All of Cesar Millan's books from all of their shops! Good news I thought I'd share Grin

Bloody good thing too.

I was in a local park recently and a young woman was 'training' her dog, a beautiful female staffi, using what appeared to be some of Milan's methods. It looked nasty and was extremely distressing to see.

I know it was nothing to do with me but I couldn't just walk by so asked her, hopefully in a non confrontational way, what made her chose that method to train her dog. Perhaps surprisingly, she didn't tell me to mind my own business, and we talked about it a bit. She seemed a perfectly pleasant person and I hope maybe what I said made her think about her method of domination: pushing the dog's head down every time it raised its head to look up - the dog was lying on its side most of the time, rolling it onto its back and leaning over it and pulling it around by its legs were a few of the things she did, and as I walked away, she seemed to be sitting on or over the dog's head.

I don't know if these are things Milan does as such - she said she's read some of his stuff - but what I find hard to understand is what exactly this method is supposed to achieve. As far as I could see the dog in the park was learning nothing of any value, only that if it lifts its head off the ground at the wrong time its head will be roughly shoved down again.

Where's the joy in dog ownership if all your dog sees is someone who wants to bully it?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/03/2014 00:06

^'rolling it onto its back and leaning over it and pulling it around by its legs were a few of the things she did, and as I walked away, she seemed to be sitting on or over the dog's head.'*

Words fail me. I've never read any of his stuff. Does he really advocate that sort of thing?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/03/2014 00:07

Oh ffs bloody italic fail again!

(see I can do it)

pigsDOfly · 28/03/2014 00:14

Not sure if he does those things exactly Ilove I rather got the impression she was using a bit of his stuff and then making up the rest as she went along. The only thing I know he does is the rolling the dog on its back. At least she wasn't punching the poor dog, which is something he's famous for doing.

threestepsforward · 28/03/2014 00:28

Pigs, well done you for speaking out. Sounds like the perfect recipe for instilling fear aggression to me, but what would i know?

Do you know I've had it with shitty behaviour to dogs lately...

If the rescue I'm rehoming my dog from at the weekend wasn't able to take 'my' dog (Smile) from the pound, he wouldn't be here now. I can't bring myself to think about all the others that weren't so fortunate :(

I'm feeling very disillusioned at the mo

HavantGuard · 28/03/2014 12:04

So it's not just me who hides his book?

I loved the dog shaming site but stopped using it when I saw an advert for him. I contacted the site owner and they defended it.

What I find a shame is that some of his methods; no speak, no touch, no eye contact for overly excited dogs and walking back the other way for dogs that pull, are good, sound and NOT cruel.

I was horrified with some of the other things he does, and the spike and shock collars just disgust me.

I don't understand how he goes from one extreme to the other?

As a matter of interest, what do people think of Victoria Stillwell?

HavantGuard · 28/03/2014 12:25

I've never seen her advocate anything cruel.

Lilcamper · 28/03/2014 12:43

Victoria has moved with the times and is one of the good guys.

From her website. It all sounds sensible.

GeorgianMumto5 · 28/03/2014 13:22

Dd, who 10 and very serious about dog training, rates Victoria Stilwell highly. I'm told Stilwell bases her stuff on someone else, but I forget who. Anyway, the someone else is all positive and favours clicker training, which is how dd and I are training ddog.

My mum trained her dog the Cesar way but used no aggressive methods, so either he has some less extreme books or she cherry-picked. There was certainly no hitting, shocking, prodding, etc. That he advocates aggressive methods is news to me, but I was aware of his adherence to discredited pack theory. 'News' as in,'I did not know', not as in I am questioning your claims.

CalamityKate · 28/03/2014 13:46

Victoria Stilwell used to spout pack theory and rank reduction but she educated herself and now uses positive only methods. She's great.

Lilcamper · 28/03/2014 14:12

whispers I met her at Crufts, she was luffly Blush

I've been hiding CM books for years and putting cklicker books to the front. Great news that they won't be sold in there any more though! PMSL at them being hidden under the tripe!

I alpha roll my dog, but only when she Labrador bombs me when I'm lying on the bean bag Grin our longest alpha roll to date has been about 3 metres on account she alpha rolls me right back.

HavantGuard · 28/03/2014 14:47

WTF is an 'alpha roll'?

LtEveDallas · 28/03/2014 15:17

My house this weekend and only one of them is mine. If I tried Alpha rolling the other two I think I may lose my head - I've already lost the sofa!

Im glad people like VS by the way

CalamityKate · 28/03/2014 18:05

I think she's fab and the fact she was willing to change her opinion/methods as science learned more just makes me respect her more.

HavantGuard · 28/03/2014 18:13

You need to buy another sofa

And on the plus side they're sharing nicely. Just not with you Grin

LtEveDallas · 28/03/2014 18:43

I'm thinking I may well be kicked out of my bed tonight. They all have their own, but what's the betting they won't use them?

pigsDOfly · 28/03/2014 18:50

Thank you threesteps. I was a bit taken aback by myself tbh but it really upset me to see it.

She said to me at one point 'I love my dog' and she probably does, but that's what's so poisonous about people like Milan, when people see him spouting his crap on tv they think he's an 'expert' and therefore must be right. Of course not everything he advocates is cruel and unacceptable but I hope we won't see him on our tv screens again.

Victoria Stillwell is one of the good guys.

Owllady · 28/03/2014 19:01

I don't know what alpha rolling is either!
When we went to see about getting a dog from our rescue, we were given a list of things we were not allowed to do to the dog, alpha rolling was one, hitting/grabbing them between the shoulder blades was another, hitting kicking etc Shock
Me and my husband kept saying to the home checker, what?? Ppl do thus? Why would someone do that etc?
But apparently ppl do :(
