Explaining bleeding to a 6 yr old

My bitch is in season. My 6 yr old is worried about her bleeding and got quite upset. I explained she does bleed sometimes and it will only last 2weeks. He is inquisitive and wants to know what the heck is going on, particularly as we don't make a big deal of it. How would you explain it to a child? My concern is it leading onto a discussion about women having periods and a can of worms he's not yet ready to open.

I did tell my ds at younger than yours about periods full stop. It came up after he'd walked in on me. I kept it simple and childlike but truth based - ladies bodies prepare just in case they need to grow a baby, and a kind of cushion made of something that looks like blood is inside ladies for this. It is what babies need to grow so if the lady doesn't have a baby, the cushiony bit isn't needed.

I think that it age appropriate and I'd sooner give that and deal with it if it goes anywhere than have him.frightened for his dog.
