Anyone up? SconeDog had an operation today and he has been crying for the last hour and a half

I feel totally useless. :( I had already decided to sleep on the sofa to be near him but he seems in so much pain and the vets didnt send him home any pain killers.

It is such a worry and you are right to stay with him. Is it likely that he is still recovering from the anaesthetic? Many years ago our labrador was given a painkiller that really disagreed with her and she cried for hours. We called the vet and they said that it was common with this drug (can't remember what it was now) and that she was probably not fully aware she was doing this.

It was very upsetting for us at the time, but she did come round after a few hours and settle down. It was a very strong painkiller as she had severe back pain. I don't know if your dog is having a similar reaction to the drugs he has had. Maybe they have given him a longer acting painkiller before they discharged him?

If you are concerned for your dog, then you could give the out of hours vet a ring just for some advice. I hope that he is much better soon.

I'd ring the vet (ours doesn't charge for a phone call, and they shouldn't anyway as its following surgery). Whatever you do don't give any human pain killers unless specifically advised by vet- not everyone realises some of them are toxic to dogs (and cats and probably other animals).

Poor dog, poor you. You're not being useless, you're staying with him, that's bound to help how he feels.

I was advised by my vet after my dog had op to use capol in small doses. But phone your local animal hospital they can advise over the phone free. Hope he feels better soon x

I've just been checking - the thing about paracetamol is that it can be used for dogs (but not for cats), but as with humans you can OD, so working out correct dosage for bodyweight is crucial. That's why you need vets advice.

Your dog may have been given long acting painkillers during or after the operation that you are not aware of so definitely always ALWAYS ring your vet before you give extra medication in this sort of scenario.

The likes of calpol or aspirin mixed with some of the long acting veterinay painkillers can lead to serious side effects....kidney failure,ulcers etc in some cases so please be careful.

what operation did he have? Its very possible he is just reacting to the anesthetic and is feeling very out of sorts.

Thanks everyone. He has had a skin tag removed from the corner of his eyelid and a very large pendulous fat lump that was really bothering him removed, the latter has a drain and I think it is that which is upsetting him the most.

He has settled a little, it is just like a little tiny cry with each out breath iyswim. I spoke to the vet and they said thwt I could give him one of my tramadol - apparently they forgot to tell the nurse to tell me when I pickedd him up (we had been having a big conversation about it before the op as I was prescribed it for my back).

Ohhh poor old boy..and poor you! I hope you both are able to settle down and get a bit of rest. Hate so much when one of our lovely pets is hurting. So good of you to stay by his side. He knows you are there and Im sure that gives him comfort

I remember sitting up with my dog all night after she'd had major surgery, she whined for hours. I ended up taking her to an emergency OOH vet at 2am and spending close to £100 on the call out fee plus an injection of pain killer. Sounds dramatic, but I just felt so sorry for her!

If your dog is anything like mine he will bounce back from his surgery very quickly. After the first day or two of moping around, my dog was suddenly back to normal and you wouldn't think anything had happened to her.

My vet informed me that some strong painkillers that they give dogs after operations can make dogs very vocal and that sometimes they sound like they are singing! Hope your dog is feeling better.
