Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

TooOld - sighthound owners are usually incredibly sociable. Ask at the rescue where you adopted about events - most have things like regular sighthound walks, playdates etc. Go along to a few of these and I guarantee you'll quickly make some new pointy friends - also incredibly useful as you can set up a pointy dog sitting circle - so if you need a night away, your hound can go for a sleepover. Smile There are also masses of groups on FB that give info on sighthound events, social gatherings etc.

I was talking to the Welfare Officer for the RGT recently at the ACDH conference, and she was making this point, that after many years of being involved with dog rescues, she has never seen anything like the way sighthound owners really do invest socially in the breed. I was thinking about it afterwards, and she was absolutely spot on - most Lab owners for instance don't join clubs or rush up to other lab owners in the park to talk about collars Blush or discuss pedigrees.

I agree Scuttle - there's a whole new world of dogs opened up for me suddenly, having a lurcher, that I wasn't aware of before. And practically al of them are so friendly too.

cinnamongreyhound · 26/11/2013 08:24

Sorry peanutpatty I missed that sentence about the greyhound.

I agree with being sociable, I've been on a few greyhound walks and they are very friendly. The rescue we got peanut from has a fb page and people often arrange to walk together as well the big regularly arranged walking dates and activities.

TooOldForGlitter · 26/11/2013 19:56

We adopted Bob from a branch of RGT that's 120 mile round trip from us so not sure their social events are doable for us. The local branch don't seem to keep on top of their website although I am checking daily to see when they update their 2014 events page.

We have only met one other grey on our walks thus far and it was an elderly fella with an elderly dog. Should have been a bit more pro-active and roped him in for a doggy date but i'm a bit of a soft arse and didn't!

TooOldForGlitter · 26/11/2013 19:57

I'm in Lancashire if anyone is nearby Grin

mistlethrush · 26/11/2013 21:07

TooOld - I know quite a few pointy hound owners over in that direction...

PeanutPatty · 26/11/2013 21:35

I've said we need cat safe. Cat trainable is hugely questionable isn't it?

PeanutPatty · 26/11/2013 21:49

TooOld are you on LL? Someone has recently posted "Hi from Lancashire" Grin You should get on there and say Hi back! Could be a potential play date?

cinnamongreyhound · 26/11/2013 22:03

Lola wasn't cat safe as she'd never seen a cat but her behaviour with other situations suggested she'd be fine and she was but I guess it's not an exact science :)

mistlethrush · 27/11/2013 09:07

Annie needs a new foster home if anyone can think of anyone that might be able to help...

PeanutPatty · 27/11/2013 13:03

I'd love to foster her !

cinnamongreyhound · 27/11/2013 13:58

Go for it then PeanutPatty!

cinnamongreyhound · 27/11/2013 14:00

Laura is a bitch!

cinnamongreyhound · 27/11/2013 14:00

Whoops sorry wrong thread Blush

PeanutPatty · 27/11/2013 14:04

Ha ha at Cinnamon!

mistlethrush · 27/11/2013 16:37

I would be very surprised at someone calling their boy dog 'Laura' Cinnamon... Wink

TooOldForGlitter · 27/11/2013 18:21

Im not on LL but will register if worth it. Point me at those owners mistle! I am a bad owner today though, poor Bob's only had 20 minutes walk with DP as my dodgy hip is playing up. I know he'll survive but I do feel guilty!

Tell us more about that utter bitch Laura Grin

mistlethrush · 27/11/2013 18:33

TooOld - I can't think that anyone would object to you joining, even though you haven't got a lurcher as such... there's an 'introduction' from the NW that's recent...

TooOldForGlitter · 27/11/2013 18:45

Cheers mistle, will have a look on there later.

cinnamongreyhound · 28/11/2013 16:52

Don't know if it's of interest but I have just had one of these made :)

mistlethrush · 28/11/2013 18:45

I particularly like the one of the terrier up against the forest background...

TooOldForGlitter · 30/11/2013 20:33

Ugh, just ugh. Gutted. Bob got attacked by a cairn terrier today on walk Sad

He's ok, hes had painkiller and antib injection and seven stitches to his shoulder. It looked worse than it was but hes all sad and wobbly and tbh I am too. He did nothing wrong Sad

PatTheHammer · 30/11/2013 21:03

Oh no, poor Bob!Sad

What happened? I'm not sure what that type of dog is like but both times that my parents dogs were attacked it was a fairly small terrier and they did quite a lot of damage.
Was Bob off the lead?
You poor things, you all must be in shock, you probably more so than bob.

TooOldForGlitter · 30/11/2013 22:26

We went for a walk along a disused railway line in the countryside, all great, the walk back took us on the canal. We saw a group coming, three adults and an older teen and three off lead dogs. Two JRTs and the cairn. Bob was on his lead, me holding. We stopped to let them past because the towpath was narrow and they were walking in a line and not moving for nobody.

The owners were quite far back with the dogs running on ahead, the two jack russels passed by without a glance but the other dog ran at Bob and snapped in his face. I moved off quick and passed the owners who didnt say anything, fair enough, it happens. I.stopped to let DP catch up and the dog ran back at us, catching my ankle and Bobs shoulder as it jumped. Owners were.ahead of me now going in opposite direction, so we walked on and all good for a couple of mins until out of nowhere, from behind, ran under Bobs legs snapping, jumped up and took a bite from his shoulder. He turned to snap it off, i put my leg out to stop Bob and the other dog got my leg too.

Owners blamed my 'reactive dangerous mutt' and i had to restrain myself from chucking the twat in the canal. Great!

TooOldForGlitter · 30/11/2013 22:29

I shouldn't have posted ooh it was a cairn, i'm just upset. All the cairn terriers i have met previously have been lovely little dogs.
