Pup ate something on our walk this morning and is now in the vets on a drip

Got back from our morning walk (woods and fields) and all seemed fine. About an hour later, the pup started vomiting. He walked around the garden retching and puking for fifteen minutes. The vet wanted to see him, so took him straight there. He vomited again in the waiting room, which was handy because the vet could see the contents. He thinks he's eaten a mushroom of some kind. Hi gums are pale and he was wheezing a bit on the exhalation as well as shivering and with a very 'sad' body shape. Vet has kept him in on a drip and is doing liver and kidney function bloods, but there isn't anything else to be done but wait. Going mad here waiting for the phone to ring.

I hope you get some good news soon.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/11/2013 13:57

Oh snakey how awful :(

I hope your puppy is ok

Tygra · 26/11/2013 13:58

Sorry to hear about your poor puppy. I have black lab pup and he eats EVERYTHING! I've caught him eating mushrooms before but he has always been fine thank god. Let us know how he is and if vet finds out what the cause of it is.

Praying your dog is okay. We lost our dog last week due to kidney failure but this was genetic and was told by vet initially if it was something she ate it is usually treatable. Best wishes.

You did the right thing by getting to vet immediately. Thinking of you. I hate waiting for THAT phone call from the vet. Keep us posted. x

What area are you in ? Check the Seasonal Canine Illness page on the animal health trust website.

I'm in south Derbyshire, Lonecat. Vet just called to say that he hasn't vomited for a while now and is sleeping while the drip does its thing. He's not showing any worse symptoms, which is a good sign. It's a tiny little patch of woodland we walk through to get to the dog field, 1/3 of a mile at the most. I didn't see him eat anything, and the spaniel is fine (thank God). Scary how quickly he got poorly :(

It is the woodland that triggered it for me, it could be worth your vet phoning the AHT if they think it could be SCI they will run blood samples for free.

Owllady · 26/11/2013 14:55

One of mine took I'll like this on a walk once and it was actually acute gastritis, she stayed in vet hospital on a drip for a few days and was fine
Hopefully your dog will be too, but it's just so sudden and you feel helpless x

SnakeyMcBadass · 26/11/2013 19:06

Well, he's home :) He's exhausted and doesn't want to eat, but is back where he belongs. Thanks for the hand holding.

Poor puppy. Hope you all get some rest.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/11/2013 19:13

Aw glad he's home!!!

bellasuewow · 26/11/2013 22:27

Mine ate something on the beach puked and poohed vets drama drama but absolutely fine after a few injections and a bit of rest oh yes and a huge bill....

Tygra · 27/11/2013 12:29

So glad he is ok, did vet know what it was in the end?

SnakeyMcBadass · 27/11/2013 13:24

Not entirely sure, Tygra. They were working on the assumption that it was a toadstool as they thought they detected something mushroomy in his vomit. He's very lethargic today, and only nibbling at his food. No more sickness, thankfully

Hopefully he will be ok as he vomited it all up. Mine was eating acorns, mouldy apples etc this morning. I spend most of the walk chasing him and getting stuff out of his mouth. There are massive mushrooms in our local park and I've caught him eating them and they grow in the garden so I try and pick as many as I can but I've still caught him eating those too. The world is a minefield of dangerous stuff!
