Dog Eye Bogies

Sorry about the thread title, but that's what we call them. Ahem.

Is it normal to have to wipe eye bogies from a dog's eyes a few times a day? My spaniel always seems to have one or two hanging from his tear ducts. His eyes don't seem irritated, and he is fine in himself. The pup has very curly hair, and his eye bogies become welded to the inner corners of his eyes. I have to soak and pull to get them out. I've become quite obsessive about making sure their eyes are clean.

Yup. Grin

If it is just normal sticky and no sign of soreness or infection. If it is copious then I would make sure eyes are double checked for distichiasis and other eyelid/eyelash probs as can be quite common in Spanners. This can be mild enough to just cause watery eyes but can lead to ulcers and horrible sore stuff.
Can also be a sign of dry eye. Sudden increases can be due to a foreign body or problem in the nose as well.
But if eyes are nice and healthy then it's usually just indicative of the amount of crap they find from sticking their heads everywhere and walking with a nose permanently attached to the ground. Some can get really sticky eyes due to hayfever too.
Mine get really gunky eyes in the morning in the summer if I don't quickly bathe their eyes after a walk the night before. Come autumn/winter when everything is wet and dampend down, no more problem.
What with eye bogeys, lip fold maintenance and grass seeds I have been tempted to wax the buggers on more than one occasion. It's horse shit in the ears at the moment Envy

Oh forgot, make sure his face is groomed nice and short. Whiffly bits around the bridge of the nose or long eyelashes/brows can poke them in the eyes and cause probs.
A stray curl could be pokey.

How on earth do you (the dog!) get horse poo in your ears?

I love getting rid of dog eye bogies.

My staff always has snotty eyes, she kindly wipes them on anyones trousers, I see it as a term of endearment :)
