Anyone else have a greedy scavenger?

I have a greyhound girl who sniffs out food on walks, goes into bushes looking for rubbish, runs off to where she knows people scatter breadcrumbs for the birds, etc. She used to have a quick sniff then run to me but now she won't come when called but will continue eating or sniffing. She is meant to be a sight hound but I'm pretty sure she thinks she's a sniffer dog!

I am thinking I need to take out some high value treats and start from scratch with her recall? She was walking perfectly alongside me but the past few days she has been like a naughty child! Hmm

Definitely do some work on the recall, but also do some 'leave it' work, as it makes it much easier to call them off whatever disgusting article they've managed to unearth and start scoffing.

The Kikopup videos on 'leave' are very good and employ the methods I've used with all my dogs:

Thanks moosemama will check that out. She is usually good with leave it. At the weekend I dropped my pitta bread stuffed with chicken on the floor about 3 inches from her nose and as she saw it I said leave it and and she just laid there looking at me.

When we are outdoors though she seems to go into scavenger mode so I do need to work on it outside the house too. Smile

I second the leave it our new dog isn't that bad he likes paper and socks though Confused and he wil leave it when i yell tell him

our last dog was a terrible scavenger we got her from a rescue as a puppy but was always into something, she was always getting ill and she did die quite young from a stomach thing probably as a result of raking , I dont mean to be dramatic about it or upset you but do try and get your dog to leave it ,
