New thread, because quite frankly I can't do without you all :)

Mine is a border collie and so are my sisters two and yes they do put Finn in his place (a figure of speech i think) but I know he was well socialised with other dogs before he left the breeder so he does understand 'dog'. He doesn't get scared but you can see him processing it and thinking 'ok perhaps that nip was a bit too hard' He rolls over and wiggles a bit and then play resumes.

happygolucky0 · 17/11/2013 20:27

Thanks jammiedodger. I am feeling better than yesterday. Had some help today which makes it much easier to keep up with her.

NCISaddict · 17/11/2013 20:32

Not sure if I'd be enjoying my pup as much if I didn't have DD around to help. At least we can take turns getting up in the morning with him. Thanks to those doing it on their own or with little DC's

InTheRedCorner · 17/11/2013 21:40

We had a great first night which is a relief and when I came down to get a drink at 6.30am I just made a point of not giving her eye contact and then let her out of her cage at 7.30 and straight outside.

Is it normal to cage over night? She came to us cage trained and 6 months old and I assumed we would let her have downstairs during the evening?

I'm tempted to give her the(large) kitchen tonight and see how she goes?

I'm on edge with all these decisions!!

NCISaddict · 17/11/2013 21:44

I've crated every night and when I go out. Finn seems happy in there and has slept without accidents every night, he now goes in there during the day of his own accord so I presume he sees it as a safe haven, he certainly decamps there if I hoover which he doesn't like it.

InTheRedCorner · 17/11/2013 22:35

Roxie never goes in there of her own accord, I treat her to get her in although dshe has only been here since yesterday so maybe I'm pushing it.

We are out of the house for school hours during the week so I was wondering if 7 hours in the day and then 7 hours at night was too much time in there? She seems fine and we have had no problems with her at all DH would disagree due to accidental wee and general puppy behaviour I just wonder if the run of the kitchen would be best so she can have a wander?

We have just been outside togeather and someone closed a car door and she gave a big bark, first time I have heard her bark! Smile

couch25cakes · 17/11/2013 23:22

Archie is in a crate at night for now, last night was his second with us and he didn't make a sound. I came down at 6.30 and all was good. I'm hoping to stretch that to about 7 over the next weeks. he's been pretty chilled, we've not had any barking yet. He seems to be trying to jockey for position with dd (10) with a lot of play fighting and teeth, and a bit of leg humping. But she's been pretty good about putting him down and giving him a strong 'no' whenever he does it, so hopefully he'll get the message soon. I must admit I'm exhausted tonight after constantly hovering since Friday night, so DH is doing bedtime. He's home with Archie tomorrow, he has his first vet check first thing then I'm going into work for a rest!

NCISaddict · 18/11/2013 06:51

Seven hours is a very long time to leave a puppy during the day and I would think will make house training very difficult.

I wouldn't leave Finn in his crate for that length of time during the day, he's only left for a maximum of 2 hours during the day and that's rare, there's normally one of us coming home so he's only in there for the crossover between one leaving and the other getting home.

DharmaLovesDraco · 18/11/2013 07:44

Hi all and welcome to all the new puppies!!

I agree 7 hours during the day is an awfully long time for a puppy to be left, O is left for 3 hours max at 17 weeks of age (and I think this is stretching it) as I work 3 days a week and this is the approx time between me leaving and the dog walker coming in.

We had a lovely socialisation walk to the bust park, he was a star! Might take him to Costa this afternoon as long as the rain stays away

Morning Everyone,
The crate thing was a big problem for us to decide what to do, she was brought up with a cage, but I was worried about locking the door in the first few nights as she had come from a big litter and was used to company,
we have settled on putting her in the cage but leaving the door open and she happily goes in for sleeps and to escape the dc so it works well for us not shutting the door, but we are lucky as the kitchen has tiled floors so she can roam in there as she pleases, we haven't had an accident for about a week now, and she is going to the back door when she wants to go out.
I have a puppy pad in case she needs it and it seems to work,
enjoy your day everyone!

happygolucky0 · 18/11/2013 11:05

Intheredcorner if the pup is happy in the crate at night then personally I wouldn't change it. I Crated mine for weeks then she started to moan about it so let her out.
Last night I put her back again! She is clean in the crate. She won't mess in there but will happily mess the hallway carpet. If it isn't broke dont fix it. !!

