Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

MrsWooster - contact Evesham Greyhound and lurcher rescue, they'll be able to help find a new home for your girl

PeanutPatty · 28/12/2013 21:36

You can post her on Lurcher Link in the Other Homeless Hounds section. Hounds First also seem to be a very reputable organisation.

cinnamongreyhound · 29/12/2013 21:00

We did a lovely 5mile run today with 2 other lurchers. One is quite new to our group as she was only recently rescued having been abandoned. She's quite a vocal dog but today she had some more growly snappy moment with peanut and Lola as they ran back to me having been called after getting too far ahead. Just wondered if any if you with more experience feel this could be a potential problem? Peanut kind of stepped back and Lola came to me and kid of hid the few times it happened.

We also walked with my two and my neighbours girls just as it was getting dark tonight. The kids were all taking it in turns to hold leads apart from ds2 and the dogs were very good.

CMOTDibbler · 29/12/2013 21:26

It was a lovely day for it Cinnamon. We went for a walk with bil, his girlfriend and their dogs on the local hill range and cmotdog was running up and down the hills at high speed. The adult humans walked 5 miles, ds probably 6 and cmotdog more like 30 as he did laps of us.

I guess maybe the new dog is going to be feeling very insecure right now, and maybe thats the reason for growlyness?

PeanutPatty · 29/12/2013 22:34

I took Pooch out on my own. Was really icy here and the children would have struggled. Took the ball chucker as need to shift some poundage off her due to the recall treats. I will say that her recall has improved so much. Walking her has become enjoyable again!Grin

Cinnamon, I'm not experienced, but perhaps the new dog was unsettled by the running dogs and humans as its a new experience? Would the owner consider muzzling if you are concerned about the growling and snapping?

cinnamongreyhound · 30/12/2013 08:25

She's been with us at least 4 times before so I was kind of wondering if she's feeling more confident and trying to be a bit more dominant. So far my two are just backing away but I'd hate a fight. I'm just not sure if there's anything to worry about because peanut and Lola can be quite growly together when they play together.

PeanutPatty · 30/12/2013 14:24

Perhaps asserting her authority now she knows the drill? I guess as long as your two don't react and do as this dominant bitch says then all will be ok? What does her owner say?

cinnamongreyhound · 30/12/2013 14:34

She says no and be nice and did put her back on her line after a few times. She's fine when they trot along together it's just as they run back when they've sped off and I call them back. Hoping they all get used to each other but just thought there might be some words of wisdom to smooth things over or even that it sounded normal and I shouldn't worry!

MuttonCadet · 30/12/2013 18:12

I hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas, muttondog is settling in nicely.

Today we were in by ourselves and she decided to have a mad couple of minutes and then barked at me (first time we've heard her bark), but hse was in a very playful pose so I took her into the garden for a play. She loves chasing her ball, but isn't great at bringing it back....

mistlethrush · 31/12/2013 18:38

Mistlehound has 'worked out' 'fetch' now, although she doesn't always want to play it. It took her about 6 months. She will even wait whilst you pick something up before trying to grab it now!

DH had to take her to the vet last night as her paw had swollen up - she's on AB injections (due to the intollerance to them) - but she seems very bright in herself and its not making her limp at all - the stitches came out at he same time.

Anytime a dog was appearing to get snappy with other sighthounds around, I would be suggesting a muzzle - its so easy for a snap to result in the need for stitches with such fine coats.

MuttonCadet · 31/12/2013 20:29

I hope mistlehound gets well soon!

mistlethrush · 31/12/2013 20:45

We're looking at the next 'boot' we can get her for walks - the PAH one is acceptable (just) for going down the garden but it really is not good enough for walks - I think that if we could get the right one she would be able to have almost normal length walks, perhaps even with a little bit of off-lead time, but the current boot is not good enough to allow her to do that. THere's quite a bit of healing still required - so I think that we could be looking at 3 - 4 weeks easily - so getting something decent is probably a sensible option.

mistlethrush · 31/12/2013 21:56

Put on mistlehound's Thundershirt this evening when the fireworks started... she has raised an eyebrow at a particularly big bang and gone back to sleep Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 01/01/2014 10:00

Just popping in to say Happy New Year to my fellow pointy owners. Smile

ShyDog did not appreciate the fireworks last night!

