I live rurally in a hamlet of approx 30 houses if that. there is a horse stud here and lots of dogs about.

for a while now there has been a puppy out and about during the day. every day in all weather's, just roaming in the roads. she's about 8 months old and I have lost count of the amount of times I've nearly.mowed her down.

the owners know she is out and aren't bothered. she's just a 'yard dog ' and only supposed to be in the house at.night. so she spends a lot of time sat on my doorstep!

it's raining hard today and of course she was out in it. I've taken pity on her and she's.currently asleep on my sofa.

so - it's got me thinking. I could look.after her no problem. but I surely can't just call someone that I barely.know and say " can I have your dog please as you're obviously not.bothered? " can I? or can I?

Do you think they'd interpret it as you telling them off and get nasty with you?

I would carry on allowing the puppy in, tbh. Although I suppose that is the wrong thing to do. But I'm soft

You really need to offer to have her. That's horrendous.

I was thinking I could word it like ' oh we really want this sort of puppy please tell me where you got her from? " and then " err could.we buy yours?!"

oh I don't know! it's ridiculous of me. she has owners and it's.not my business that she's roaming about is it? that's what they've chosen to do. and I hardly live in a.city centre

I was about to come and say yes, I had it lots when my pup was little and it really freaked me out to be honest! In my case I live in an area where people do work terriers and I had a couple of times people in battered transit vans U turned in the street and asked me to sell him...it scared me a couple of times!

But in those circumstances, I'd be tempted to get friendly, tell them he's popping around and take the tack that you have really fallen for him. Bear in mind that they could say no. Or they could take your cash and go out and get another pup to treat the same

As you said in the post that you lost count of the amount of times you nearly mowed her down. If I were you, I'd make an offer and make her yours before you get too emotionally attached to her and investing all your time and affection. At least then she will be your responsibilty.

oh I'm definitely not the type to pull up in my transit and offer to buy a dog that's definitely odd

she's also in season as I've just discovered. hmm!! so I've popped her in the kitchen with a blanket by the radiator

Is this the only dog that's roaming around at large? If so, fine, do as fan says, be friendly and say she's made friends with you and you wonder if there's any way they'd be willing to sell her. If not and she carries on being out and about, or if there are lots of loose dogs, maybe a call to the RSPCA might be an idea?

loose dogs are not rare but they're more escape artists than anything else and soon rounded up. most people own a dog or two in the village.

as it's sunny I've popped her outside now. she's not mine so it's not right to keep her in my house.

If you do buy her, beware that there is a chance she will have been mated if she's been allowed to roam. Would be sensible to pop her along to your vet to discuss your options at the earliest opportunity.

well she's also jumping with fleas and has dripped blood all over my carpet! I've not allowed her inside today because.. well, she's not my dog at the.end of the day.

I'd report them to the RSPCA, whether they agree to sell her to you or not.

When she gets out next, bring her, phone the dog warden and tell them you've found a stray. The dog warden will collect her and after 7 days you can adopt her and might even get a voucher to help towards the cost of spaying her or they find her and will have to pay a release fee, in which case they'll either pay up and keep a closer eye on her or they will relinquish her to the pound and you can adopt her sooner.

If you offer them a financial reward for mistreating their dog they will only go and do it again, eventually you will run out of space for their dogs.

An alternative would be for to get "lost" and accidentally end up in a rescue across the other side of the country

Well I was in the Vet's waiting room and a man waiting there with his staffie said that he saw the dog a few times with some kid who clearly didn't have the dog's best interest at heart, so he stuck £100 in cash in front of the kid's face and hey presto, he had a new dog. didn't take long for that boy to decide the £££ was more interesting than the staffie.
So OP, it does happen and no I don't think it's weird!

so if I call.the dog warden and they collect her. what efforts do they make to locate the owners? she won't be micro chipped that's for sure! I can say to the warden that id have her can I?

it's worth mentioning that these people are wealthy by the way. they own race horses etc and are well to do. this dog is merely a yard dog who keeps getting out. hence why she's.not flea treated, spayed or wormed

have owned dogs 40 years. now unable to find small breed one to buy or adopt in london

You should try! I offered to buy a dog who lived in a flat and never went out, owner took me up on it a few months later.