TooManyButtons · 18/11/2013 20:28

couch25cakes you don't happen to live in South Yorkshire do you? Only I saw a puppy today who could definitely have been a bichon/schnauzer cross wearing a collar that said Archie on it Smile

TooManyButtons · 18/11/2013 20:30

I popped to pets at home today and saw a family proudly carrying their tiny cocker spaniel puppy round in a blanket - then I came home to my huge, bouncy 5 month old - I'm puppy broody already. Someone tell me to get a grip!

couch25cakes · 18/11/2013 21:14

Too Many, no we're in London :)
Archie had his first vet visit today; he was shaking like a leaf when we arrived bless him but within a few minutes was laid out on the vets table without a care. Vet is happy that he's healthy thank goodness, we need to keep an eye on his bichon ears as there is too much hair in there and they run the risk of being infected.
Work was a nice break but as soon as I finished I was desperate to get home. It's my turn to stay home tomorrow :)

basildonbond · 18/11/2013 21:14

Welcome to all the new puppies and toomanybuttons - get a grip Grin

I slightly overdid it with Fitz this morning - we went out with a friend and her dog and went further than I'd meant to. On the way back to the car his eyes looked soooo tired and he's been either sparko or horribly wired ever since....

Intheredcorner - I think you're going to have to work out another arrangement during the week - 7 hours is way too long to leave a puppy alone during the day. Can't you get a dog-walker/dog-sitter to come in to break up the day if one of you can't be there? I just think you'll be storing up all kinds of problems for the future plus having a bored, miserable pup right now

mintchocchick · 18/11/2013 22:14

Lots of new puppies and I too am feeling puppy broody! Just saw pics of minty at 8 weeks and he looked so adorable, fluffy and clean and he's now a huge, bumbling muddy thing!

Moose - and others who we're chatting about pigs ears - remember we were speculating about their making dogs hyper! Well during our home visit from the dog trainer, the aim of which was to help us help minty to settle and give lots of good behaviours - third thing dog trainer asked was were we giving him pigs ears? They do not recommend them as they make dogs hyper and difficult to control. When I explained about the journey we'd been on regarding pigs ears and working that out the hard way for ourselves she said that was brilliant, we were obviously tuning into him and building up good knowledge of him.

Instead she said rawhide bone was ok or antlers were the best. So I proudly produced my antler (thanks Moose)!

We have been using an antler or bone every night only for the hour that we want to watch TV then it goes away and he is settling by our feet beautifully. I am back bonded again after a few rocky weeks of feeling like I wasn't coping.

SallyBear · 18/11/2013 23:46

Toby seems to have gone off puppy crack cocaine pigs ears. Tried the Fish for dogs and even though he loved them, the smell!!!! Ugh.

couch25cakes · 19/11/2013 06:43

I need to figure out if there's a way for Archie to get into a better eat/poo routine. We seem to be standing in the garden for ages. Sunday night he did nothing all evening and then deposited a huge one on the floor, and yesterday he didn't do one all afternoon/evening, did one before bed and I've found another monster in his crate this morning. I know it's early days but any tips from those of you further along please?

On the positive, he's going into his crate without a fuss and remains so even tempered and cheerful. Evenings he settles down near us and snoozes while we relax.

mintchocchick · 19/11/2013 13:03

Can you take him out yet Couch?

I find that walking round the block in the evening really helps gets things moving! It could just be that he's too young to hang on for long or to go on demand.

couch25cakes · 19/11/2013 14:06

Mint, no not for two more weeks. He's 12 weeks and seems to have reasonable bladder control (hasn't peed in the house at all today), but doesn't seem to poo after eating like all the books say he will. Ate lunch at 11.45 and as yet seems to have no inclination for a poo, which may make it officially when I go back to work 12.30-3 next week. But maybe he'll get himself into more of a routine when we do.

JammyDodger1 · 19/11/2013 16:12

Poor Belle had her first taste of frost this morning! I feel she is going to be a fair weather puppy, poor love was trying to poo and wee in her tip toes, bless!

Any tips on jumping up? Not just at people but the cooker, cupboards and basically anything she can! I am saying get down firmly but it is falling on deaf ears.

couch25cakes · 19/11/2013 17:01

Well Archie and I had a really chilled day at home with no accidents. He still hadn't 'been' by 2.45 so he went in his crate in the car to collect dd from school, a ten minute drive away. He pooed on the mat in the crate and then trampled it everywhere, it was in the mesh windows, in between his toes and all over the inside of the crate. Fun times :)

JammyDodger1 · 19/11/2013 17:33

eeww, it's like having a toddler again isn't it!

needastrongone · 19/11/2013 18:06

Looks like I am joining you guys from January as we have just agreed to a GSP from January.

Not too distant memories though, our first dog, a Springer, has just turned one.

See, I am doing it again, it can't be that bad!

needastrongone · 19/11/2013 18:08

Ps. This is a Christmas present for DH, who has found dog ownership simply a joy. It took longer for me to adjust, but I adore our Springer, so a pointer will be a nice addition.

Hopefully, I am not too far out of puppyhood to not provide some experiences to give you all hope!!
