Giving dogs human antibiotics?

If the dosage is the same as the dog antibiotics, can this be done? It's amoxicillin.

It's a debate. I will not let my dog be given them...

Veterinary medicines directorate forbids this while we have a specific brand licenced in dogs -Amoxycare.

Though in truth it is rarely used as it is less effective in dogs than humans as a beta lactamase inhibitor is often needed a clavunated amoxicillin is used such as Synulox or Clavudale to name two of the brands.

Clav sounds familiar. He has had synulox and noroclav.

I think it may cause injury. XP says it'll be fine. He has an infected claw and it's just not going away. It's been operated on (they were going to remove claw but they just thoroughly cleaned it) one seven day course of antibiotics and previously shot of them and then again after. We were told it was gone. I'm not sure if it's back again or never went

You shouldn't use human medicines in animals accept when prescribed under the cascade this is the law.
The clavunate inhibitors the beta lactamase in the most common animal bacteria regular amoxicillin won't do this. Particularly in claw injuries this is likely to ineffective.
Though if has already had noroclav and Synulox for this infection (they are the same drug) it is likely you need to change class of antibiotic completely. I reach for a clindamycin in this situation.

It definitely helped. I feel if he had a 10 day course after the op instead of seven, he would have been fine. From what I've read online anyway.

I'm currently putting Savlon on it and hibiscrub or saltwater baths. I can't see the vet until payday. I have £10 until the 20th. I feel so irresponsible but don't know what else to do.

Ask you vet if you could pay a small amount and the rest of payday. Some of us understand and come to arrangements like that.

Years ago my other dog was seriously ill and we knew it was coming to the time we needed to pts. I rang emergency vets at zero dark thirty after he had some kind of seizure/fit and lost his sight/mind I was 30 quid short and they wouldn't let me. When we got the money and went they did then say to pay the rest on x date but they should have said that first. We almost couldn't put him out of his misery because of that. I'm much better off now but never seem to have money after the 21st

He's with white cross vets. Big chain. Can't hurt to try...

My dog has recently had removal of a nail and biopsy ( toe) and he was on Antirobe for 14 days post OP .

He was meant to have it removed and the op cost is a lot

I was so annoyed after when they said they had just cleaned it. Another vet said they didn't understand why he was put under. Most do it without anaesthetic

I booked for him to have nail removal under sedation ,when I took him in they said they wanted to do it under GA because its safer ,so I agreed .They then rang during the OP to say that they wanted to take the entire nail and a bit of bone to biopsy for SLO ( as he has other slightly crappy nails) .He had it done 4 weeks ago today and has been having it redressed until this Tuesday ( he's a notoriously bad healer) so far its cost about £800 and he does have SLO so is on Coatex spray and Nicotinamide for life . I can start on lead walks this weekend - hurrah !

What dog is it?

Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy , it's an auto immune disease that affects nails . I'm shocked that mine has it because his nails are just a bit flaky and we had the one that split and the pictures of dogs with it online look awful . He's a 4 yr old Patterdale x that we got from Battersea as a stray at 15 weeks . Apart from the medication ( which is cheap) the only other effect for us is that I've had to swap back from raw feeding as it's not recommended with SLO.

I have googled that before and think he may have that from what was online. I remember it's like onyx...

He has a massively deformed nail that's a different texture, as wide as my little finger and it goes upwards. It's causing him to walk funny which will apparently give him chronic arthritis.

I haven't dared to call the vet yet.

He's about knee high and weighs 12/13 kg ,very energetic and very terrier IYKWIM .

I paid £53 for synulox. He will have 4 x 250mg a day (always been 2 x 500 before )

He has an infection in his nail bed. His nail bed is dead so his nail is growing but not attached to it
