Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

No they didn't and I didn't see your comment until I got back. It's poo and wee's but I will ask if she hasn't improved by Thursday.

TheCunnyFunt · 27/05/2014 17:26

Cinnamon I think his restraint is because he's disbelieving of me :o ie 'Are you sure I'm allowed to go and play? I'm not usually....' When I let him off he stays very close to me for about 5 minutes even though he knows he's off, I think he's just making sure that he's meant to be off :o

Yy ask for a urine test, you never know and it's better to cover all bases just to be sure!

PeanutPatty · 27/05/2014 21:59

I lurve to see them run. I could watch them run all day. It's an absolute joy. I am amazed that any creature can get so much enjoyment from running that fast only because the thought of me running full pelt for the same distance would definitely not be enjoyable Grin or easy! Grin

Cinnamon so sorry to hear about the wees and poos. Hope it gets sorted and I would pro get a urine test done anyway. Blue has been doing well with his toilet training but his limit is def 4hrs and that is with a walk round the block for plentiful comfort breaks before I leave them home alone. I think if the odd pee here and there is the worst I have to deal with then we are very lucky compared to some other lurcher owners.

Trying to convince my parents that a grey or Lurcher would suit them. Have told them to visit the local greyhound/Lurcher rescue and start walking the hounds on a volunteer basis to see what they think as IMHO a pointy would really suit them.

GobblersKnob · 27/05/2014 22:14

Really hope you get to the bottom of it (so to speak) soon cinnamon, it's such a worry when something is not right with them.

After being an absolute arse all day, new dog has just given me the most lovely cuddle and ear wash :)

PeanutPatty · 27/05/2014 23:14

Gobbler the hound smooches and doe eyes really make it all worthwhile and can make you forgive the most heinous Lurcher naughties. Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 28/05/2014 08:53

We were up at 2am and then she went until 7 so an improvement last night but she was really desperate both times.

I also forgot to post yesterday we took peanut to have his claws cut, she did two and he went for her both times. I've made an appointment for her and the vet to try without me in the room and if that isn't an improvement she's suggested sedation :( poor peanut. Dh and I have been working on him and can now touch his claws with no problems but the second he see the clippers he goes upstairs even if I'm doing Lola's. The nurse thinks he's worse than last time but dh went in so I wonder if he felt less secure than when he's with me. He went into the vets with his tail wagging and came out not very happy!

GobblersKnob · 28/05/2014 09:23

Good news about Lola, fingers crossed that she continues to improve now. Have you tried Peanut with a dremel rather than clippers? The whippet is clipper phobic and will run a mile if he sees them, but even though he is not keen on the dremel he will tolerate it and will even lie down while I do them. It did take a bit of time and hot dogs to desensitize him to the noise and vibration.

cinnamongreyhound · 29/05/2014 07:01

So relieved! Lola went 6 hours yesterday without going to the toilet and even then it was me taking her out and not her asking to go and she's been all night without, she even did her usual jump into bed with dh instead of rushing to the back door. Think I'll cancel the vet!

cinnamongreyhound · 29/05/2014 07:04

Sorry forgot to reply to you GobblersKnob, we haven't tried until recently we couldn't even touch his claws without him growling but we had considered it. The vet nurse suggested a normal file first but I don't own one so will get one and see. Thank you.

GobblersKnob · 29/05/2014 12:48

That sounds great! What a relief for you :)

I used to use a manual file on the whippet, he tolerated it will but it is a loooong job, nails built for running are made of tough stuff Grin will be great if he'll let you do it though.

If anyone has a 24 or 28 inch dog there are a few bargain coats on Amazon atm. I got this for new dog, and this for the whippet, both seem really really well made and look warm and cozy. There is also this one too.

GobblersKnob · 29/05/2014 18:26

New dog has been such a good girl today, she had a lovely zoom with another young dog on the park, and when she buggered off in the direction of another dog, came back on the second call, super proud of her. She is now curled up on the couch with the whippet and me, waiting for it to be tripe time :)

PeanutPatty · 01/06/2014 07:23

New girl sounds like she is settling in well GK! Grin

Took the dogs out for their morning wee and a squirrel ran across the road. Luckily Blue on lead and muzzled. Both dogs going crazy. Squirrel legs it up a tree. I was relieved. Then the blessed thing fell out of the tree! Blush It hit the ground with quite a thump but got up and ran away leaving me with two hyped up crazy mutts. Must apologise to the neighbours for the racket we created.

