Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

The heat has been unpleasant for dogs. In the garden neither me or the puppy are running around as much.

I had to go out so took him with me to Currys first of all. I got a wonderful reception from the staff who could do enough for me. One chap who is animal mad, held him for me so that I could go to customer services and complete paperwork.

Then we went to Petsathome and bought more toys and kings as I like to rotate toys to keep him busy! String of toy sausages only £2!

Then B&Q where they gave me permission to walk around holding him!

Each time we got back to the car I gave him water but he still panted as we drove and I had the windows down.

When we got home he did a very long wee!

The pet stroller is being delivered today between 13.53 and 14.53, and I will update with photos!

Shia Imho, PetPlan are the best. I wouldn't go with anyone else, have heard plenty of stories of other companies wheedling out of paying up and hiking premiums to unaffordable proportions. You need lifetime cover to be sure they will continue paying year after year if, heaven forbid, your dog develops something chronic that needs regular medication or treatment. Mine is £42 pcm for Lifetime Cover for 2 large Lurchers, one of whom is over 8, so considered a higher risk by insurance companies.

Pip has no common-sense when it comes to hot weather. Lurcherboy has just been flattening himself on the quarry tiles when it gets too much and conserving his energy lying in the draft from the open doors and windows the rest of the time. Fortunately it's very cool downstairs in my house. Weather report looks a bit cooler for the beginning of next week. I have to admit I am fed up of it now, I am missing my usual walking routine and the dogs can't get a decent run, because everyone else is walking late too. Hmm

How odd, leaving dogs in a crate in the carpark. Confused Perhaps they were travelling in the car and had to stop for something urgent (emergency toilet visit or something) so decided out of the car, but in a crate was the only option. Still, very strange.

mistlethrush · 25/07/2014 10:24

I'm going to empty out the sand from my DS's sand pit and fill it with water so mistlehound has a paddling pool.

cinnamongreyhound · 25/07/2014 14:10

I know several people who crate their dogs in the boots of the car, suppose it saves getting a guard to keep them in the boot. They were still in the boot moosemama not outside, would have been better in the open! The windows were open about 1cm each Angry

Shia · 25/07/2014 14:15

1cm open provides no relief.

My pram has arrived!

Puppy is sleeping but I will update later.

Shia · 25/07/2014 14:45

On the phone with pet plan.

A foreigner. Whippet is pronounced Vippet!

I can't understand him very well.

Shia · 25/07/2014 15:27

Got there in the end.

He gave me a price. I then stumped him by saying that the quote I got online was £3. a month cheaper.

He agreed to match online price.

£27.78 a month £4000 life cover

moosemama · 25/07/2014 19:28

Oh crikey - I thought you meant someone had lifted a crate out of the car and put it down in the carpark - poor dogs. Sad

Shia · 01/08/2014 12:51

Time is passing by very quickly. Whippet is now nearly 12 weeks!

He seems to be changing colour! He was black and white but now in the black fur on his body there are lots of brown hairs coming through!

We were shown a photo of his dad and his dad was brindle and white. His mum was mainly black.

Is this common?

PeanutPatty · 01/08/2014 18:03

Cinnamon your options in that situation are:

Go back into the store and tannoy the owners saying dogs in distress

Call RSPCA 24 hr cruelty hotline -
They will send the police to attend and the owners will get a bollocking

Call 101 but the Police may say no units in the area to attend if they are busy

I always call the RSPCA to ensure the police attend as they definitely will if the RSPCA are involved.

If the dogs are crated in the boot and the crate is lockable then why don't they open the boot and the windows and let the poor overheating dogs get some bloody air.

CMOTDibbler · 02/08/2014 10:18

Shia, I think its fairly common for colour to change with time. Ours had no visible skin spots as a puppy, but now would look like a dalmation if you shaved him, though his coat is tan and white.

We are going to look at a rescue puppy this afternoon Grin one of Aris' for those who follow EGLR. I fell in love with the blue boys as soon as they were born, but have let DH, DS and our cleaner (who is the rock of this household) campaign heavily for one to join us while pretending to be very unsure about being a two dog household Blush

mistlethrush · 02/08/2014 18:22

I think we're getting a 7yo border terrier passed from a relative. Two sight hounds would be better - but I hope we can give this poor little mite a more interesting home with lots of love and hopefully quite a bit of doggy play too in time. Went down and took her out for the day - most of the time mistlehound ignored her, wasn't worried about lying down relatively close, did not want the BT to lunge in her direction and a bit snappy around food, but I think that's quite understandably really.

