How long before cat and dog are friends?

If you had a cat first and then got a puppy, how long did it take for them to become friends?

Puppy is now 7 months and cat tolerates him but is not yet friendly enough to stay in same room for a long time as him

My dog has just turned 2 and the cat is 4. They are great mates now, the cat often approaches the dog when he's laying on the floor and rubs his head on him and rolls over on top of him. The dog washes the cats ears. They have play fight games to, which are initiated by the cat. Also when the dog gives up the cat keeps running back and forth past the dog to wind him up.

Anyway I guess it took a year before they started to sit near each other and they have got better as time progressed.

It probably mainly depends on the temprements of wash the cat and the dog, they may never get to a point of wanting to be too close to each other.

I think it depends on the individual animals. My oldest cat wont tolerate my dog at all and never did but sleeps with my neighbours chihuahua and has play fights/chasing games with her!

My cat is 17 and my dog is 11. Had both from being a puppy/kitten. They have never been friends. They tolerate each other or ignore each other. So at least they don't fight, but equally they do not get on.

On the other side, my brothers dog and his two cats (cats were kittens when dog was around 2) are all amazing together and the very best of friends.

All down to individuals I think.

My cat is 5 and my 1st dog is 3 they get on not a problem have done from about 3 months after we got dog. But my little dog who's 1 now is a different story they hate each other and can't see that changing. They fight and hiss and bark at each other.

LEMmingaround · 22/06/2014 12:11

Never! Even if the cat makes a pretence of being friends with the dog, make no mistake, the cat is biding its time and the dog has submitted its will

Our cat was quite old when we got the dog three years ago.

They tolerate each other.

Just remembered I used to feed the cat and the dog treats together to get them used to being near each other. The cat would be on a table or more often than not, the top of the dogs create, and feed them bits if ham or cheese. If you try this though make sure your dog I not likely to jump up near the cat to try to get the cats treat as that's likely to make the cat more worried by the dog. Maybe keep the dog on a lead with your foot on it sothe dog can chase the cat if the cat decides they'd rather be elsewhere.

Sorry about the dodge spellings and missing spaces, I think you can work it out.

One of my cats will sit and be licked by our Husky. The other will not tolerate him at all. We had the cats first. Took about a week for the two to settle, I doubt the second cat ever will.

First Cat and Husky currently pushing me sharing the settee with me now.

Took our 9 yo cat about a year to stop bullying the foster border collie pup. The pup thought he was just a sharp hissy puppy, the cat saw him as an unwanted invader Grin. After about 12 months they were utterly inseperable. Foster pup really pined when pussy died Sad

(as did we Sad)
