Just thought I'd start the new thread!

Toby (foxy coloured yellow Labrador) is now 13 weeks old. Long, lean and lanky. Still wonderfully tempered and is sleeping through and no longer messing in the house.

Same here picnic, the van is always really cool, even in summer. Unfortunately, we are trying to sell it at the moment, so it may not be an option for much longer. Hmm

Sorry to hear Legend didn't cope well with your family visiting. Have you managed to get a vet appointment for a behavioural referral yet? (Apologies if you've already said upthread - I'm very tired and haven't read back.)

picnicinthewoods · 05/11/2013 08:54

yes vet appointment is for Friday, tbh, it cannot come soon enough:(

Separate issue, since yesterday Legend has had some diarrhea and has been straining when trying to go - any ideas? He's been having his normal food, treats are just chicken as he doesn't seem to tolerate much else so I keep it simple. Should I do a day or two of chicken & rice, see if that helps?

haggisaggis · 05/11/2013 12:01

Angus is now 11 weeks. He is going through teh night now without needing taking out - and for past two nights has been sleeping on his bed in our bedroom adn not in his box. Toilet training through the day is a bit hit and miss - he's fine when I'm downstairs with him as the door is clsoe by and he seems to make gteh connection - but our living room is ustairs and he can't manage teh stairs yet - so just uses the floor of ds's bathroom. Not quite sure what to do there yet other than take him out frequently. I had to take him to work with me yesterday and he was a star - slept beside me and then had some good playtimes with my work colleagues.
Sadly one of my cats died at teh weekend - found him lying on teh floor. He hadn't been eating and was due to have blood tests. He was the one that tolerated teh dog fairly well - the other one (MAine Coon) is getting better but still tends to start growling if Angus gets too close. I miss the other cat very much - he was a rescue and loved cuddles (and chicken!)

sweetkitty · 05/11/2013 12:16

Just trying to catch up, Nala is almost 16 weeks now, the jumping and biting is slowly getting better although she nipped DS in the face this morning, she was having her dinner and I dashed upstairs for a pair of socks and don't know what happened Hmm

She's getting really good at toilet training although we had a poo in her crate this morning but that was probably me I thought she was just barking at the cat and stayed in bed.

Am struggling to find time for training her must try harder Hmm

happygolucky0 · 05/11/2013 17:23

Maybe you could be almost there with the leaving him Moose as that was how Jess was. Fine with being left in the car but barking and stressing when left at home.
I tried to leave her in the kitchen ... She went crazy over it. Then having the run of the hallway but a door shut .... Wasn't having it. She has finally settled having the run of the place apart from the bedrooms. As long as she can be by the front door she seems fine. We got one of the plug ins from Pets at home. Only leave her for two or three hours.
I had to change my shifts at work. The mornings wasn't going well with leaving her. I find it better to beable to wear her out before she us left so she is ready to sleep.

It is very hard though as you know! and really frustrating and stressfull at times worrying if it would get better. Jess is proof that it can so hang in there hopefully it will click in soon with pip.

moosemama · 05/11/2013 17:31

Thanks happy.

He's been fine for both school runs today. One was only 20 minutes but the other was closer to 40 and he was still stuffing his face when I got back and didn't even bother looking up when I came in.

He's also slept in his crate for an hour this afternoon, despite the door being open and me being in the living room.

I also went out the living room door, out the front door and up the drive to collect the wheelie bin and ds2 said Pip didn't make a sound - so that's real progress too.

I think he just needs some consistency, which has been difficult with various illnesses and then the school holidays, but hopefully we can really get on top of things now everyone is back at school.

picnicinthewoods · 05/11/2013 19:10

That's great moosemama, really good to hear he's getting better with being left:)

moosemama · 05/11/2013 19:30

Just reading back, as I didn't have time earlier.

Picnic, how is Legend's stomach now? I don't think doing chicken and rice for a couple of days would do any harm, so maybe worth a try. If he's straining though, it might be worth calling your vet for advice.

Haggis, so sorry to hear of your about your cat. Sad

Sweetkitty, sorry to hear about the nip. It's scary how quickly things can go wrong. I had a similar reminder last week when Pip charged in from the garden and jumped up at dd. I have to keep reminding myself to make sure the gate is closed between the kitchen and living room.

