Incontinent dog - is there anything we can do?

My 8 year old bitch has become incontinent - she wees herself whenever she is relaxed.

It started a few months ago - she had a really nasty cough, and suddenly started wetting her bed. We thought it was either the physical strain of coughing, or the medication that she was on for the cough.

However, since then she has continued. She will wee when she's asleep, but also any time that she relaxes she dribbles wee. She has started licking herself to clean it up, while carrying on weeing.

We mentioned it to the vet and he said that it is common in spayed bitches, and that often when they get older they just get lazy about going out for a wee so often, so they wet themselves. We keep encouraging her to go outside, but she's a fussy little madam and will refuse if it's raining or cold! If we force her outside, she will just stand there looking at us until she's allowed back in!

I think the vet said there was some medication that could help - does anyone have any experience of this? I guess it's pretty common.

In the meantime, thank god for cheap IKEA fleecy blankets which you can wash and dry in an instant!

There are several different medications, once you have ruled out infection these medications are enormously effective at stopping the incontinence.

THanks Lonecat My DP wasn't keen on medication, but I think it's necessary now. Plus I can't stand the constant smell of stale wee!!!

She's usually a fastidiously clean dog as well (Boxer, always cleaning herself like a cat!), so I think it's kinder to her as she probably doesn't like stinking of wee either.

You can also get dogs pants from Equafleece (among others) and use disposable pads in them if the dribblingis an issue.
