Guess the breed of our puppy....

So Luna is now 15 weeks old, typical puppy, responds well to training, pretty much housetrained even at night. She chews everything in sight of course and eats well. She is the centre of our family, a real character, daft as a brush and funny but pretty cute and cuddly too.

We had her DNA tested a couple of weeks ago and the results are just through. They tell you most importantly whether she has a genetic predisposition to any medical conditions (she doesn't thankfully), and how big she should grow (around 50 - 60 lbs).

It also tells you the breeds that make her up. She is a real jumble of breeds as we thought she would be but she is 25% one breed and 25% another breed (ie 2 of her grandparents were pure bred). Her photos are on my profile - can you guess the two breeds?

Well .. She's very cute and I'm assuming there's Labrador, Dalmatian, spaniel and jack Russell somewhere in there - anything else?

50-60lb is a medium sized dog - my large collie is about that.

I'm guessing Dalmatian from the spots and jack Russell?

Tell me more about the DNA testing - sounds intriguing I would love to know more about my rescue dog's background!

I would guess Jack Russell and Dalmatian looking at the colouring and ears.

I saw DNA testing on the bbc dog programme, was quite interesting. One man thought he'd bought a cockerpoo but the dog was actually a springer spaniel x poodle rather than cocker spaniel x poodle.

Lab and Dalmatian. Although I think the spots may be a red herring and it's something random like Great Dane and Rough Collie .

She is gorgeous! I'm going with dalmatian and collie.

I'd also love to know more about the test. We have two rescue collie types (one around the same age as your pup) and I would be fascinated to find out what else is in there!

I think Dane, she has Collie eyes though. It's her chest and front stature that's got me confuzzled.

Wow, lots of good guesses but only one of them had one of her breeds. The shelter told us Dalmatian x lab .... But it turns out she's not Dalmatian at all, not even the jumble of breeds that make up her other 50%. Her two main breeds are American staffie and Rhodesian ridgeback!!! I can see ridgeback in her face and ears and I guess staffie too but I've never seen spots like that on a staffie... We guessed Dalmatian, jack Russell etc like you all did.

We are in the USA and it's pretty common here to test, costs about gbp 100 but we wanted to know about hereditary conditions and thought it was worth it for that too.

Have never heard of American Staffordshire Terriers . Did you mean American Pit Bull or am I just behind the times?

That's really interesting, I wish it was more common to DNA test doggies over here. I would have said she had collie and lab in her, no way could I see the staffy! The ridgeback is noticeable once you look though. She's a beauty.
LazyGaga, American staffies are built a bit different from the ones in the uk, as are Irish staffies. All gorgeous though.

Well, for those in the UK I've just googled the DNA kit - costs £45. I'm tempted! Anyone going to take the plunge?

Amazon had the DNA test kits in their Black Friday sales last year, I am tempted to buy one this year if they come up again.

Ooh, tempted to get that as a present for my DM and StepD's dog, they've had her 10 years and the staff at WoodGreen described her simply as mixed breed! DM is 'convinced' she's half fox , it would be interesting to get some idea of her heritage.

Yes, American staffie is a large british staffie. Funnily enough, when our dog barks, all the fur along her spine stands up, wonder if that's the ridgeback contribution!

She is a fab dog though and a real testament to shelter adoptions everywhere.

Mogz, my mil has a jackadoodle (jack Russell x poodle) that looks just like like a fox, is this a possibility?

Ah I see mogz and butterflies - similar to how American Golden Retrievers are different to English type (don't flame me for saying 'English', that's the way in which they're usually referred!).

I don't think so butterflies, she's quite a tall dog, it's her colour (although the older she gets the more black and deep brown hair she gets along her back) and brushy tail that makes her look a bit foxy. But I think she's got lab, dobie, and greyhound in her at the very least.

The DNA kits are great, we used one last year for our staffie cross, she came back half stb, quarter American staff and quarter mixed breed.
