Nearly 10 year old Jack Russell has a lump on his chest

Hi

I have a Jack Russell that I inherited from my ExH. About a month ago I found a lump on his chest so took him to the vet who said it was more than likely a fatty lump. She also had that he is developing a cataracts in one eye and has the start of a heart murmur. She wants me to take him back in a couple of months to see if any of it has progressed.

The problem is that tonight I have felt a second lump about an inch away from the first, could this also be a fatty lump or something more serious?

We can do a test called a fine needle aspirated where a needle and syringe is used in a regular consult to take a few cells that the lab can look at and give you a definite answer as to what the lumps are. The fast majority are nothing to worry about.

When I found the first I wasn't too worried but finding the second one and it coming up so quickly is more of a concern. Should I take him back now or wait the couple of months that the vet suggested?

Sorry I problem sound a bit strange but I have never had a do before.

If the dog lets you, without putting yourself in danger of a bite as it may hurt him, try to move the lump a little
if it moves with the skin, isn't attached to the muscle/organ then it is most likely a fatty lump
if it doesn't move then you need another vet visit and insist on a biopsy

I would disagree with you Charlie there are a whole multitude of nasty lumps that move under the skin. The best way to know is a fine needle aspirated - I would always do this on my own pet.

We discovered a lump on the back leg of our 10 yr old labrador & took her to the vet on Friday. They took a sample of the lump with a needle - it only took 5 mins - and they will look at this under a microscope on Monday. Initial observations suggest that the fluid was from a fatty lump, but we will know for sure either way tomorrow. Her lump is fixed in the muscle layer & is the only lump that we have noticed on her.

I do recommend you take your JRT back to your vet for this very simple test. It is inexpensive and then you will know for sure whether it is something to worry about or not.

Also, apparantly it is common to have more than one fatty lump!

We have a seriously lumpy black lab (age 9). We get all her lumps checked as soon as we find them. So far so good.

He is quite happy to let me touch it and it doesn't appear to hurt. It feels like it isn't attached and moves quite easily.

I will try and take him to the vet some time this week to check.
