Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Awww, Santa paws is so cuteGrin

We've got Dee a bone and a new collar. I can guess which one she will be more bothered about!
She has not really been interested in the tree or presents but there is a cuddly Father Christmas near the fireplace who she seems determined should be hers. He's quite often to be found in her bed!

Left her all night yesterday as it was DHs posh Xmas do. My mil came and stayed to look after the kids and dog. She did herself proud, was impeccably behaved, no crying.
My goodness she was excited when we came home this morning though, never seen her like that before....she was beside herselfGrin

MuttonCadet · 22/12/2013 13:12

So far she has ignored all the presents, but doesn't understand the difference between her toys and the cuddly Santa, reindeer, snowmen etc (or socks and pants to be honest).

CMOTDibbler · 22/12/2013 15:15

Cmotdog has had a velvet lead for christmas.

We don't do presents under the tree here, and have a strict hierarchy of tree decorations going from cheap plastic at the bottom to beloved and delicate at the top. This is due to my old cat loving stealing everything he could get off the tree and then hiding them.

mistlethrush · 23/12/2013 09:03

Yes, we have unbreakable at the bottom moving to breakable at the top. Mistlehound has ignored it. She is now being sick quite a bit - I think its possibly a reaction to the antibiotics as the only time she was sick yesterday was after a dose - and she's not had any or been sick since. After being sick most of Saturday, including twice in the night, we're giving them a break until we see the vet for bandage care this evening.

If she can have her bandage off and we just need to keep her paw dry and clean, I think we'll get a different sort of dog boot - we got a PAH one - it is doing a good job stopping the waterproof bags puncturing but clearly doesn't fit too well and she doesn't like it on her foot and occasionally treads on it with her other foot.

CMOTDibbler · 23/12/2013 09:12

BILs partner has a spaniel who is very prone to getting his paws cut as he tunnels through bracken/brambles etc, and she has really neat dog boots for him that are very fitted. Maybe in a shop that caters for gun dogs?

Cmotdog now has a pointy friend! People two streets over appeared on the green a couple of weeks ago with him and so enjoyed seeing theirs running they now knock on our door for a playdate. DH got some good photos yesterday

mistlethrush · 23/12/2013 09:24

Looking at various ones online, these seem to look fairly sensible. Yes they are £££££ but that's probably one visit to the vet... so looking at it from that point of view, prepared to spend enough money to get the right thing to help it heal properly.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/12/2013 10:11

They look cool, not too expensive for only one paw :)

Be handy to wear a whole set outside and take off like shoes to save towels over the carpet Wink

mistlethrush · 23/12/2013 10:13

Mistlehound has resigned herself to having her feet wiped (well) when she comes in - even from the garden. She even lifts her weight off her paw when I touch it so that I can pick it up to wipe it properly (although the back ones tend to disappear and I have to catch them on the way past - and often have a wagging tail in my face as I wipe a very stretched out back leg!).

PatTheHammer · 23/12/2013 10:25

Grin Dee also holds up paws for me to wipe.

The fields are like bogs around here at the moment. I'm glad she doesn't really like puddles and mud, we saw some dogs out yesterday who were caked!

It's so windy and wet today I'm really not looking forward to lunchtime walk, especially as the kids will have to come and will moan as DH at work.

mistlethrush · 23/12/2013 10:28

We thought ours might be a roller in deep mud (some are) as she was drawn to puddles and mud when we had her on the lead prior-to formally adopting her (at which point we could let her off). However, she doesn't make a beeline for them - she does roll in 'smells' but is getting better. And most of her scruff is on the top, leaving her undercarriage and legs with short hair which towels off quite well. Xmas Grin and Phew!

PatTheHammer · 23/12/2013 10:35

Aww I would love a scruffy but it does put me off a bit, I find it annoying having to groom the children!

I've looked at the forecast and its meant to be gale force winds all day in this part if the south west. Thankfully she has been out at 7.30 with DH for 15 minutes so I'm thinking I will just pop out with her later for a short walk when the wind has died down. She is frightened of the wind anyway so I don't think she will mind.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/12/2013 11:24

I literally dragged Lola out yesterday morning because it was raining! Peanut doesn't mind any weather although haven't seen him in snow yet but Lola will jump over a puddle rather than step in it. Our other doggy went mad in the snow and wind, she was pretty old last winter but as soon as it snowed she jumped and ran around like a puppy!

mistlethrush · 24/12/2013 06:20

Bandage off. Wound looks clean. Its now wrapped up in a sock (one of DS's old ones) so that she can't pull the stitches out - much airier than the bandage. I've been on 'stop licking it' duty all night - woke up twice to stop her - and couldn't get back to sleep the 2nd time.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/12/2013 07:35

That's good news! What did they say about antibiotics making her sick?

