Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Thank you. I will get one of those types and make sure it has the padding across the nose area. Do they come in different sizes? Given that she is more like a large whippet size, should I look for a whippet muzzle?

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2013 20:02

Mine are very good with recall if there's nothing else around! Peanut will stand and think about it but usually go for the person/dog and Lola is about 50:50 with others around. After they ran off and terrorised a lady, didn't actually do anything but she was convinced they were going to rip her dog to pieces I felt awful and haven't let them off except when I run with them as we're far from the country park and it's dark at the moment so really no one around. I am planning to start again with training using a whistle but dh said he'd get a whistle so I haven't and he keeps forgetting! I started with peanut outside in a tennis court as recommended here and then the next time when I was with others with dogs when we run as that really helped, the will trained dogs came back and he followed :)

mistlethrush · 06/12/2013 20:14

Bryte - if you pm the person that has the thread on muzzles on the lurcherlink forum I gave you, they will advise on muzzle size for you.

The whippet racing muzzles are simply less deep than the lurcher ones - which are less deep than the greyhound ones - they come in different lengths though and head lengths too.

Its a very friendly lurcher forum too... Wink

CMOTDibbler · 06/12/2013 20:20

Pat I think you are just down the motorway from me and v near my ILs, so if you would like to do some recall practice with a pointy who does recall I'd be more than happy to meet up.

PatTheHammer · 06/12/2013 20:45

Thanks CMOT that's a lovely thing to do, a great idea too as she loves other pointys.

My neighbours staffy who she loves is just not reliable enough, he'd be too much of a bad influence!
When I'm on the laptop I will PM you whereabouts we are (near junction 13).

CMOTDibbler · 06/12/2013 20:49

We are between j7 and j8

PatTheHammer · 06/12/2013 21:24

Oh not that far then, takes me about 30 mins to get to junction 9 on a good run.

TooOldForGlitter · 06/12/2013 21:25

Hi everybody Smile

Just wanted to pop in to say thanks for the zoom groom recommendation. It arrived Weds and Bob LOVES it! It pulls all his old hair out, clears his dry flaky bits and zonks him out! Thanks girls.

Separate note; do greyhounds prefer adults or is it Bob specific. DD is 10 but 11 in May. Bob seems to tolerate rather than like her. I have encouraged supervised grooming, lead walks, treats, commands etc but I can't honestly word it better than he thinks she is OK amd nothing more. Normal??

TooOldForGlitter · 06/12/2013 21:26

She is 11 in April not May Blush

PatTheHammer · 06/12/2013 21:34

Glitter- not sure, Dee loves the kids, especially DD but I think that's because she is a shy dog and children seem less threatening. She is less shaky and nervous with men but she is still wary of them.

It could be that his main attachment is to you and he is a sort of one person dog who likes other people but doesn't bond as strong to them?

mistlethrush · 06/12/2013 21:56

We think that mistlehound has lots of greyhound - but loves DS. Although she won't sit next to him on the sofa and I have to sit in the middle. I suppose that means that she's really fond of him on her terms but is still a little wary. What is lovely is that she will happily join him if he has the lead (which makes it much easier for him in 'young handler' classes) and will happily trail along with him!

TooOldForGlitter · 06/12/2013 22:05

Thinking perhaps that Bob has children issues (am I really saying these words on MN! LOL will be next!) and its not just the glitter kid. Building up their bond I hope by having her groom him and treat him afterwards.

Just had lovely ten mins clicker training him to leave a piece of cheese in my flat palmed hand. Super success and now he is all proud of himself and happy tailing Grin.

Lovely to hear how your hounds have bonded, can you lend me the hounds/kids?!

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2013 22:11

My nelly loved the kids and I agree with PatTheHammer that I think it was because they are less threatening to a timid dog. Peanut is great with my two but he's not so tolerant of my minded kids, perhaps I am not fair to say that as at times there are 11 children in my living room and they are quite noisy at times. He lays on his bed and if one of them gets a bit close to hi me occasionally grumbles. If they are jumping around he has snapped a couple of times. But he'd probably never met a child before he lived with us. Lola loves the kids, they play with her and she'll happily settle on a child's lap, even my little 2 year old minded little boy. Her and ds1 are bestest friends :)

CMOTDibbler · 06/12/2013 22:16

My lurcher is very firmly bonded to ds. As in, they lie together on the sofa, cmotdog will go an lie in bed with him (sneaks off, opens ds's door and gets in), and you can tell him to go find ds and he'll track him down.

But he is a softy Smile

TooOldForGlitter · 06/12/2013 22:26

I don't mean to say Bob is ever grumpy or intolerant of DD. Just that he will rarely respond or listen to her.

cinnamongreyhound · 07/12/2013 00:15

I think that's normal! My kids do their serious do as your told voices to the dogs and get no response Wink

bryte · 07/12/2013 13:51

Thanks Mistlethrush We got our beautiful dog from me stalking rescues on LL so I ought to return and be more active. I will email the muzzle person. :)

PeanutPatty · 07/12/2013 22:47

PeanutPooch blatantly ignores the children. Poor DC1 gets so upset as he attempts to tell her to wait or stay close. Pooch tolerates the children. Often moving or looking away if they persist too much with lavishing affection and so I remove Pooch. Tbf Pooch is pretty good and puts up with being accidentally climbed on/over, poked but I never leave them alone together. Simply not fair or wise.

Scuttlebutter · 08/12/2013 01:55

TooOld, don't forget that for most ex racing greyhounds, they will simply never have come across DC before. He has still been with you a fairly short time and his behaviour sounds completely normal. He is getting used to you all and adjusting to life as a family member - it's a big steep learning curve for them. All the things you are doing sound great - just be patient and let DD and Bob gradually build their relationship.

One of the lovely things about adopting ex racers is watching their personalities unfold and how they gradually get used to family members and play/tickles etc. When our first grey joined us he was petrified of all men and not at all sure of DH - for instance he didn't like DH touching his head or going anywhere near him with a tie or a belt Sad. Now, he is the biggest soppiest loon you could imagine, and will quite happily lie ON DH in the most perculiar positions and they have such fun playing together.

You might find it helpful to take DD with you to dog training classes - most classes are happy to have DC there adn she might really enjoy it. It will strengthen their bond immensely.

Lots of greys though won't ever be super-demonstrative - part of their charm is that they will just come quietly over to you for a lean or a sniff. We've got a real mixed bag here - one is quite self contained (apart from his adoration of DH), two really sociable ones and one who's snuggly with people she knows/likes but not fussed with strangers.

cinnamongreyhound · 08/12/2013 17:10

My mum has just bought a shih tzu Shock she has no idea what to do with him, she just asked me what he drinks! He's 7 weeks old and very cute but has already wee's in te floor twice and poo'd once and is running around eating her trousers. Will be nice to cuddle though and remind me why I don't want a puppy Grin

Jessiebaba · 08/12/2013 17:18

Hi everyone. Do you mind if I join? I've not long found out I'm pregnant (got my first scan a week on Monday - FX everything is OK!) and am the proud mum of two rescue ex-racing greyhounds.

Did any of you have your sighthounds before children or did the dogs come after? Xmas Smile

Jessiebaba · 08/12/2013 17:59

Trying to work my way through the old posts on the thread but there's a lot! Shock Anyway, got the impression you'd want to know more about my pooches so I've added a pic of them.

Jessie is on the left, 3 years old and a total honey - we adopted her 14 months ago. Bart on the right, 7 years old and a big sook but does have some 'issues' with unfamiliar dogs - we adopted Bart 11 months ago. Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 08/12/2013 18:49

Hi Jessiebaba, can't see your profile at the moment so can't see the photo. I had my first greyhound before children, she was 4 when I got her and 6 1/2 when I had ds1 but I met dh 8 months after I got her and he had 3 year old dss at the time so she had to get used to a child pretty quickly! I had been away from the house for 3 days when I had ds1 so she was super pleased to see me, I sat with ds1 and gave her lots of fuss and let her sniff him gently and we didn't have any problems with them at all.

Jessiebaba · 08/12/2013 18:54

Hi cinnamongreyhound You should be able to see the pic now...still getting to grips with this... Confused

cinnamongreyhound · 08/12/2013 19:14