PatTheHammer I get quite emotional too so you're not the only big softy! I've had mine since last easter and I still can't stop cooing over her, welling up at her looking all cosy on her bed, running around happily, etc.

Do I have the only GH that isn't a bed or sofa hog? Having heard their reputation for this I was well prepared for her to take them over but she's never bothered and is happy enough on her own bed. Weirdly though when we went on a Haven holiday she spent nearly the whole time in the caravan on the sofa! Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 01/01/2014 10:02

I am on the lookout for a nice new collar for ShyDog - preferably in a nice bright pink if anyone sees one.

mistlethrush · 01/01/2014 10:31

Yourhand - some lovely pink options here - and that's just the 25mm size - and you can get the collar style you want there.

CMOTDibbler · 01/01/2014 10:46

Have a look at Meggie Moo YourHand. She has some really beautiful prints and theres a few bright pinks

MuttonCadet · 01/01/2014 11:05

Mutton hound didn't like the fireworks, but it was relatively quiet here last night.
She's not a sofa hogger either, just kind of collapses on the carpet in whichever room we're in.
Happy New Year everyone.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/01/2014 17:20

My nelly never got on the sofa in the whole time I got her!

Neither or mine are bother by fireworks thankfully!

Took Lola to parkrun this morning and she was a star! Apart from trying to wrap me round a lamp post she ran without stopping at all, only almost tripped up two people because she believes she can win and I got a pb. Peanut apparently cried when we left as I'm not allowed to take both anymore :(

Peanut is still frightened of my mums tiny puppy :( he really growled at him today and he still just keeps biting and jumping on his tail! My mum tells him off and I know she's quite worried about peanut but Lola and the puppy were playing today and she kept breaking it up, no aggression at all but he did keep jumping on her head!

Scuttlebutter · 01/01/2014 20:07

Another recommendation here for Meggie Moo collars. They really are beautiful quality, and she uses excellent quality metalwork. Martingale collars are now being made by such a wide variety of people, which is great, but there are a lot of variations in the quality of the stitching and the metalwork they use. Collars play such a vital safety role for sighthounds, I prefer to only use ones from really good suppliers. There's actually a lady on FB who has started a campaign for a BS (or kitemark) for dog collars/harnesses etc. - an excellent idea and long overdue.

We have a lovely greyhound friend in Somerset whose hound prefers the floor - definitely the exception that proves the rule!

mistlethrush · 01/01/2014 20:16

A collar aficionado put me on to the Houndstuff collars - I've seen them and they seem to wear really well too - very good quality

cinnamongreyhound · 01/01/2014 20:38

I got mine from dog o nine tails on fb, she has sight hounds and was very knowledgable and helpful when I ordered. They are very well made and have held up fantastically so far, showing no signs of wear. Don't know Meggie moo but if they're recommended here must be good :)

YourHandInMyHand · 01/01/2014 21:43

Ooh I like the Foxy Face fabric on houndstuff, very nice. Smile

Quality definitely varies, my last one was from a big seller on ebay, a matching martingale collar and lead and the collar was all frayed and coming apart within a fortnight and seller wasn't helpful or interested.

Am quite picky about which I like and veto about 98% of the ones I see. The amount of time I spend looking at collars is ridiculous!! Blush

mistlethrush · 01/01/2014 21:58

Yourhand - the person that put me onto Houndstuff is VERY picky - all collar to be the right thickness so it would not twist etc - she's on her second lurcher now and has gone back there for some that suit him - having had over 20 for her first lurcher...

PeanutPatty · 01/01/2014 22:20

Pray tell what a martingale collar is? Are they necessary for all Sighthounds?