SallyBear · 05/11/2013 19:37

Toby (lab) nipped DS3 this evening. He didn't mean to, but it shocked them both. DS3 and Toby are joined at the hip, so thankfully no damage or hard feelings.

How's everyone's bonfire night going? Lots of big bangs here but Fitz snoozing happily in his crate - thankfully he did a wee and poo just before all the local racket started as I suspect he wouldn't be able to concentrate now! Unfortunately our very vocal ex-street cat is very put out by the fireworks and keeps on coming into the kitchen and yowling which wakes Fitz up

Haggis - so sorry to hear about your cat, that must have been a shock for you :(

Picnic - I hope the vet comes up with some answers - it's been v stressful for you so far

Sweetkitty - Fitz nipped dd's face last week - it's easy to forget they're still babies and need to be watched constantly as they don't yet know how to behave

I have a puppy dilemma on Monday - I have to take my mum to a hospital appointment in the morning - it's likely to take an hour or so which would mean being out if the house for up to three hours which is right at the upper limit of how long I feel comfortable leaving him for and there's a possibility I might have to be out for longer if my mum has to go for more tests. So do I leave him on his crate at home or do I bring him with me and leave him in the crate in the car? I could pop out to him every now and then and take him for a quick walk round the block - he's usually happy in the car crate and tends to go to sleep. Presumably I wouldn't need to worry about him overheating?

moosemama · 05/11/2013 21:27

Really loud bangs here tonight and neither dog have even lifted an eyelid at it all. Grin

Basil, it is a dilemma isn't it. I have the same one, only for shorter periods of time. He would probably be ok in the car, but it really does depend on the weather, as if the sun shines directly on the car it can still heat up significantly, even in the middle of winter.

Is there no-one you could ask to come in and sit with him at home for half and hour in the middle?

SallyBear · 05/11/2013 22:08

BB if you leave Fitz in the car, don't forget to disable the internal sensor and alarm in the car.

Feels like I've been MIA for ages!

All ok here, O is that puppy at puppy classes too, luckily they think it's endearing denial. He is being a total pita between 6-7 at night, totally out of control, biting, jumping and humping and I can't do a bloody thing with him. Am loath to time out in the crate as it's still not his favourite place.

Walking is going ok, we do 2x15 minutes and he's a very good boy (until he sees another dog and reverts to pita again)

He was funny with the fire works though - asked to go outside for the toilet then sat and watched them for 15 minutes, utter loon Grin

Will try and catch up on the rest of the thread now

SallyBear · 06/11/2013 10:00

Dharma - Toby (lab) watches the tv! Loves football! Mad boy actually tracks the ball across the screen!

OP posts:
moosemama · 06/11/2013 10:17

Pip has a bit of a thing for watching the Smurfs on tv. Confused

SallyBear · 06/11/2013 10:34

They really are all like children!! Next they'll be playing Minecraft on the iPad!

OP posts:
haggisaggis · 06/11/2013 12:28

Had a crazy evening yesterday - put Angus in his playpen as we were going out to local fireworks display - but I let the kids put him in and didn't check. Came back to find tehy hadn't shut the pen door properly and he'd got out and pooed in dd's bathroom (then traipsed through it spreading it through the hall..) cleared that up then changed dd's bed as had washed bedding earlier - whereupon the cat (who was shut in) decided to pee on her bed as he couldn't get to his litter tray as dog was in teh way...fun and games in our house last night!

mintchocchick · 06/11/2013 13:37

That sounds busy haggis!

We have an awful manic phase just as DS2 goes to bed so from 8pm onwards. If we put him behind stairgate he barks so we have to be armed with antlers, toys, chews etc and even then it is far from restful as he is so hyper you never know whether he'll leap at a foot or knee instead of the toy! Tenderhooks till we go to bed when he sinks out and is snoring within minutes!

I have minty used to me disappearing upstairs to work for hour long chunks of time and he is fine with that in the mornings, afternoons he cries as he must be more awake and wanting attention then. So I don't get much work done and usually end up doing housework downstairs with him pottering along behind!

moosemama · 06/11/2013 13:58

Oh no! I don't think I could cope with yet another Minecraft addict in the house.