We had such a terrible night here but the dogs managed to sleep through it! Going out for doggy run at 8.30 so they've been out in the garden and straight back to bed (his own in peanuts case and mine in dh's spot in Lola's!). Bins all over the place in the street but it's really calmed down now. Electricity must have been off too judging by cooker clock.

mistlethrush · 24/12/2013 07:37

They looked a little surprised - but not that much - and seemed to accept that it could well have been the antibs that resulted in the sickness.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/12/2013 07:49

Are they happy to stop them given that it looks clean?

mistlethrush · 24/12/2013 07:54

Yes, they thought she'd probably had sufficient before they started disagreeing with her

TooOldForGlitter · 24/12/2013 22:59

Checking out for a hectic Christmas and want to say have a fantastic time to all, hope it's all you want it to be and HUGE thanks for the advice and support since I joined this thread, absolutely invaluable. Cheers Xmas Grin.

cinnamongreyhound · 26/12/2013 16:49

Hope you've all had a lovely Christmas. We've had a chilled one, dogs been very lazy!

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 27/12/2013 20:21

Hello all Xmas Smile has everyone had a good christmas? On christmas day we opened our presents and then went to MILs for more presents and dinner, then we came home and discovered Sprocket had pee'd on the tree. My mum came round and we had more presents and I did a cold buffet type tea. Then yesterday we all went to my sisters for christmas #2, we had another christmas dinner and yet more presents! Came home and discovered Sprocket had pee'd on the tree. We went out today to shop for a new fridge and a few other bits, came home to no pee on the tree even though it still reeks of pee, I can't seem to get rid of the smell Xmas Confused It's impossible to clean so we're taking it down tomorrow and binning it.

Oh no, your poor tree!

We took the dogs with us Christmas Day so no probs with wee's here. Boxing Day we had breakfast with my family followed by cinema. Dh walked dogs in the evening as I felt rubbish but fine today so went for doggy run this morning, 5 miles, 5 dogs and a dip in the river. Been to panto and dinner so dogs on their own for a while today and were very pleased to see us. They had brekkie left overs yesterday which they loved!

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 27/12/2013 22:09

Sounds like you had a lovely time Cinnamon :) where did you go on christmas day?

I'm just wondering if Sprocket remembers last year and all the stress just after christmas when my brother was stabbed, we got called to the hospital at silly hours and all the rushing to get out the house was very stressful for him and he kept peeing on the tree then until he went into emergency foster care. Maybe he associates the tree with stressful situations?

Hi all, lovely few days at my mums down south for us. Dee enjoyed her first road trip. She was beautifully behaved as a house guest and although my family are all 'doggy' people they don't have any experience with greyhounds, well lets just say she charmed them with her gentle natureGrin
She did keep trying to get on my mums sofa but it must be confusing as she is allowed on ours. She also kind of enjoyed her first walk on the beach, the sea was a little rough and scary but the starfish and seaweed was all very interesting!
She also made a friend with my brothers Lurcher/Lab cross (who is crazy!) and they had a lovely chasing game in the garden much to the amusement of all the children.

It's silly but I kind if felt myself welling up a few times seeing her enjoy all the company as this was really the first big event she will have experienced as a family and I'm so glad we got her, sounds ridiculous really!

Back home now and it was also lovely to see her reaction to seeing her beloved sofa and familiar surroundings. Think she is getting a bit used to having us around all the time though and we are going to have to start going out for a bit each day without her otherwise going back to work will be tough.

Oh dear at the poor smelly tree! It does sound like a stress reaction. Sounds like a much better Christmas than last years though.

cinnamongreyhound · 28/12/2013 11:25

Poor sprocket, it could well be! They are such sensitive little things.

We went to my mums for Christmas Day, as usual my mum was late with food so dh and I ended up walking the dogs in the dark down a track near mums. Was actually really nice as we never get to go for a walk together without the kids :)

I know how you feel PatTheHammer! Peanut so enjoys so much of his life now and I'm so glad he can experience sleeping on a sofa and running with the other dogs. Lola was in a home for quite a few months so was a happy little thing when we got her but peanut hadn't been exposed to much other than a kennel when we got him.

MrsWooster · 28/12/2013 16:07

Please don't hate me but... We have a beautiful lurcher (fawn, rough coat, greyhound/retriever/??) who, after much agonising, I have decided to try and rehome. She lived with just me for 6 years and we suited each down to the ground - she just wants affection and a sofa to lie on whilst having her ears tickled and so do I. Things have changed and there are two under 3s, no time and a partner who tolerates her at best. From being the centre of attention, she is frankly neglected and lonely. She's (about) 10 and deserves that the last 6 or 7 years are as happy as they can be. She's gentle, affectionate and lazy, has lived with a cat and is fantastic with kids - though she prefers the quiet life... She CAN be iffy with other dogs, when she feels nervous it comes out as a snappy reaction but she is pretty good most of the time and happily goes out with a dog walker and jumps into her van and walks off the lead in the pack with no problems whatsoever. If you can, or know someone who can offer her a permanent loving home, PLEASE PM me - two potentially perfect homes have fallen through at the last minute and it's breaking my heart... Please don't bother to flame me - I've self immolated already.
