how do I teach him to not bark at everyone walking near us (even the people on the otherside of the road!) if there is another dog he will bark constantly.
aside from being mighty embarrassing, im getting evil looks off everyone and it makes him look like an aggressive dog.
he would literally lick them to death if he was close enough though, so I don't think its him showing aggression.
I always say 'no' in a tough voice and pull him along to carry on walking.
anyone had this with their doggie? any advice?

Yes agree it's very embarrassing, my rescue GSD was like this when we got him 2 months ago. We had one nasty incident when my dog growled and frightened another dog. Owner couldn't hang on to the lead and her dog ran into the road, luckily cars were going slowly and stopped in time.
He still does it occasionally but getting better.
He's always been fine off lead, ignores people and greets other dogs politely, but can sound like a really vicious dog when on lead. I try to anticipate problems and always have a distraction ready - squeaky ball or new toy to get his attention off the other dog or person. Food treats don't do it for him but may work for your dog. Sometimes we just turn round and walk the other way before we get close enough to set the barking off. I think he's getting better because he's got to know most of the local people and dogs.

Quickest way to stop a dog barking - assuming you're right and it's friendly/excitable barking - is to teach them to bark on cue, then teach them 'quiet' as a paired cue.

I'm sure there are better, but don't have time to search for one just at the moment. Sorry.

Check outKikopup's youtube videos and videos on her website Dogmantics as well, as she does have videos for controlling barking, but ideally you need to watch the series.
