new pup for lazy owner

I've been separated for 3 years and had to give up my bull mastiff puppy(I've only ever had bull mastiffs) when we split. I have my own home now and am thinking I'd like to get a dog. I don't want another mastiff but can't bear little dogs. I'd like a chunky one that I can manage myself but also that hardly need exercise!!
Any ideas?

I don't think a dog that needs 'hardly any exercise' exists! How much were you thinking of exactly per day?

We had bull mastiffs for 25 years and they hardly got taken out! I was thinking about 30mins a day. Why do you think its a disaster - genuine question?

Contrary to popular opinion, greyhounds don't need a lot of exercise - and there are always lots needing re-homing

Is there a particular reason why you wouldn't be able to give a dog much exercise? You probably wouldn't have a very happy dog on your hands if you didn't take it for a walk a couple of times a day - whatever the breed. How about an elderly rescue dog? Or a cat?!

Sorry couldn't do a cat!! I think I have the time to walk a dog but don't want one like my daughters beagle who can run for hours have a ten minute rest and then want to go out again. i think I want a dog I can walk with not one that wants to work on a farm all day

I second greyhounds, but you do still need to walk them.

I'm assuming you work too? So on top of only getting the briefest of walks, the poor dog will be spending hours on end by itself?

Please, please tell me you don't actually mean a puppy? It would be bad enough enforcing your regime on an older dog, but for a puppy that would be tantamount to neglect!

Also you aren't supposed to walk a puppy much because of their development. I do know about looking after a dog we have had 25 years of healthy happy dogs, I just don't want a dog that wants to run all day. I don't understand why you'd think I am going to neglect my dog?

Why don't you try a rescue who can maybe match a dog with your requirements?

Although any dog will want walking, even if not for the exercise, for the change of scenery and some lovely new smells and sniffing.

The Kennel Club lists bull mastiffs as a breed that need 2+ hours of exercise a day. Just because dogs may adapt to lack of exercise doesn't mean you're meeting their needs.

Another vote for a greyhound :) they're a tall dog, although skinny so not little by any imagibation but they're very lazy indeed and only need a couple of short walks a day, sometimes ours is happy once round the block if someone's in with him most of the day

There's loads needing rehoming, ours is an ex racer - peopld assume they're high maintence in terms of exercise but nothing could be further from the truth, lovely, soft, loyal, lazy dogs!!

They aren't supposed to be run a lot though because they are too heavy for their bones. My dogs have always been very happy and had all their needs met. I only wanted advice on a type that wouldn't want to live on a farm and run all day. Not a personal attack!!!

As a responsible dog owner, I ensure my dog is walked at least an hour a day (westie) even when I've been told by other dog owners that 'small dogs don't need long walks'.

Until he's so old to not be up to stimulation, long walks and lots of love I'll be at his mercy, because that's what responsible dog owners do.

I think I know someone who rescued a greyhound I will ask her advice. She also knows how we treated our mastiffs and knows we treated them very well!!!

It sounds like neglect because in all fairness, you don't sound very invested in the idea. Puppies are damn hard work. Yes they require less walking, but need LOADS of training, endless socialisation,classes and human company. Your OP comes across like you can't be bothered to walk it, so why should it appear to us that you want to do the rest? You categorised yourself as lazy! That's one thing you can't be with a puppy!!!

Then when it's old enough, it will need more than the minuscule 30 minutes you want to give it. It will be old enough after 6 months of age!!!!

I ave said nothing about the amount of time and attention I will give my dog just that I am not the sort who wants to yomp for hours

Also exercise can be playing in the garden with me, my DCs and DGcs it doesn't have to mean I take it out, which is what we do with out dogs. I just don't want to have to walk for miles every day.

Well to some breeds 30 mins is more than enough A toy dog would struggle with too much more as would a great big heavy dog.. I don't think I need to discuss what you all think is right or wrong about the way my family and I treat our dogs, I just wanted advice on breeds that would need less than others.

30mins walking a day, with someone home all day, is enough for a greyhound :)

Thank you Sooperdooper. MOUSMOUS. I am willing to put work in not just yomping for hours a day. And I can't believe all the people who have happy healthy dogs do. How on earth do people in cities manage?

I work around my dog, full time weirdly enough.

I didn't get a dog on the basis it didn't need much exercise - that would be irresponsible.
