Tips please for new puppy

Hi we collect our border collie pup 12 aug. She will be 8 weeks old then. We have 2 cats aged 7 and my dd is 9. Have grown up with dogs n cats but looking for some advice on everything really!!

Have you got a crate? We found this really useful for my Border Collie pup to enforce some naps as he would jump up the moment anyone stirred and tiredness made him more nippy. He was fed in it from the word go, had at least three naps in it and slept in it at night until he was 10 months old. He's nearly a year old now and a delight.

We found squealing whenever he nipped even if it didn't hurt worked for him although I know it doesn't for everyone, but it is something you have to get on top of quickly as its a border collie trait.

Do you know anyone who has a really well socialised adult dog who you can introduce her to?

Whereabouts are you based? I'm in Surrey/hants and can reccomend very good training classes if your're anywhere near.

I have a crate and have got stair gatw to let cats have peace upstairs. I have dog walker for my one long day at work. I live in glasgow.

One thing I wish I'd done earlier with mine is get them used to joggers and bikes, he's just started to chase them(very Border collieish) and have now to put a lot of work in to change it. Expose them to as many sounds/smells and shapes as soon as possible.

Until recently we didn't leave him alone in the house for more than a couple of hours and he was crated for that. He's now allowed in hall and kitchen at night and when we're out and is fine. He's never been allowed upstairs.
Border Collies do need a lot of mental exercise. We did lots of hiding toys in boxes/under blankets etc and I now go to training classes twice a week when work allows plus social walks run by my trainer where I can get help and support and he can play with the love of his life in the shape of a large white GSD who bosses him around constantly.