Haggis, sounds like a nightmare evening. Hope today is better.

Puppy class went well this morning. Pip stayed out in front of me the whole time, joined in with the training, did an off-lead recall and even approached a few puppies to say a tentative hello. Smile

He's exhausted now though. I've tucked him up in his crate like I do at bedtime and he didn't even bat an eyelid when dh went out - maybe all that door opening desensitisation is starting to pay off. Grin

basildonbond · 07/11/2013 09:50

We have had 24 hours accident-free!

Fitz is suddenly looking more like a little dog than a puppy (he's still gorgeous though :) )

moosemama · 07/11/2013 16:34

Pip has always looked more like a miniature Lurcher than a cute puppy. He's getting quite handsome now though, in a more mature way, iyswim.

We had an interesting (for want of a better word) walk today. First we were accosted by a Labrador that hurtled from one side of the park to the other to get to my two and arrived with all his hackles up, then proceeded to repeatedly pounce on Lurcherboy. Pip very sensibly put some distance between the two of them and watched as the daft thing tried to steal Lurcherboy's tennis ball - crime of the century that as far as Lurcherboy's concerned - and it got a good telling off for it's trouble. I engineered the walk so that we met up with the owner when all 3 were on lead a little later and they were all fine together and sat nicely while I spoke to the man who was walking him. Turned out he was walking it for his son and it's just under 1 year old, so typical bolshy Lab teenager. Apparently it normally ignores tennis balls, but of course ours was far more interesting, because it belonged to another dog.

Then we encountered the same black spaniel that we did a couple of weekends ago. The owner just walks the perimeter of the park and lets the dog do it's own thing. Pip barked at it last time and it did the same thing again today - bolted all the way from one side of the park to the other to reach us and this time the darned thing chased him right across the park. I tried the whistle, but he was too panicked to respond and started running headlong towards the carpark and road beyond. I was so worried he wasn't going to stop before the road. Started frantically yelling his name and that brought him back into his head, he stalled, changed direction and practically lurchered me coming back. Phew! Then he calmed down and went to say hello to the spaniel's owner (thank goodness I have been busy reinforcing no jumping up this week as she was very smartly turned out). She came to talk to me - I explained about Pip's history and that he's very worried by other dogs and she petted him and said hello. While we were talking the daft dog had clambered onto my knee as I was squatting and from there was quite happy to say hello to the spaniel.

I'm hoping the more controlled introductions will have gone at least some way towards offsetting the chaotic uncontrolled ones.

He's spark out in his crate now, exhausted from all the excitement.

LoreleisSecret · 08/11/2013 07:11

Coming late into this thread.
Beautiful 10 week old fawn pug puppy named Stanley, was expecting him to be up all night and he slept 8 hours straight Shock
God is finally being kind to me after 2 non sleeping children. Amen to that!

DharmaLovesDraco · 08/11/2013 11:24

Welcome to you both :) love the name too! This thread has saved my sanity on a regular basis I don't know how I'd have managed without it.

Quick question for everyone about collars. Puppy has outgrown his collar now and I need a new one. I want one that clips rather than buckles, fairly wide to avoid a cheese grater effect and preferably padded. Has anyone seen/got something similar? If so can you tell me what it is etc

Thanks xx

moosemama · 08/11/2013 12:39

Hi and welcome Loreleis Smile

Dharma, these fleece lined collars seem to be very popular with dogs that have sensitive necks.

I have their perfect fit harness and it's been worth every penny.

I can also recommend Ezy Dog Neo collars for comfort and durability. All my dogs have previously had their harnesses and they last forever. Lurcherboy has had his for 8 years now, despite swimming in the sea every summer, which used to destroy my older dogs' collars. They sell them at PAH now I think, but their own website is here, although for some reason they seem to cost more if you buy them direct. Confused

barbarianoftheuniverse · 08/11/2013 13:35

Butcher has given Meg (Border collie, 19 weeks) an enormous raw beef knuckle bone. She is teething badly at the moment- munching carpets, walls (stone wall outside!) and tables. Would you hand over the bone?
