Three year old dog just started soiling in the house at night

We've had our dog two years. Just recently he's started urinating in the house at night and this morning I woke up and found he'd done it twice and also had a poo on the kitchen floor. I really don't know why he's had this sudden change of behaviour as he's always been a clean dog. Any ideas of what I could do?

I reckon it's because of winter. When the weather is warmer does he have more opportunities to go into the garden easily if the door is left open? Is he reluctant to go out in the cold and the dark for a wee/poo before bed, or do you forget to take him?

Try moving his meal time so that his patterns of evacuation fit in better with daylight hours and so he doesn't get the urge to go while you are asleep. My dog does this very occasionally, and I know it is only because she really needs to go and cannot get out, because she does it by the back door!

Meant to say if you just open the door for him to go out and he refuse it might be reluctance because of the cold/darkwet. Mine hates walking on the ground if it's been raining. You should make sure you put him on the lead and actually walk him for 5 or ten minutes before you go to bed. It will force him to go out, and will give him a chance to realise he needs to go.
