My dog ate about half a packet of butter this morning. She sicked up her breakfast with a load of butter this morning and then nothing else. I had to go out at half 2, came back about 6 and there was one lot of normal sick, one lot of pinky water and one lot of foamy bile with some actual blood in it. She really doesn't cope well with being left alone so I don't know if she's been anxious and winding herself up, then retching which has caused the blood or whether I have something to worry about? she has obviously eaten a little bit of the butter packet but there was some in the normal sick I cleared up, so I think that must be nearly all of it by now? she seems perfectly ok in herself, she's not listless or lethargic, she hasn't retched or been sick since I got in - should I call the OOH vet or just see how she gets on?

Butter is highly dangerous to dogs, call vet for advice and don't be surprised if they want you to go in.

Our dog ate the whole pack of butter; and was sick as a dog; and we called him 'butter breath' for a week after. But he was fine, as that was over 5 years ago. I had no idea that it was dangerous - if he's sicked it all up, should be fine. I would starve him for 24 hours and see how it goes (much cheaper than going to the vets)

thanks guys i rang the vets and the nurse said she wasnt aware of butter being dangerous, i said i will keep an eye on the dog and see if shes sick again, she hasnt been so far. shes not an active dog anyway so its sort of hard to tell if shes lethargic!

Is it? Highly dangerous? I've never heard that and I'm a vet nurse... Maybe if fed daily might lead to pancreatitis or something? I'm always willing to learn something new though!

I would imagine the high fat content won't do the dog many favours - hence the vomiting, I would say if she is sick again, even once more then call your vet. Otherwise, give her tummy a rest tonight and try bland food in the morning, so long as no more vomiting. Boiled chicken and rice, or a tinned food from your vet. Little and often throughout the day. If she wants to drink tonight, then again, little and often rather than letting her guzzle it - she may be feeling dehydrated from the vomiting, so may want to drink a lot.
Any signs of abdo pain, lethargy, vomiting, blood in the faeces (she will probably have diarrhoea) then call your vet.

Hmm

been wondering about my vets for a while, they have my dog an anti sickness jab after her Flora adventure. Told me it was good she only ate marge as "butter is highly dangerous due to the fat content".

Think I may change vets (based on few other niggles) feel like I may have been taken for a ride!

Glad your dog is ok Op and my apologies if I worried you Flowers

I suppose if she were showing signs of nausea or was vomiting then they were treating symptomatically TooTaboo?
Personally I would think, like I said above that it isn't something that should be fed daily, or regularly even, because of the high fat content, but as a one off? I suppose it could lead to a case of pancreatitis? Needs a vet really:)

They may well know something I don't though!

My dog ate two packs of butter I had on the worktop, I rang the vets and he said it was ok just be prepared for him to have stomach ache and the runs.

saintmerryweather · 07/11/2013 23:08

not at all tootaboo, your post is what made me ring the vets and the nurse put my mind at rest along with the other posts here. you can only go by what you've been told!

dog was fine, no more signs of illness at all, so quite lucky really!

Any high fat for when eaten in large quantities can cause acute pancreatitis which is extremely serious and can lead to death. Stealing butter or fatty spreads is a classic scenario for it so I suspect this is the reason for concern.

Glad she's feeling better OP :)
