How do you stop a dog barking at passers by?

Our rescue mutt is now a year old and doing really well. She rarely barks in the house but in the summer we like her to have free access to the garden, and she tends to bark at everyone and everything passing by. We're very rural so it's not too bad, but we are a bit worried the neighbours will get fed up. Any ideas of how we can reduce this?

Lovely for dog to be able to go in garden whenever he wants but not always a good idea if you want to stay friends with neighbours.
My rescue would bark at everything - birds flying overhead, butterflies, the sound of cars going past - if he was in the garden on his own. I'm sure he thinks it's his job to let us know what's going on when we're not there . So he's always supervised and hardly ever barks, if he does he stops as soon as we say "quiet".

We call her in when she barks, so maybe she'll get the idea that if she wants to stay out she needs to zip it - not sure she's that bright though! Yes, it's a shame as she loves lying in the sun (when we have some) - only really a problem in summer.

Kikopup on youtube does some really good videos that apparently will train them out of this. Haven't tried it personally but have seen recommendations on here.

Murphy is like this, but he 'huffs' if that makes sense. It's not a bark it's a throaty voice that comes out like a huff.

Everywhere we go if he sees someone he huffs at them. I think if it was translated it would say 'Oi! I'm here, why haven't you noticed me and rubbed my belly!?' It is annoying on a walk mostly because people think he's being a bit snappy. I'm on top of it now with 'Quiet!' and a treat when he stops. He's getting the hang of it.

Weirdly the only place he doesn't bark/huff is his own garden.

Are you me OP? I could have written that exact post! I haven't tried training her out of it, but I do bring her indoors if she is going over the top, or doing it too often for the neighbours my liking. she just barks at people and other dogs, not cars or bikes. And usually I hear horses coming from a way up the lane so will always go and grab her first.

I should probably start trying to change things!

It would help if the people going by stopped stopping to have a chat with her over the fence too!!
