Entire male with spayed female?

FiveGetIntoTrouble · 16/05/2014 10:37

We currently have a male puppy (he's a rescue, so we don't know an exact age, but probably 7 or 8 months old), and (unexpectedly!) will be bringing a rescue bitch home within the next week or so - she is 8 years old, and has been spayed.

We will be castrating our boy eventually (he is never let off lead at the moment, etc), but were intending to wait until he was slightly older & had been through puberty, etc.

However, now we will be getting the girl, I am not sure if we need to bring that forward? Will he try to have sex with her? Obviously if she's spayed I'm not worried about puppies, but I don't want to bring her into our house to be sexually harassed by a much younger dog! I don't know if he'll bother if she's not in season, etc?

If anybody knows, that would be really useful. It isn't a money issue or anything to get him done now (and we will if it's the best thing), but obviously I have been aware of the potential health issues of being too early with the operation.

Thanks :)

They should be fine. She'll smell differently to a whole bitch and won't be welcoming to any advances from him.

trashcanjunkie · 16/05/2014 12:38

I disagree, I'd spay sooner rather than later. If you want some stuff to back up/inform have a look at what Cesar Milan has to say on the subject.

trashcanjunkie · 16/05/2014 12:39

Plus, you are delaying your opportunities to really get your teeth into recall training whilst your dog is impressionable. Sooner the better imo Grin

Freckletoes · 16/05/2014 12:55

Bring the neutered bitch home doesn't have any impact on when you should get him done. He may still try and mount her-just as you will see 2 young male dogs mount each other. It's all part of him growing up! But there won't be any "dog sex" going on!

SpicyPear · 16/05/2014 14:12

I think it's wise to wait - there is now a lot of evidence in support of that approach - (and definitely not to take any notice of anything Cesar Millan might have to say about it!)

If he's not much of a humper a spayed female is unlikely to interest him and if he does try it on, she is likely to tell him off for it. My older bitch soon made the boy understand it was not on when he was a pup. He just became obsessed with my arm instead Smile

Owllady · 16/05/2014 14:21

I have always had spayed girls and honestly if he tries anything they will get him off before he does anything! These girls are incredibly feisty you know with sex pest males :o

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/05/2014 14:26

Ceaser Milan makes great how not to train a dog TV, don't you think?

They'll be fine, wait your pup is fully grown. My Dad's entire males are fine with his spayed bitch. My own neutered dog humps her, but he humps the entire males as well Hmm

daisydotandgertie · 16/05/2014 14:29

Please disregard anything Ceasar Milan says. He has been soundly discredited.

Neutering is best left until he has matured a little more, and if the bitch is spayed she will not be giving receptive to a mating - nor will she be appealing.

Dogs don't just shag at will. They respond to an in season bitch and will try and mate at that point. If there is any attempt at any other time, then the dog needs to be taught it's not appropriate.

I have a spayed bitch (3yrs old) and have just adopted a rescue male puppy (10wks old) he is obsessed with humping my boot slippers and hasn't tried it on with her that I've seen.
It is a condition of our adoption though that he is neutered at 6months. Hopefully he'll drop the slipper obsession!

FiveGetIntoTrouble · 16/05/2014 17:23

Ah, that's really helpful, thank you. I thought he probably wouldn't be getting the 'signals', but wanted to make sure that we wouldn't be making her miserable with him!

He isn't much of a humper, really (only when he gets overexcited - excuse the inintentional double entendre - with another male puppy belonging to a family member!). I haven't seen him hump anything / anyone else, so hopefully that will remain the case.

Thank you for everyone's input - it's good to be able to get a majority vote (especially when it is what I was hoping to hear!) :)

Stop press! Oh fucketty fucketty fuck! why spicypear and daisy? I'm gutted to hear that!

Please can you link to the discrediting? I have a friend who is a massive fan. Sad

My reasoning isn't to do with the bitch, just the spraying in the house, buggering off and obsessive humping of anything and everything I've seen in unspayed doggies.

Lilcamper · 16/05/2014 19:12

Clear Millan is an unqualified Holly wood invention. this is a good website to explain why.

trashcanjunkie · 16/05/2014 19:46

Thanks Lil I'll check it out

Lilcamper · 16/05/2014 19:48

I have loads of links to footage of him actually abusing dogs if you need it.

trashcanjunkie · 16/05/2014 20:04

Yes please, can you pm me some. I have been doing some googling, and feel all wrong

I just feel so disappointed Sad

This is a nice little op ed about it that summarises the main points:
