Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Yes, weight range is very different - not even related to height as mistlehound is about 1/3 longer than many dogs her height... The vet's happy with her weight. I think she could lose a little bit without it hurting - but not too much. And feeding her less doesn't work as she's very good at telling us that she is VERY HUNGRY and that we forgot to feed her enough and she needs some NOW. All silently of course! Grin I'm making sure we have lots of carrots and cooking some of those so she can have quite a few with her supper - that seems to help on the hunger, and it probably fills her up a bit more without giving her too many calories or doing anything awful to her digestive system [hoping]. But she's not a worker, she's a pet, so she doesn't need to be 'working' fit, just healthy fit and healthy weight (which is clearly not what they're looking for in lurcher classes at shows!!!)

Hi, we have just got a retired greyhound :) He's lovely and settling in really well. (we only got him last saturday!)

Scuttlebutter · 19/09/2013 17:20

Hi Alix, welcome to the cushion! Smile What colour is he? And how old?

mistlethrush · 19/09/2013 20:44

And where's the photo?

Mistlehound having a lovely dream lying on the sofa beside me....

cinnamongreyhound · 19/09/2013 22:04

Hi Alix81! We have a retired greyhound, he's lovely!

I am in love! Best possible first evening with Lola. She's now cuddled between me and dh on the sofa and peanut is on his sofa. She wasn't sick on way home, back off from large hissing cat, peanut wagged his tail at her and they've run around a bit together and she's eaten a bit. Fingers crossed for a good night, got her crate which we'll take up with us to bed.

mistlethrush · 19/09/2013 22:06

Oooh that sounds a promising start - hope all continues well.

moosemama · 20/09/2013 09:13

Hi and welcome Alix. We'd love to hear all about your new greyhound and of course, we all love pictures! Grin

Cinnamon that sounds like a fantastic start. Fingers crossed for the rest of the weekend for you.

Pip has been so good the past couple of days. I've been pretty poorly and just snoozing on the sofa and not much else and he hasn't done one naughty thing.

He had his final vax on Wednesday and will be allowed as of next Wednesday, which will be a huge relief for both him and us, as he's a ball of energy and soooo bored, no to mention we're desperate for him to start socialising with other dogs.

vjg13 · 20/09/2013 10:14

Posted on here a while ago about my two lurchers having dentals, yesterday was the day and they were both fine!

Younger one also had a small lump removed, so slightly sorry for himself with a buster collar and 10 days of very short walks on his lead to endure. Thanks to everyone who posted reassuring comments. Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 14:02

Lola is a total treasure! She's had one accident but slept all night with no probs. She's very pully on a lead but isn't anywhere near as manic as I thought she'd be in the house. She's been on my lap for the last 30mins! She has nicked cuddly toys and will have to keep a closer eye on her than peanut with food. She has taken over peanuts bed though so will need to buy another fleecy bed cover I think.

Peanut's harness arrived today so waiting for belt, line and head torch and I can get running :). Once we've had Lola a week or so I will look into a second line and getting her a harness, probably be able to get her a cheaper one as she's got a more standard chest size than peanut!!

Very grumpy cats though :(

Sorry to hear you're still poorly moosemama and yay for Pip being so good!

mistlethrush · 20/09/2013 14:04

All sounds really good Cinnamon! Has she shown any interest in the cats at all?

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 14:08

If they run she runs but face to face she backs off from them! My ginger tom hissed at her yesterday and she barked at him while walking backwards!

PeanutPatty · 20/09/2013 15:23

Sounds hugely promising! Is Lola from Scruples? I can't remember. My DC have frazzled my brain and memory.

I'm waiting for my other half to get home so I can go for a run. Thinking I should take the dog too but I know a) she will not be keen b) will make it hard going by hanging back c) wander off at the first opportunity. Such a shame she doesn't enjoy it.

mistlethrush · 20/09/2013 15:50

Peanut - pity you don't live nearby as mistlehound would love being a running mate.

moosemama · 20/09/2013 15:53

Glad it's all still going well cinnamon. She sounds lovely. Fingers crossed the cat situation settles down and they manage to agree a mutual peace pact.

Have you ever had a look at the Inner Wolf website? Lots of stuff for running and Canicross.

I'm starting to feel more myself this afternoon. Didn't realise just how off the planet I've been until I started feeling better.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 18:08

No she's from a lady who rescues lurchers, she was in other homeless hounds on LL, but my friend who I run with put me in touch with her because her lurcher is from her. A bit like Heidi's story, she rescued a greyhound and found she was pregnant and then had to rehome a mum and 8 pups. They were all 2 yesterday, only 7 left as one broke a leg and the owners couldn't afford to have it fixed :(

It took probably 6-8 weeks for normality to resume after we got peanut so think it'll be a while. Just needed to gauge how she was with them and she does run if they do but so did peanut. Face to face they hiss she backs off so looks good.

They've had a manic chase around after each other and now are passed out on a sofa each. Got to wake them up to go for a walk!

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 18:10

Did I say I posted a couple of photos?

Just got peanuts harness from this lady she was incredibly helpful! Birthday present early from my mum but will need to do some more shopping soon so may be Christmas too! At least Lola's should be cheaper!

YourHandInMyHand · 20/09/2013 18:14

Ooh cinnamon how lovely Smile

Hello Alix, what colour is your boy?

Been popping in and out of thread but seem so busy at the minute! Am currently preparing for winter. Have ordered dog walking torch, lights for DS's dog walking scooter Hmm and a house coat for ShyDog from Milgi. After much deliberation I chose the heart print one as she's such a girly poser. Grin

PeanutPatty · 20/09/2013 19:00

Mistle I wish you were nearer too! Smile There is a lady over the road who has a whippet x who needs lot of exercise. I did ponder asking if I could take her but appreciate she may not want to.

Do you think a whippet would enjoy running 4-6 miles? Obv not everyday. 2-3 times a week. It was ok running on my own but I would rather have a happy hound to take.

moosemama · 20/09/2013 19:08

Oh Cinammon they look great together! Grin

I'm going to buy Pip a perfect fit harness, as he's got a tiny chest and shoulders but deep ribcage and you can buy individual pieces to upgrade them as they grow. I also want one that has a front D-ring, as I want to have him on a long-line with it until I'm confident of his recall out and about.

I still haven't bought fleece for making Pip's housecoat - I can't make up my mind which one to get. Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 19:45

The lady we got Lola from said she reckons she'll do at least 10 miles Shock peanutpatty. She has some terrier in her but she's very whippety :)

I've just got a headtorch and light for peanuts collar YourHandInMyHand for forest walking in the dark, looks like ill need another collar light Grin

PeanutPatty · 20/09/2013 19:55

Oooh really Cinnamon?! That's some decent mileage. Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 20:09

One of the doggies we run with is a doberman and she's done a marathon!!!!

PeanutPatty · 20/09/2013 21:50

No way? Bloody hells bells!! A marathon? Blush Does it run in boots? Thinking about pad wear?

cinnamongreyhound · 20/09/2013 22:21

Nope she didn't just a canicross harness and off she went! Her owner is trying I persuade us to do the north Norfolk half with the dogs next year. I said I didn't think peanut was up to it but he's definitely gained stamina in the last two months but I want running to be fun for him not drag him round!

PeanutPatty · 20/09/2013 23:19

Perhaps try a 10k and see how he fairs? I definitely drag Poochio round. Not a pleasant sight or feeling hence why I've stopped taking her. It's a shame as she gives me big bear eyes and is desperate to come along.
