Lost my lab today

He's an outdoor dog, heard him crying shortly before 6am and went out to find him lying down.. Knew right away it wasn't good. He had totally lost the use of his hindquarters. Poor boy was due to turn 10 next month.

I lifted him into the garage and wrapped him in a towel and sat with him until 9am having a cry, a chat and telling him wonderful he was. He hated the kitchen and would never come inside because he couldn't stand skidding around on the tiled floor. Makes me smile thinking of that actually!

Totally out of the blue, such a shock. He was hopping about and dancing on his hind legs as usual for his supper last night at 10.30pm.

I've had a bad run of luck with pets lately - my first and much wanted bichon pup died at 14 weeks old due to a heart problem and my little fluffy cat was hit by a car last year. Hopefully that's my run of bad luck over for a while and I can continue to enjoy my two little fluffy bichons who astounded me this morning by knowing there was something wrong - they were little superstars and have been clinging to me since I got home.

To everyone out there suffering the loss of a dear friend, have a hug on me.

So sorry - such a dreadful shock. Glad for you and him that you heard him cry and were able to hold him and comfort in his final moments.

I hope that in time the tears subside and you are able to smile at more and more of those happy memories of him (like the skiddy kitchen floor) . We lost our Bernese in February and although we still feel it, we often reminisce about her and feel blessed to have known her. You'll get there in time Flowers

Poor boy. Rip. I'm dreading when it's time for ours to go. They really are part of the family aren't they.

Bumping the thread for you since I am not sure that many have seen it

Bowlersarm · 11/08/2014 21:00

I have labs, and I've put off opening this thread. So sad. Sad

Sorry OP. Thanks He had a lovely long life though, and the end was quick.

Hugs.

So sorry to hear about your lovely lab - we had 2 growing up and they were just fabulous dogs so I understand how awful this must be for you

BareFacedKitty · 12/08/2014 23:50

Thank you all. I think it's only starting to sink in now. I am working away all week and I'm just grateful that it happened when I was at home and I could be there for him. It's something I suppose we all know when we take on our beloved dogs but it's so hard. Going home on Friday and not having him there wagging his tail will be difficult!

So sorry to hear this OP. I lost my lab a few weeks' ago, totally unexpectedly, so I know how difficult it is. I bumped into a neighbour today, whom I hadn't seen since it happened and she was commiserating. To my embarrassment I started crying and then immediately apologised for making a scene (!) She is a professional counsellor (I don't think I'd known that) and wasn't at all uncomfortable by my blubbing in the middle of the street. Her advice was to cry if you feel like crying; it's normal in the grieving process and a dog is a much loved family member, so of course we'll miss them hugely. I felt liberated at being 'given permission' to cry (as I'm doing it so much at the moment), so I'm passing this on in the hope that it may help you too. Thinking of you and your gorgeous boy, and sending you a hug too.
