Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Oh- and Cinnamon, you might find that they need to wear housecoats too - depends how warm your house is - and whether it goes cooler at night.

PatTheHammer · 24/11/2013 08:41

I'm going to wait until the GRWE Christmas play group next week to buy my housecoat for Dee. I had a look in the shops yesterday and they are so bloody expensive there. Much better to buy them through the charity I think, and cheaper too!

I'm not sure she really needs it as I turn the thermostat to 15 degrees at night, dd has juvenile arthritis and we can never let it get too cold as her joints wouldn't be thankful in the morning. Also Dee's crate is right next to the rad in the kitchen, she has a double duvet and 2 fleece blankets so it looks pretty cosy.

She is still really thin though, I keep thinking that she looks to have put on some weight since we've had her, she's eating well, but then when I brush her or something I realise how skinny she is. I think she wasn't unhealthy, just kept at minimum weight for racing and then a bit of stress at going to the rescue kennels as she is a timid dog might have caused her to lose a bit?

Anyhow, food question. Does £36 for a 15kg bag of premium dry food sound good? We probably have about a weeks worth left of the stuff they have us from the kennels. I looked around yesterday and similar stuff is about £50 in Pets at Home.
£36 was on amazon. It's salmon and potato variety for working dogs. She seems to like it so were going to keep her on it for now.

PatTheHammer · 24/11/2013 08:43

Mistle- sounds exciting about getting terrier! At least your dogs have met her before so sounds like shouldn't be too much upheaval.

Glitter- meant to say that I was pleased about Bobs nail and that he didn't need an X-ray.

mistlethrush · 24/11/2013 09:07

We're not going to talk to DS about it - he knows that we've offered to have her (last christmas) - but things are moving on there - Aunt is going to need to move as the house is too big for her and unaffordable and she can't drive and it doesn't have a good bus service etc etc.

Small dog would find it a big upheaval - but once settled in I think that she would fit in fine and actually rather like it. At the moment she's underweight (so we would have an over weight lurcher and under weight terrier - something wrong there!!!) - the aunt has learning difficulties and very fixed ideas and you can't tell her that she's not feeding her enough (well, we have, but I'm not sure that its gone in).

Mistlehound managed to get into the muddy gunge at one end of a small lake yesterday - she managed to get her head back to the edge, but couldn't get out and I had to haul her out - then walk down to another lake and send her swimming to get the worst off. I gave her a bath as soon as we got home and she's all lovely and fluffy. Not too much eau de lake about her this morning thankfully.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/11/2013 13:54

Yuk! Poor you mistlethrush, glad you got her out ok though. I think having two dogs of very different sizes is actually really nice and I'm sure you sort out eating and walking pretty soon :)

Lola was a bit overweight when we got her so she's been quite a pain with food since we go her as I think t must have been cut down. Peanut has had 500g dry food since we got him, plus a tin of sardines in oil twice a week and he only ever eats all his food when it has the fish in it until the last week that is. They also have a couple of chicken wings twice a week and treats. Peanut looks pretty much perfect to me and the vet was happy with him. I'm home most of the day so the heating is on most of the time around 20C at night it goes off 11pm-5.30am but neither of them have woken dh (he's a very light sleeper) moving around so guessing they're happy so far.

We pay £13.99 for 15Kg PatTheHammer, it's from a local pet shop who make their own. The most I've paid is £25 but I'm sure others will disagree.

PatTheHammer · 24/11/2013 14:29

My local indie pet shop only seem to do the well known stuff like royal canin and James well beloved and it seems quite pricey.

Dee loves sardines or pilchards in oil twice a week too. Trying to sort out her coat as she is really flakey at the moment. I don't know what she has in grams we have a large scoop and they told us 2 of those per day plus she is used to a bit of meat on top. They gave her chappie but I can't bear the smell of it so I've been splitting a pouch of some chunks in gravy between morning and evening feed. She doesn't seem fussy as to which brand. It's only a tiny but mixed in as a taster really. We've tried it without and she hardly eats any of the dried food without it...fussy mare!

PatTheHammer · 24/11/2013 14:30

The stuff we bought from the rescue was £26 for 15kg. I might carry on shopping around this week. We have an animal feeds place near us. They might do dog food though I suspect it's mostly horse feed etc.

PeanutPatty · 24/11/2013 21:47

We feed Sardines or Pilchards in tomato sauce. Is oil better?

Anyone any experience about rehoming greys from the track but have been in foster?

Annie from LL is still firmly in my head.

PeanutPatty · 24/11/2013 21:52

Excites about the BT Mistle. One lives up the road. He's a right character.