What are you all up to on this glorious day? Looks like it's going to be sunny here!

Gooner123 · 01/06/2014 07:52

What kind of squirrel falls out of a tree lol, would like to have seen it,lovely sunny morning here ( norfolk ) we did a 5 mile walk around winterton on sea yesterday but I'm not sure what plans we have for today

mistlethrush · 01/06/2014 08:27

When mistlehound gets set on rabbits (there are lots in a park we regularly walk in) she ignores squirrels completely. If she's not really in hunting mode she'll chase them too.

We had a lovely week in Northumberland - she was very good all week until the last morning when she decided to go 800m or so in the wrong direction to go and ask some horses to play with her (with me screaming at her all the way). They stood still so she came back to me and flung herself at my feet. She knew she hadn't been good at doing it - and was on the lead (she had been earlier when the horses passed) for a considerable period until the horses (which turned around shortly afterwards and then slowly made their way back down the beach). It was unfortunate as it was the best morning for photos we had had.

GobblersKnob · 01/06/2014 09:34

Must be a squirrelly morning, the whippet caught one this morning, he spotted it a second before me, stupid squirrel didn't run for ages, fortunately he throws them in the air, like he does his toys and at that point they usually manage to get away, as did this one.

Yesterday had new dog of the lead on our small enclosed local park, as there were no other dogs on. We were playing with a ball, when all of a sudden she flew across the park at a teenage girl, who was understandably terrified by the speeding lurcher bullet and screamed. When she got to her new dog was all wiggles and tail wags and trying to lick her hands. I can only think she thought it was someone she recognized from her past? I felt dreadful though, poor girl, though she was fine once I explained.

It's beautiful here, am hoping to go somewhere nice with the kids and dogs, dp has man flu Hmm so we will see.

CMOTDibbler · 01/06/2014 17:16

Cmotdog decided to run after squirrels too today - he was totally hyped up though as we were in the woods, ds was cycling, and I was running (dh was in charge of dog and ds). No squirrels were hurt though.

Gorgeous day here!

PeanutPatty · 01/06/2014 18:56

I often wonder about Blue's past as he goes very wiggly and turns into soppy nuts for people of a certain age. He adores them. Makes me think he'd prefer a home with an older couple.

This squirrel was clearly "in training"! Couldn't believe it!

We've had a lovely afternoon out with dogs and minis. However think MrPP found it stressful. He made an error and tried to plonk us in a pub garden between two black labs and another dog. Black labs get arsey. Blue kicks
off and MrPP looks at me confused. Obv Blue felt pinned in and when the labs got cross so did he as he had nowhere to escape. Then later on in our new drinking spot an offlead lab comes over and sniffs and then starts snarling and growling. Course Blue gets cross and I have to intervene. Luckily all over quickly. Lab's owner nowhere in sight. My first thought was so glad Blue in a muzzle. Then it has me thinking about how some people react to muzzles when actually those dogs are the ones guaranteed NOT to bite.

Scuttlebutter · 01/06/2014 23:37

We've had a lovely day today. Went down to Taunton where the Whippet Racing Club meets regularly, and met up with another greyhound friend of ours. We were able to do some lure coursing - it was brilliant. Took a lovely picnic and really enjoyed ourselves. Will def be going back. Smile And such a lovely bunch of people too - really friendly and very relaxed.

hairylittlegoblin · 03/06/2014 08:19

Need to stay off the EGLR site. Keep seeing lovely dogs for adoption and we really can't take anyone until the autumn. DCs were watching 101 Dalmatians yesterday and have announced they want 2 dogs and then they can have puppies Hmm

GobblersKnob · 03/06/2014 09:29

Do you follow them on Facebook hairy? Some dogs never make it to the website as they get adopted from the fb page before the website is updated, not sure how old your children are but ones that can be rehomed with young children are always snapped up quickly.

