Wtf is wrong with my dog??

Worst night ever. He wouldn't just lay down on or under the bed like he usually does, he was panting like crazy and barking and growling.

I went and let him out at 1am in case that was the problem but he carried on after he came in.

About 3 he started growling under the bed and woke up my baby... I got down on the floor to tell him to get out and as I reached to stroke his nose he bit me. Quite badly and it bled for a while.

(He has bitten once before, years ago, when my oldest DC was a baby and a strange man grabbed his face, but we immediately got a police dog handler round the house to help and he's been amazing since.)

I've checked him all over today to see if anything hurts and it doesn't seem to, the only new thing he has (which I'm sure is nothing) is a little wart on his tail.

He's a 7 year old cocker spaniel and we really love him. He's very restless even now and panting like crazy. He occasionally lays down and trembles Confused

He does need a haircut but
not desperately so, and it's not hot.

I can't take him to the vet by myself with a toddler and a baby but have booked an appointment tomorrow evening when DH would be here.

Ideally I want to take him now Sad I'm so worried.

I wouldn't worry about getting him to eat (and may not be a good idea anyway in case the vet needs to give him anaesthetic. How about what others have suggested, take him to the vet and leave him there for examination? I'm sure if you called them and explained the situation then you could drop him outside the front door and the vet nurses could come and collect him from the car.

AbouttoCrack · 05/02/2014 10:37

I agree. Get him to the vet this morning. He can't wait for later. See if they will come and get him if necessary.
Poor dog and poor you.

curiousgeorgie · 05/02/2014 10:41

Vet didn't have any appointments this morning as only one vet in until lunchtime.. I've got the 6.45 appointment but I'm trying to go earlier... Just ringing some people.

AbouttoCrack · 05/02/2014 10:42

Best of luck.

1MitchellMum · 05/02/2014 10:46

If you explain how urgent it is then they could probably shuffle appointments around.

LEMmingaround · 05/02/2014 10:46

Good luck - he does sound like he is poorly - what colour is he?

curiousgeorgie · 05/02/2014 10:50

He's black and white.. (Blue roan)

curiousgeorgie · 05/02/2014 10:59

I don't know how to post a picture but he is going crazy... Hes gone behind the tv where all the wires are, is scrabbling around and in trying to get him out but he's biting me!!!

OP posts:
curiousgeorgie · 05/02/2014 11:00

Oh my god I'm going to just cry... What the hell is wrong with him!!

OP posts:
1MitchellMum · 05/02/2014 11:00

You really need help with him now, is there no-one that can come and help you?

1MitchellMum · 05/02/2014 11:02

Whereabouts in the country are you? Just on the offchance that someone on here is local to you?

tabulahrasa · 05/02/2014 11:03

Sad If you're anywhere in the central belt of Scotland I'll come and help you get to the vet.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/02/2014 11:03

Do you have any mobile vet services in your area that could come to you? It'll be expensive but, by the sounds of it, worth it.

lougle · 05/02/2014 11:04

This might sound completely stupid, and I'm sure pain is a better explanation, but what's the weather like?

Could he have been spooked by the high winds that people are having?

1MitchellMum · 05/02/2014 11:06

Good thought lougle ...

coffeeinbed · 05/02/2014 11:06

Hmmm
My dog goes bonkers when there's high howling winds.

Do get him to the vet though.

curiousgeorgie · 05/02/2014 11:07

Yes, it's really windy, the weather is awful. I'm in Surrey, Epsom.

He's never been bothered by weather before, or fireworks or anything. He's never been like this before!!!

lougle · 05/02/2014 11:08

Even if it is that, if he's biting you he's beyond 'a quick pat and a stroke' and may need some sedatives to calm him.

If it's pain, then hopefully the vet will be able to identify it.

Are you both safe? Has he stopped biting you? Is he out from behind the TV?

Countrywalks · 05/02/2014 11:10

I would tell the vet what's happening and your difficulties getting to them now with child care issues. Our vets have done home visits before . Please ring them and see if they will come out now. Your poor dog.

D0oinMeCleanin · 05/02/2014 11:10

One of mine also goes batshit when there is wind.

However you do need to see a vet just in case.

I know it's hard but try to stay calm. The dog will be able to pick up on how stressed/frightened you are and it will be making him more stressed. Don't forcibly remove him from behind the TV. That is going to stress you and him even more. Make the room quite, set up a safe, quiet space for him in the room the TV is in and put some food down. Once he does come out, pop his lead on and lead him to the quietest room in the house, leave him there with his bed and some water until you find a way to get him to the vets, sooner rather than later.

Countrywalks · 05/02/2014 11:11

And poor you.

1MitchellMum · 05/02/2014 11:11

Dogs can change as they get older ... as you're in a town maybe there's another vet you could take him too (or get one to come out to you?)

LEMmingaround · 05/02/2014 11:11

Where are you OP? i'll take him for you if you are near me. I am in kent (somewhere by the sea) PM me if you think i might be close by.

It might not be pain, it might be "itchy" my poor dog was very similar when he had an allergic reaction to something, although there were other symptoms - hives and swelling around his mouth.

I think in the mean time if you just leave him be - i know its difficult to do but it might be best not to over stimulate him. whip the wires out from the wall so he can't do any damage - turn the lights off, tv off etc and just keep him as quiet as possible.

If you explain the situation to your vet they may well send one of the nurses to fetch him.

Vet. Call whoever you have to about your DC. Tell the vet this is an emergency.