PeanutPatty · 02/08/2014 18:47

CMOT those pups are absolutely stunning!

Mistle that's lovely. Your family member is lucky! Terrors and lurchers tend to compliment each other well I think?

PeanutPatty · 02/08/2014 18:48

Terrors?? ShockShockConfusedConfused

Terriers!

mistlethrush · 02/08/2014 19:34

CMot those pupps look beautiful.

If anyone wants some puppy love but can't take one on full time, Maggie's puppies on LL need foster homes - as does Maggie.

CMOTDibbler · 02/08/2014 20:30

Sooo, we took cmotdog to visit Rolo today, and they got on fine, and Rolo is gorgeous. So 2 weeks tomorrow, he'll be coming home Grin

mistlethrush · 02/08/2014 21:35

OOOoh new puppy on thread!

cinnamongreyhound · 03/08/2014 21:10

Oh so exciting! I keep seeing all the puppies but we really can't have another. The lady we got Lola from has a child and cat friendly grew who's 2 but dh says no!!

Thanks for the info peanutpatty, not been on for a while!

Anyone going to the GBGW show next Sunday in Braintree?

velouria · 05/08/2014 01:28

PeanutPatty, what colour is your foster/adoption doggy Blue? I have a bizarre feeling from your description that it may be my Blue :S.

I left my ex in a bit of a hurry and went to stay with my sister, he gave my beloved dog to a randomer from pets4u or somesuch thing, I was devestated. Would feel so much better if my beloved whippy had a nice home.

velouria · 05/08/2014 01:36

It was the random puking that had my spidey senses tingling btw, my Blue was the pukiest dog known to either Human or Dog kind lol, there was a lot of vomit haha, miss him so much :p.

mistlethrush · 05/08/2014 07:02

That's so sad Velouria. I saw a 'do you recognise this place' photo where a man was looking for his two dogs which his ex partner had stolen and he was trying to track them down.

PeanutPatty · 05/08/2014 13:41

Hi Velouria, he is Blue and a Grey x Whip. He hasn't been puking so not sure it's me and perhaps another poster?

velouria · 07/08/2014 02:35

Ahh not my Blue then, but thanks for answering Smile, mine is black with a white splodge on his chest, I do miss him so, he was a pain but used to sleep with me every night and basically sit on my head whenever I was still Grin.

Do hope he has found a nice home .

kerpob · 08/08/2014 17:12

Hi I'm new on this thread and hoping you could give me some advice please? We've two whippet/lurcher/greyhound kind of x rescue dogs. Ddog1 we got two years ago, almost four years old now, calm, sweet natured dog likes his own space at home, very easy dog. Ddog2 is almost two, we have him a year, much more playful and boisterous, likes to sit on top of you at any opportunity but seems more anxious of loud noises, shakes sometimes and generally clingy.

We've noticed ddog1 has become much more aggressive round other dogs when on a walk, since the younger dog has arrived. He used to be no difficulty whatsoever and very well socialised with other dogs. He growls and barks and is quite aggressive and it makes walks a very difficult experience now. It used to be only bigger dogs but now it's even very small ones. Ddog2 is scared of most other dogs generally and has been since we got him.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

mistlethrush · 08/08/2014 18:07

I would say get along to one of Jim Greenwood's sessions if you can - they're often advertised on the Lurcher LInk site and he also has a facebook page where things come - you would get some fantastic help with them. But from attending those, I would say that, possibly Dog1 feels that he needs to 'be in charge' of taking care of dog2 because he needs protecting - in which case you need to demonstrate to Dog 1 that everything's fine, he doesn't need to take the lead, and that's your job. That doesn't mean beating him down the 'pecking order' as some dog trainers might suggest Hmm but actually taking the lead in situations - putting yourself in between him and the on coming dog, keeping him on a loose lead but behind you etc even being the one to approach other (friendly) dogs with him well behind you not needing to do any approaching at all. I have always found that telling my dogs when the dog approaching looks as though its a nice dog has helped too - it makes my dog relax and makes the oncoming dog relax and then it turns waggy instead of stand-offish.
