kennel cough vaccine and multiple dogs

Dog1 is due his booster, and we also get him the kennel cough vaccine. Thing is, other dog isn't due his booster until may and has never had the kennel cough vaccine. Will dog1 be contagious? Vet receptionist seemed unsure and I'd rather take them down together if necessary than do two trips.

Snakey, I didn't think about it tbh. Ddog2 is vaccinated and has had his annual booster. The puppy will have his on Tuesday. In an unscientific study of one, the puppy has been fine, and our vets didn't mention.

Ok. Then I shall just take dog1 down today. I was a bit confused because the kennels we use insist that kennel cough vaccines are given at least 3 weeks prior to booking in if you vaccinate to stop it spreading (?) Don't want the little fella to end up infected if there's a risk.

Sorry I meant ddog1 in my first post. I did stupidly think you only needed kennel cough vaccinations if you were thinking of using kennels. It's become part of the standard vaccinations covered by my vet plan that I have, so did question this, it's pretty common, which I didn't know, and contagious too, so understand your concern.

No dd2 should not get kennel cough from your dog that is vaccinated however both dogs can still get kennel cough as it only covers various strains.

The reason it has to be administered before going into kennels is to give time for immunity to develop.

Occasionally individual dogs get mild symptoms of kennel cough after vaccination they are not infectious to other dogs.
It takes 72 hours for the vaccine to be giving full protection, but many kennels still hark back to an incredibly old vaccine that has been around for over 10 years.

My understanding of the data sheet (based on Nobivac KC) is that the 72 hours refers to Bordetella only, Lonecat, and the three weeks refers to parainfluenza cover.

Ah then we need to get into discussion as to whether this is there only parainfluenza vaccination, if it is whether they previously were vaccinated for parainfluenza in which case this is a booster or whether they are naive.

I think with the move to using L4 it will become more important. We included Pi in all our vaccinations until L4 came along and now that we can't it's something I am having to point out to owners and kennels.

We are still in the first year of L4 so apart from puppies all around dogs still have pre-existing Pi cover so this is next years discussion. This year is please return at 4 weeks for second L4.

Off topic but are the vets that have switched to L4 seeing any lepto? Rep is pushing it but I've only seen one case of lepto in 15 yrs and it was an unvaccinated dog.

We reckon to see a case about every 2 years hence our switch about 25% have been in vaccinated dogs. But we have a canal and two rivers running through our towns.

We've had two deaths in the last three years, unvaccinated dogs.

Dogs in our area are at greater risk of lepto than the viral diseases IMO, and I don't think there's enough surveillance data to know which strains are present where. Personally I think it's a case of offering the best we can get to our clients but making sure they understand that it isn't perfect.

I would agree with Cashew about wanting to offer clients the best cover.
