Urgent- dog just eaten some chocolate cake.

Is this an emergency or not? Roughly one medium sized slice cake with chocolate icing on. She is 8 months old, medium breed, not sure of her weight, about 12K maybe? I am alone, carless as dH is over an hour away and probably unreachable by 'phone as he is in a swimming pool park thing with dcs. Vet is a car-ride away. AArrgh. i thought cake was out of her reach, I only popped out of the room for a few minutes, but she is taller than I thought.

I can't even get in a taxi as my wallet is in the car.

I'd just ring the OOH vet ,I doubt they will want to see her - how much actual chocolate is there in chocolate cake - not a vast amount .

It is a Marks and Sparks cake, not a home made one, so I don't know how much there is. It looks dark in colour but they probably won't be putting 80% cocoa solids in it would they? There isn't a percentage of cocoa listed, its just an ingredient.

My daft mother has JRT x borders , they are 13 ,they have often had chocolate cake ,chocolate biscuits etc - my mother doesn't consider it proper chocolate - they have both survived so far without any apparent ill effects .

She is a terrier, but a lot bigger than a JRT, she's an Irish terrier. Here is the thieving beast.

She is gorgeous ,are all her other issues resolved ? IIRC didn't she have a heart problem and a limp ?

Yes! So lovely of you to remember. Heart problem still there, she is due another scan to see how it is progressing. Limp thankfully all resolved, she didn't need surgery, in the end it a scan showed it was just badly inflamed at the knee, and three weeks rest with anti-inflammatories resolved it. She seems fit as a flea, you wouldn't know there was a heart issue to see her running on the beach. I have spoken to the vet receptionist, she is calling the experts and then calling me back.

I think it's a lot of very dark chocolate that is the issue.

Where does cocoa powder appear on the ingredients list? If it is quite far down and only one slice was consumed I think it will be fine but OOH vet would reassure?

There's not that much chocolate in a slice of cake, regardless of how strong a chocolate it was. If you google you can actually find a calculator that tells you how much chocolate a dog can safely eat. Would find if for you but a bit frantic here!

Vet has just called back, they spoke to the poisons people and apparently it should be fine. She said the toxicology is relatively low in chocolate cake, and as she didn't have a huge amount she said to feed her now to dilute it, and try and get her to drink a lot (she has dry food so she probably will drink now I've fed her). Phew. I had tried a friend to see if she could drive me in but no-one home, I was about to raid dds piggy bank for a taxi!
