Dog got really nasty with a random man today :(

My dog has never been keen on men; not quite sure why, but she's nervous around strange men, cowering away a little bit, but never shown any signs of aggression, apart from barking like a loony at the front door!

Today, I was standing at the door of the shop where I work, just quickly popping my head round to check what time I was starting. Several people came in and out, dog was fine just standing there, as she always is. Suddenly, she went mental, barking and snarling at a bloke that tried to come in. She's seen him pretty much every morning on the school run and never paid any attention to him before, and it's so out of character for her to do this :( we've had issues with dog aggression (only when she's on a lead) but we've been training through this, and she's never, ever shown aggression to a person before. Fortunately she was on a short lead, and as soon as I told her to stop, she did, but it's thrown me a bit.

Was she inside the shop? You say he was trying to get in, so she could have seen him as being an intruder.
My little dog is non-aggressive, but wary of some strangers.
Today a man came into the house to deliver something and she went beserk - barking and growling in a scared manner.
He said that always happens with dogs who never bark or growl when he wears a bright florescent green jacket.

I am still shocked at her unexpected reaction.

No we were in the doorway, I literally had half my body in the shop and the other half holding the dog lead outside. She's just never reacted like that to anyone before and it shocked me (and him, he looked petrified!). I think she probably was protecting the place, but she'd let everyone else in and out no problem (it was school run time so loads of people milling about), although, thinking about it, most of them were mums and kids. Strange animal!!

did he smell of drink? My dog hates the smell of alcohol on people

He smelt of weed, he always does! Maybe that was it?

My lovely black lab who loves everyone has taken a particular dislike to a man who lives in our neighbourhood. He lives alone and - I don't know how to say this politely! - but he is a bit odd. However, he has never given the dog any reason to dislike him so intensely.

If I am walking past him (dog on lead), & especially if the children are with me, then the dog will growl/bark at him. I have always told her off and she has stopped. She does not react like this to anyone else. I now cross the road to avoid him if I see him in time.

I do not know why she behaves like this. With any other adult, or child, she is absolutely perfectly behaved. Luckily we do not see this man very often!

My little dog was also barking in a frightened way at another man we met out on a walk. He too looked a bit odd in that he had long tousled hair and despite me chatting to him in a friendly manner, she found something threatening about him. Hmm She probably smelled something on him that I couldn't.

interesting thread here, i thought it was just my dog that was strange! she dont like men much at all, once she knows them she is fine but strangers who are men!!! she goes ballistic!!i will watch this tread with interest!! needless to say i dont let her off lead when out.

Mines usually a bit wary of men but she's never done a devil dog impression with anyone before! However, she hasn't been feeling well (got another thread running) and I think it's probably down to feeling like crap that's made her extra grumpy!

My lab is the most gentle soul ever until our window cleaner comes round and she barks and growls at him the whole time he's here. He is a bit of a nobber so I assumed it was that but I suspect there's more to it than that.

My dog is really fine with everyone. But there have been two men he has just gone loopy at. One is the engineer that came to fix my boiler and the other was man who approached me out on a walk. I completely trust the dog's instincts and assume he sensed something about them he didn't like. When I see this man out on walks I keep well away and I make sure I have someone in the house when I have anyone like the engineer since.

Mine has really gone off on one 3 times (different people) and each time they were at least 40 feet away!! Twice men, one woman.

He loves people of both sexes normally, and these episodes were so strange I do wonder what he senses...............

I walked the other way (away from them) each time just in case!
