3yo dog crying at night

Grotbags42 · 15/12/2013 22:30

Help! I've a three year old male dog who is crate trained. He sleeps in his crate at night and during the day when we are at work. The last week he has been crying in his crate. He always goes in when he's asked- never had to force him. And never is it used as a punishment. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and wondering if he might be unsettled with me at all?? No behaviour changes in him so far tho.. Advice ?? Thanks x

Usually about 8 hours. And he's fine. As it's been the weekend he hasn't been in his crate during the day because I'm been home- but that's normal for him too... We had some funny crying with him early on in the year and moved him from the kitchen to the lounge which sempt to settle him. At the time we didn't know but I would of been about 5 weeks pregnant x

Wow thanks. That's really helpful. Up until three days ago he loves his crate and chooses to lay in it even when we are home, often taking himself for a lay down while we sit and watch TV - so get off your high horse. And if your haven't got anything constructive to say I suggest you don't say anything

If you read my second post he's been out of his crate all weekend as I've been home and only been crying for the past three nights so your question is irrelevant to my problem

My 1yo sleeps in her crate every night, and comes to work with me during the day.

I would never have gotten her if I thought she would have to stay in a crate with no company, whilst I was at work too.

Whats the point? It's cruel

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 15/12/2013 23:09

I really hate dogs, but also would never be cruel to any animal, dogs included.

Leaving a dog in a crate for 8 hours a day while everyone is out, and then again for a similar period at night, is inhumane and you deserve to be reported to the RSPCA.
The poor thing - no wonder he is crying.

Grotbags42 · 15/12/2013 23:11

You seem to have made a lot of assumptions there. I never said he was shut away for 16 hours a day, 5 days a week.

I'm presuming your not a fan of crating animals and took and instant dislike to my post. Thanks for your help

Our dog is in his 2/3 hours max daytime and sleeps in bed with us at night...I'm soft.

furbaby · 15/12/2013 23:13

How do you know that he, s ok in his crate for the 8 hours each day that your not there ?
He could be upset for 8 hours and you wouldn't know as your not there .
I understand its hard being a dog owner and working but christ he has the life of a battery chicken .
:( :( :(

daisydotandgertie · 15/12/2013 23:14

Jesus.

I've read some stuff on here but this takes the biscuit.

Your dog is not crate trained. It is shut into a crate for 8 hours a day and then again at night? That's not what a crate is for.

And you're wondering why it's crying.

It is not good enough to say it's out of the crate at the weekend so it's all fine. It isn't. And to get aggressive with people on here? FFS.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 15/12/2013 23:15

Even 8 hours is too long to leave a dog unattended in a crate IMO.

Are you serious beertricks? You've wound yourself up over nothing. I never said he was shut away for 16 hours everyday. Because he isn't. I'm not defending my decision to crate him

OP posts:
yesyestisme · 15/12/2013 23:18

What if he needs to wee/poo? 8 hours is a long time to wait

furbaby · 15/12/2013 23:18

Op if you are saying you never said he was shut away 16 hours a day 5 days a week .... do the maths 8 hours while you work plus bedtime means at least 16 hours a day .

Grotbags42 · 15/12/2013 23:20

And I'm not being aggressive Im being defensive. The days we work - He gets let out during the day and then is back in his crate for the afternoon

IComeFromALandDownUnder · 15/12/2013 23:20

Please god re home your dog. Crating a dog for so long is cruel. He has no stimulation, no where to go to the toilet or exercise for the majority of the day. Why don't you give him the run of the house while you are at work? Why did you get a dog?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 15/12/2013 23:22

You said he's in a crate for eight hours while you're at work and then eight hours at night. The assumption is that you work every week day, is that right?

MothershipG · 15/12/2013 23:22

Is he cold?

it really isn't ok to shut a dog in a crate for 8 hours 5 days a week.

Grotbags42 · 15/12/2013 23:24

Did I say 8 hours at night??
I didn't specify, only that he went back in at night

OP posts:
Grotbags42 · 15/12/2013 23:24

And I also didn't say 5 days a week either
