Can anyone recommend excellent quality soft dog treats for taking with us to dog training class. Also anyone discovered anything like rodeo and jumbones that aren't full of rubbish I like to leave her with something that takes a bit of time to get through if she is getting left for an hour or two but if she has these I see a big difference in her poos.

Stanley would turn somersaults for pieces of hotdog, sausage, ham or cheese. I find those are best for high value treats.
He also loves some little chunky things from Home Bargains but they tend to make him very thirsty so he doesn't get them often, just one or two as a change from the above goodies.
Also Gravy Bones.
He's also partial to a piece of rawhide to keep him busy when I'm out during the day.

I use bits of meat. I'm going to try making liver cake for next time though on suggestion of someone in our class.

For training, if you can stand the smell, make some liver cake www.dogslifegrooming.com/dogs-lifes-liver-cake-recipe/. It stinks when cooking, but one batch lasts for ages because it can be cut into slices, frozen and defrosted when necessary. I made my last batch a year ago and still have some in the freezer! The dogs will do anything for it though - wonderful stuff.

When it comes to leaving treats, try a kong. These can be stuffed with all kinds of treats and keep most dogs entertained (though ours are too stupid to figure them out..)

Little cut up pieces of cheddar or hot dogs or cheap garlic sausage work well with my dog for training or getting her to do what I want. A lot of people at my local dog training use a tube of primula and just squeeze out a little bit at a time for the dog to take. Only use pieces the size of your thumb nail and if my dog has a few treats I give her slightly less at meal time.

I agree kongs are great for keeping them busy at home for a while.

ddog gets The Innocent Hound sausages or cheese for training, sometimes a tube of primula which he loves. Sometimes just use some of his kibble.

For chewing he gets natural chews from Millies Wolfheart, his favourite is Whistle Blowers.

And he goes bonkers for a dried cows ear. You can get a huge bag of 100 from ZooPlus for a good price.

Thank you everyone will give this a try. Wings are the whistle blowers ok to leave them to chew on their own?

For training, I use Lidl chorizo - £2 or so for a huge sausage, and it is so stinky that a small chunk is a big treat (apparently) so it lasts for ages

Dehydrated liver, my dog goes nuts for it (as do the rest of the dogs at training, much to their owners annoyance as they want to pay more attention to me than them!) Just get some liver, rinse in a sieve to get rid of the blood, pat dry, slice up and I put it in my dehydrator, or you can put it in the over on a very low temperature.

One thing I would say though, is don't leave your dog with a raw hide when you go out, it goes soft and chewy but not easy to eat and can be a real choking hazard

All natural chews will say don't leave alone due to chocking risk.

I've been buying treats and realise now how expensive it can be.

He goes absolutely nuts for the cat's dry food (she goes nuts for his!), so I have decanted the dry cat food into a tub to use as training treats.

Very inexpensive and he loves them!
