Stop dog barking.

One of my dogs howl/bark when I return.
I am never away for more than three hours at a time, and during which they have access to the garden via the dog flap.
They play and sleep when I am away and there is little/no barking (I keep an eye on them via CCTV)
But when I return, they recognise the sound of my car and they run to the gate and start barking.
I tell them to be quiet but they keep barking till I get inside the house and they run inside via the dog flap.
The barking starts off the dogs across the road as it can be loud.
I am having to rush myself and run inside.
How do I get them to be quiet?

One of mine has a tendency towards this. I record my dogs when I'm out due to them both having a history of separation anxiety to some degree, so I know they're quiet until I get to the front door.

I actually do the opposite to rushing to get to him. I enter the house, but don't actually go into the kitchen - where he stays while I'm out - until he is quiet. It took a couple of days for him to make the connection between being quiet = me coming in and barking = me staying on the other side of the door, but it did work.

He occasionally has a little relapse, say when I'm delayed on the drive by the postman or something, but I tend to just delay my entry to the kitchen until he's quiet for a couple of days and he soon stops again.

Just realised your dogs are outside when you arrive home, so probably alerted to your return long before your car pulls on the drive, which makes it a tougher nut to crack.

Will have to have a ponder on that one ...

Yeah, when I am inside it's fine. Just the bit between the drive and getting inside. And when I have shopping to take in, those couple of minutes seems like ages.