Cinnamon I would imagine that in the winter that perhaps some dogs who have high energy/stress possibly use more calories trying to stay warm in winter?

cinnamongreyhound · 24/11/2013 23:05

Both my greyhounds were straight from kennels sorry peanutpatty, would have thought time in foster can only be a good thing :) The oil is supposed to be better for their coat I believe. Any developments with Annie?

mistlethrush · 24/11/2013 23:50

Ours has the ones in tomatoes - we are trying to cut her cals down!!!

BT isn't here yet - and its still not definite - just looks a bit more likely.

Mistlehound is looking slightly better than she did weight wise - but she's still VERY heavy... I know there's lots of muscle but I think that she could do with a little less covering - you can feel her ribs, but its just that little bit too much ifykwim....

We have been invited to join a 'friendly dog's club' - we arrived a bit late yesterday accidentally - and were invited - but got there at the right time today. Mistledog was very good and pretty well behaved - apart from the running off with someone else's toy and rather than running around getting chased, telling off anyone that came near... or running A LONG WAY AWAY just so that no one else could pinch it!!!

PeanutPatty · 25/11/2013 18:10

I said I wouldn't pursue Annie as felt her recall and other dog issues might be too much for me when walking with the children plus I don't think LL would consider us due to having such young children. Have heard of a two year old ex racer who has been suggested. She's quite active allegedly and we want a running companion but we won't be running every day and my concern is that perhaps she might be too much work and is cat trainable. Really I need cat proof.

mistlethrush · 25/11/2013 18:31

Have you asked LL about the children angle? Many of those with foster dogs have children or grandchildren...

cinnamongreyhound · 25/11/2013 18:44

She's living with a cat though isn't she? Sure I saw a photo on her original thread.

TooOldForGlitter · 25/11/2013 18:56

Hello everyone Smile

Hope all are well. I'm after a recommendation for a good brush for a grey. I got Bob a handmitt type thing with short rubbery bristles but it isnt really doing the job. On a separate issue we saw him run yesterday, properly, for the first time. I nearly cried, it was brill! Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 25/11/2013 19:07

I also want a second hound but think DP will leave me if I do and i'd miss him cooking the tea every night Grin

mistlethrush · 25/11/2013 20:04

Zoom grooms seem to be generally liked by dogs being groomed (which is half the battle)

PatTheHammer · 25/11/2013 20:33

Dee loves the zoom groom and it brings out handfuls of fluff, it's really effective.

So nice to see him running, bet its amazing watching them properly go for the first time.
We have the Xmas playgroup on Sunday where they are doing organised runs and she is booked in at 11am, it's in an indoor equestrian centre. Just hope the whistle training pays off and she bloody well comes back when it's time to put the lead on!

I'd love another hound but my sofa is not big enoughSad

PeanutPatty · 25/11/2013 20:36

TooOld

Annie is fine with cats. The grey that has been suggested seems no longer cat trainable. Our cat has decided to bless us with his presence this evening despite not seeing him for almost five days so we will have to stick with a cat friendly dog. I might drop her foster another enquiry.

TooOldForGlitter · 25/11/2013 21:50

Just ordered the zoom groom. In blue of course, obe must always buy into gender stereotypes whether human or canine Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 25/11/2013 21:51

Dammit! One not obe!

TooOldForGlitter · 25/11/2013 21:56

Was fab to see him running. Was v unexpected, went walking with my mum and dad and bumped into a fella my dad had worked with near forty years ago! He happened to own the farm we were passing by, loves greyhounds and offered us his paddock to let Bob run with his granddaughter riding her horse alongside (at a distance from Bob, I had pfd issues about him going off course and being galloped over Blush).

He outstripped the horse after about four strides Grin.

mistlethrush · 25/11/2013 22:20

We were walking in a nearby park on Saturday morning and saw what looked like a nice bunch of dogs playing with their owners standing around chatting - so we went over and mistlehound introduced herself to anyone that had the potential to be carrying biscuits, then played nicely with a couple of the dogs a bit - generally just pootling around and not getting involved too much - and we were invited to join the 'friendly dogs club' Grin. We met again on the Sunday - and there was a much bigger group of dogs and mistlehound managed to do very well - remarkably laid back, despite the number of dogs - although she did tell a couple off rather vocally. There was also a lovely puppy that was very happily socialising with all of the others - how wonderful for it to be socialised with such a big friendly group! We weren't the only lurcher owners - another one is obviously a regular member - and another scruffy owner joined towards the end too.

TooOldForGlitter · 25/11/2013 22:27

That sounds lovely mistle, great social fun for MH Smile. Is she recovered from her fight with the garden post now?

Wish I could find something similar in my area, I seem to be the only pointy owner for miles around.

mistlethrush · 25/11/2013 22:31

That was part of the surprise - that we were invited to join 'despite' her being a scary scruffy lurcher!

She seems to be completely recovered apart from a shiny pink scar on her knee that is currently hairless....
