I think we may lose one of our darling dogs sooner than we thought....

He has recently recovered from having his ear bitten off. He has had an odd gait forever, but now his legs are not co-ordinating and his movement seems to get worse every day. He is very cheerful and does not seem in the mood to die quite yet. It is very sad to see my old man staggering about like a drunk and the realisation that he is probably not long for this world. The vet thinks he may be with us possibly for another month.

Oh dear, poor old chap.

Gileswithachainsaw · 13/12/2013 15:39

Aw that's really really sad to hear :(

This is where you go out and buy him all his favourite treats and spoil him rotten. Even let him sleep on your bed. !!

I hope his last weeks are filled with love and that there is no suffering xx

Thanks
EasyToEatTiger · 13/12/2013 15:42

I may have to move downstairs as the vet said he shouldn't climb the stairs as he'll probably fall down. He usually sleeps in my side of the bed. He can just about struggle up. We think he's nearly 14. Oh to see his 14th birthday. I expect he won't quite make it.

Oh 14 is a fab age he's clearly been loved and looked after.

This is the hardest part of having pets :( you are lucky to have found each other. What breed is he x

needastrongone · 13/12/2013 16:58

Oh I am so sorry about the incident which led to his ear being bitten off, and sorry that you feel the time is near. No words of comfort, I can't imagine being in your position, but you have my sympathy.

EasyToEatTiger · 13/12/2013 17:19

Thank you. He started life at a puppy farm, then a pet shop then he went to a family as a screwed up young thing, then he spent a good 6 months in Battersea, then it was love at first sight with our older dog. We spent the first 6 months really wondering what this nut dog was. He had no idea really about being a dog. He was dreadfully unbalanced. So sad to see him unbalanced but in a different way. I have seen broken snails about the place and wonder if he may have eaten one. I think they can be very poisonous for dogs....

I would love to see a picture if you could out one up. X

He is a lucky dog to have found his forever home. I'm sure you have given him such a happy life. Poor littl farm puppy :(

EasyToEatTiger · 13/12/2013 17:44

This is one, a few years ago when his sight was beginning to fail. www.vickywest.co.uk/gallery/paintings/Boris-Ball.html He didn't catch the ball. This painting luckily hasn't been sold.

I meant to link it properly. www.vickywest.co.uk/gallery/paintings/Boris-Ball.html

He's ace, our Springer is black and white too, and loves balls! Smile

Owllady · 13/12/2013 17:50

He sounds lovely :) it's very hard to lose a dog before you envisaged but I do think it's right to do what is best for them, rather than for ourselves xxx x

Gileswithachainsaw · 13/12/2013 17:53

Aw. Looks like he is a playful dog. I just laughed in sorry, at the thought of him being that close to catching the ball then missing completely. I have a soft spot for the more daft, useless nutty animals. They bring so much joy and laughter. had a cat that couldn't catch a cold

X

EasyToEatTiger · 13/12/2013 18:55

He used to be the master of tennis ball finding. He found about 200 tennis balls in his prime!!

Bet that drove you crazy.

EasyToEatTiger · 13/12/2013 20:22

We went to places where dogs weren't allowed!!!

Gileswithachainsaw · 13/12/2013 20:36

Sounds like you have a lot of funny and happy memories :)

thezoo · 14/12/2013 08:23

How long ago did he loose the ear?
Have you had the vet check for an ear infection?
If his co-ordination has gone there is a possibility but as you say he is an older gent aswell x

EasyToEatTiger · 14/12/2013 08:45

He was at the vets, ear in bag, within an hour of having had it bitten off. He was on painkillers and antibiotics pretty much immediately, poor thing. The other dog has been muzzled since as he would otherwise kill the oldie. The ear is well healed, just rather mis-shapen. He's still got beans in him today and I think we should take him for a nice walk while he's still able.

:) that sounds lovely. Such a brave dog!!

Enjoy your walk tigerdog

EasyToEatTiger · 14/12/2013 13:00

We've been out for a lovely walk. Feeling v sad that d dog is sooo wobbly. His mind is willing but his body is trailing behind.

OP posts:
EasyToEatTiger · 16/12/2013 18:19

The vet came about half an hour ago and put him down. Today he came out for a walk and did all his usual stuff. He started staggering about late in the afternoon and collapsed. Darling, darling dog.

OP posts:
Gileswithachainsaw · 16/12/2013 18:25

:( so very sorry.

But so glad his last day consisted of a walk and playing and being loved and happy. If there's a way to go, it's that.

Sweet dreams tigerdog you sound a special friend. Xxx

I'm so sorry for the loss of your great companion!

EasyToEatTiger · 16/12/2013 18:49

It has happened so quickly. The dcs are devastated. The whole family was at home when the vet came. There is an air of gloom in the house at the moment. The other dogs are silent.

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/12/2013 18:52

:(

Your poor dc. Do they understand it was for the best?

He was a very lucky dog to have you all x
