My golden retriever was castrated on Friday. Was bad Saturday so we Went to vets Sunday who said he had licked wound as cone to small, gave a bigger cone, cream for soreness and antibiotics. Asked to see him again tonight. We saw a different vet and I just really need some reassurance as I'm not convinced by what he said. Dog has not passed stool since sat a.m, is lethargic, is drinking but only when bowl is bought to his lips. He is eaten but not with his usual vigor. Never had a dog before this and we are just so worried. Vet said if not pood by end of week to go back!!!! That will be a week?

Have you got pain killers for him like metacam ? We had our dog 'done' at 10 months and he was back to his usual bouncy self the next day so perhaps its worse if they're a bit older or maybe the anaesthetic didnt agree with him . Hope he feels better tomorrow

Ring the OOH vet tonight and talk to them. They'll tell you if anything needs to be done. Did he have a temperature on Sunday? Are you able to take his temperature tonight?

I'd be worried about a dog of mine if it had all the symptoms you describe and would be on the phone to OOH straight away.

I think I'd want advice now too. Admittedly mine was only 7 months but he was whimpery on op day then sleepy the next morning after a dose of metacam but after that was back to normal. He was probably worse as was bouncing off the ceiling on 20 min lead walks.

Ask to speak to another vet.

See another vet. Our goldie was exactly the same age as yours, no problems whatsoever like the ones you're describing. We gave him painkillers but he only needed them the day after the surgery. I really hope your boy is ok.

You need to go and see another vet, my dog was castrated when he was 2 he was feeling sorry for himself that day and for a couple of hours the next and was then back to his usual self.

SnakeyMcBadass · 02/10/2013 13:47

How is he now?

Stoney666 · 02/10/2013 20:24

ThNks for replies. Rang mine and one other vet and both said it Normal!!!!! he is on metacalm, and I think we may stop it from now after reading up on it. He did pass a large stool today and has done 1 wee. I have taken the collar off when we are with him. He greeted Dh tonight which is first time since. Praying we are over worst of it, I have been beside myself ??
