make sure all treats come from that so there is no extras.

Ours love a carrot. They get one every evening. Great for their teeth too apparently.

Look into switching to raw, far more appropriate and will lose weight easily as long as you follow quantities advice; and all treats should come from days food 'allowance'

I use Arden Grange Light. It is harder to keep weight off my golden but my 8 year old GSD has never looked better.
