Dog was castrated yesterday, very whiny today. :(

Is this normal? Vet said he should be largely back to his normal self today and he is much, much better than when I got him home yesterday and greeted us normally this morning etc. He just seems a bit whiny which isn't like him, is this usual?

Took another day for our dog to get back to usual.

But i found removing his cone stopped him whining, it meant I had to be superglued to his side to keep him away from the stitches.

The cone lasted about an hour before he'd managed to get out of it. Touch wood he doesnt seem to be licking the wound, I'm just hoping he'll be back to normal tomorrow. I need to go out for an hour for docs appt do you think its ok to leave him? Should I crate him while I'm out, he's normally only crated at night.

The effects of the anaesthetic wearing off makes my dog very whiney for a day or so, (or possibly it's the effects of the Metacam in her case, as she had both)
If everything else is getting back to normal, I'd just keep an eye on him for now

My dog was licking his wound surreptitiously and managed to get it infected. I'd get that cone on again if you can

Oh I better get another one from vet then he managed to get hold of the edge of his and chewed it to bits.

Has he got any painkillers for today? All our routine surgeries go home with 3 days of pain relief to last until the first check up. Does the wound look ok or is there bruising/swelling/discharge?
if he's not right err on the side of caution and get him rechecked. Any decent vet practice would rather check a patient and decide it's all fine than not see them and there be a problem, and you shouldn't be charged for post op checks. If he's just a bit sore they can sort some pain relief for him.
Don't leave him without the cone on, you will come back to a wound that's a mess!

Our dog was v sleepy the day we took him home and pretty much slept all night, however the next morning he sobbed for hours (made me feel terrible), then at about 2pm he took himself off to his crate, slept for 2 hours then woke up and was pretty much back to normal

Depending on the breed of dog and length of nose I find the inflatable collars much better than the cones. Comfier and easier for them to eat and drink.
Useless for a Scottie though, long, pointy nose, though worked brilliantly with the westie.

Had our dog done last week. I was amazed how long it took for anaesthetic to wear off. He was floppy, head down low and bit whiny the whole day after the op. Not interested in food but was drinking ok and ate enough plain chicken with pain relief meds that I wasn't worried.

Day 1&2 really bad
Day 3 still bit low, slow sorry for self
Day 4 getting better and all more positive from them on

Our vet didn't suggest a cone and it wasn't needed. We caught him at stitches a few times but stopped him sharply and all has been well. Still on reduced lead walks only so I'm really missing our lovely long walks.