It actually took me quite a while to find new dog, though I did complicate things by having smallish children and an entire boy dog already, which made us unsuitable for lots of dogs (and some whole rescues).

hairylittlegoblin · 03/06/2014 09:49

Yes, I follow them. Currently pining over a lovely boy called Tyke!

DCs are 4 and 7 so I know that might complicate things. Also they're not particularly quiet children (I think the term is 'spirited') so a dog that needed a quiet home would not be happy with my rabble.

We're hoping for a younger dog who might enjoy a couple of small children to run him ragged occasionally but most of the time will be happy to loaf about at home

My in laws have dogs and the kids are very good with them and know how to behave sensibly but we obviously need to find the right dog who would feel happy with us. The advice on this thread has been fantastic and the dog show in Evesham really confirmed thwt lurchers are the way to go for us. Just need to stop checking the news feed

GobblersKnob · 03/06/2014 09:58

Tyke looks lovely, well they all look lovely. I'm sure when it is the right time for you then the right dog will come along :)

moosemama · 03/06/2014 11:24

hairy, a dog like Pip would suit your family. He appears highly strung in so many ways, but is never happier than when the whole family is busy at home, making a racket and playing with him etc.

He's boisterous, but seems to get that he needs to be gentle with the dcs. Then, when he's charged about from room to room getting into what everyone's doing and had a reasonable walk he really is the laziest boy. We walked a bit more than usual on Sunday (it was his first birthday Shock) and I took him for a long-ish walk yesterday and he was practically comatose all afternoon and last night. Didn't even wake up when I got the food bowls out and he's usually at the cupboard before me at the first hint dinner may be on it's way. Grin

He's still tired today. Been in bed all morning so far, hasn't even bothered with his usual charge around the garden when I get back from the school run. Think it will be a shorter walk for us today, which suits me, as I'm not feeling great myself.

It took a couple of months for us to find the right dog for us this time around. We wanted a pup, partly as dd was so young - she was 4 then too - and I was nervous about taking on an adult rescue while she was still so little and partly because I felt it may well be my last pup as I intend to take on oldies as the dcs get older. Pup had to be a rescue, that was an absolute must and we wanted a boy if possible.

I'm a firm believer in gut feelings when it comes to dog rescue - as long as all the signs back up that feeling of course. Pip had a very rough start and was a bit of an unknown quantity as a result, but I have rescued three dogs/pups via the internet over the years and on each occasion I just knew they were my dogs from the first moment I saw them. Each one has come with their own challenges, but I'm still 100% sure each rehoming was meant to be.

As Gobblers said, I'm sure when the time is right the right dog will present him/herself to you. Smile

mistlethrush · 03/06/2014 13:53

We had time requirements - because we didn't want to have a long gap after losing our previous one to bone cancer. Needing an only dog and one that could cope with a 'lively' DS (then 7) also narrowed things down. But LL homechecked us and then suggested we went and met two dogs so it was a choice between the two of them - we went for the less immediately attractive one - she looked sturdier (good in terms of playing with DS) and thought the other one wouldn't hang around for too long (she was a saluki cross with lovely feathers) but we definitely chose the right dog for us. She will walk as far as we want to, and play at any opportunity, but sleep (ideally next to you on the sofa) if there's nothing better to do.

cinnamongreyhound · 03/06/2014 14:36

That's scary moosemama! It's been a year since I first posted here too, it was a year last Saturday since I lost my Nelly and I came here to ask advice when she was poorly.

So after Lola having so many accidents, Peanut was up with dh with a very gurgly tummy Saturday night we had multiple poo's Sunday night and yesterday :( I starved him yesterday and he was fine all night. I've fed him only kibble this morning and he seems fine. He is totally fine in himself, running about and happy so I can only assume he's picked up a bug/eaten something yucky! He was crying while pooing in the garden at one point Sunday morning but none of it has had any blood in it and he seems fine today after a day without food so fingers crossed it's gone. Please no more poo in my house!!! I wish they'd make some kind of noise when they want to go out!
