Dog Insurance

Currently being fleeced by pet plan and just wondered who everyone else was using.

Have a 6 year old Black Lab dog and a 5 year old Jack Russell bitch - never claimed for either if them but the Lab now costs more than the car to insure each month!

I've just renewed with Tesco pet insurance. They were half the price of most places for my doberman.

To be fair you are far more likely to claim for the Labrador than the car.
Have you made any claims previously? If so remember these conditions will be excluded from any policy with a new company.
With a lab I would always by a lifetime policy as many of them end up with geriatric health conditions requiring years of treatment.

I have a 1 year old lab and pay £28/month, how much is it for a 5 year old?

We used ours a few days ago when ddog was I'll and needed X-rays, 2 days in vets and meds. covered a £465 bill! So we've had our money back so far.

We have a 3 year old labrador bitch and pay £13 per month for her, and that is for up to £7,000 per year (not per illness which is what you have to watch out for!)

We're with Tesco and have been caught out by the one ailment small print. So lab has had arthritis for several years but we only got a small payout for meds for one year and then nothing for anything related to legs/hips. Otherwise he has been well for 14 years so it's been a costly but I guess prudent exercise.

I recently had a call from our vet when our dog suddenly became very ill in their care. She was very relived when I said our cover was with Petplan because she knew cheaper insurers were unlikely to pay for the specialist scans and she was going to recommend and the likely resulting surgery.

Slongette, go over the dogs' vet records with a fine tooth comb because any new insurer will look for reasons to slap exclusions on. So if one had ever been lame on a back leg back in the mists of time with a strain, for example, and then busts a cruciate next year, you're stuffed.

We've got the all singing all dancing insurance policies for both dogs through petplan. Looking over the past couple of days there is nothing out there to match it so we may well be staying where we are.

Our garden is currently a building site so we've decided to stay with what we've got for the next year or so for peace of mind!

I'm with Purely Pets - cheaper than pet plan for similar lifetime cover (they do have a lower price limit on cruciate repair and no behavioural cover, but they're the only differences I remember).

So far they've paid out for, three sets of x-rays, a CT scan, an elbow operation, a pain specialist and ongoing medication for the last two years with no quibbles and very quickly.

The only issue I've had is that not many vets will accept direct payments from them, so I have to pay and then claim it back - but it usually arrives in about a week.

My mums dog is with tesco insurance, they pay 25 pound a month. Her dog was very sick (her platelet count was 7 at her lowest point) And so far they have paid out around 13 grand for things such as specialist scans, chemo treatments, steroids etc and they continue to pay out for her ongoing treatments.
