Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Updating. Back from vets, had to wait 40 minutes to be seen grrr.

She doesn't think his toe is broken, more that he has stepped on something, possibly glass, and it has cut or damaged the soft part between his two middle toes where there is no pad to protect. He screamed like a banshee when she prodded him there. She recommended he have an antibiotic injection, a painkilling injection and a course of anti-inflammatories and to rest for 24 hours. So no walking for the poor boy for a while. He has an appointment for Monday evening for an x-ray if he is no better by then.

He's flaked out in front of the fire with a blanket over him, seems very dopey, perhaps the painkiller and he feels cold although the house is fairly warm Sad

Just seen that post on your photos mistle, she must have clobbered it with some force! Hope she is OK.

PatTheHammer · 16/11/2013 17:26

Get well soon Bob! Hope he feels better soon, very relieved it wasn't anything broken.

To cheer you up I have uploaded some photos of Dee to my profile. just realise that the photos on my profile were all so old. DS was a massive chunky baby..........he is nearly 5 now. 5 years of mumsnet gone in a flash!

Had a nose at Bobs pics, love his bandana!

TooOldForGlitter · 16/11/2013 18:27

Oh she is beautiful Pat, love the photo of her walking with your DS.

He has a Christmas gnomes bandana too, they are fab!

mistlethrush · 16/11/2013 19:12

I'm not surprised that she screamed. I am surprised she didn't break something. She went for a lead walk today - actually went quite slowly on the way home so I hope we didn't do too much - but it was all at a gentle pace, so hopefully not too much. Painkillers definitely flake her out too - she's been lying on the sofa asleep most of the day. I took DS swimming this afternoon as we'd not managed to walk him enough this morning with the dog.

PeanutPatty · 16/11/2013 21:42

Hope all the poorly hounds are feeling brighter. Pooch is snuggled up on the sofa with me all twitching and snoozing away. Must be dreaming of chasing rabbits, squirrels, deer and pheasants.

Anyone seen Mo on Greyhound Gap? Wheaten x Saluki. Bloody gorgeous. Still love Annie on LL.

Scuttlebutter · 16/11/2013 22:44

Too Old, so sorry to hear about his toe injury. It's very common for them to either break or lose a toenail when racing. Our old boy who we lost last year had a v typical front foot - of the front two pads, one nail was missing completely and the other was at a very funny angle and discoloured. It would grow very slowly and often fell out on walks - our nephews used to like looking at it under their microscope! Vet said it had been damaged while racing. Might be able to find a pic showing it.

Hope the bruising is soon on the mend, and that Mistle's hound is also soon recovering.

We are just back from a wonderful week in Pembrokeshire. On only the second day, one of the dogs found a decomposing dead seal and rolled in it joyfully. Grin Hmm We had to give her an emergency bath, wash her coat, and all teh dog beds in the car, and still couldn't shift the smell in the car. It was VILE. It was just beginning to improve, when they found ANOTHER dead seal, and this time all four rolled in it. At that point DH and I just sort of gave up. Grin

mistlethrush · 16/11/2013 23:03

[scuttle] (that's not envy! Actually, it is about having a week in Pembrokeshire to have just got back from - I had a lovely holiday there with my parents when we had just got our 2nd collie cross - good thing she was on a flexi lead or she would have been over the edge of the cliff chasing the seagulls or rabbits on the coastal path.

Mistlehound is slightly dopey - but doesn't seem to be in too much pain, and enjoys eating her butter-encased antibiotics and painkillers/ anti-inflamatories. Looking at the post today has made me realise how lucky we are that she doesn't appear to have hurt herself too badly.

DH doesn't (yet) know that I sent off for two new tags when I was at the vets... one small one for a tag collar which just has essential info (2 phone numbers and 'chipped') and the other with more info for her normal collar - we sometimes take her normal collar off at home and I will be a lot happier when she has a light tag collar on for nipping down the garden (although we're going to go and bubble wrap potential hazards after Friday morning's debacle)

cinnamongreyhound · 17/11/2013 19:13

Yuk to the seal but yay to the holiday scuttlebutter Grin

Hope Bob doesn't need the x-Ray TooOldForGlitter.

Mine have been a bit neglected this weekend, no extra weekend walks at all :(. My and the boys went shopping with my mum yesterday so I did morning walk and they were home with dh all day and today I've run my first half marathon so I took them out this morning and then they were home alone for a bit and I was knackered when I got back so had a lay down, did homework with ds1, and did dinner while dh walked dogs again. Feeling very guilty but they seem just as happy having cuddles :)

PeanutPatty · 17/11/2013 21:46

We were competing today too Cinnamon so Pooch didn't get any extra exercise. Doesn't seem bothered and is sparko on the lounge floor.

mistlethrush · 17/11/2013 23:26

Well mistlehound was competing in a photo competition and got 2 seconds and a first (half of a best lurcher brace with the dog that she was kenneled with in the rescue)(that one makes me particularly happy as they didn't get a look in on the 'RL' brace class they were in together - they're just too stocky and mistlehound's rather long for her height when you compare them to 'normal' lurchers....

cinnamongreyhound · 18/11/2013 07:18

Yay! Go mistlehound, that's exciting. We're hoping to go for some family classes next year and perhaps child handler as ds1 wants to hold the dogs when we're out a lot :)

mistlethrush · 18/11/2013 09:05

DS has taken mistlehound into 2 child handler classes... We need to work on it a bit. The first one he was really good (and got a 1st). The second one he wasn't (and actually tried to get mistlehound out of a sit to follow him by pulling her ears Shock (albeit gently!)) and he only got a 3rd - I said he was lucky to get that given the ear incident! He just forgot what he was doing - but then I was ring steward so not getting him thinking right before going in and DH was overseeing... Hmm

mistlethrush · 20/11/2013 08:55

For all you greyhound owners (my lurcher wouldn't want to wear this )

cinnamongreyhound · 20/11/2013 10:19

Can't imagine either of mine wearing that either mistlethrush!! But I have discovered over the last few days that Lola loves being under the covers, she will totally cover herself and go in head first, never had a dog before that would choose to be covered up :)

mistlethrush · 20/11/2013 20:53

I think that some lurchers like to have a cover put over them every night... so make sure that you don't get yourself any additional chores unless you're willing to do them for the next x no. years!!!

cinnamongreyhound · 21/11/2013 07:45

That's usually in the morning, as soon as we wake up she wriggles in :) she sleeps on her own bed uncovered but I have seen some beds that look like giant fluffy pitta breads with the dog inside!

mistlethrush · 21/11/2013 08:44

Cinnamon - do you mean things like this ? I think mistlehound would just perch on top Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 21/11/2013 16:26

Yep that's it I might look into it, Lola would love one I think :)

mistlethrush · 21/11/2013 17:42

If you can get one that your dog can 'get into' themselves its going to be a lot easier than having to tuck them in every night Grin I would check on how easy to launder they are though...

cinnamongreyhound · 21/11/2013 18:47

That's true, don't want to have to visit the laundrette! I think she could get into most things herself. It's quite pricey for me though :(

mistlethrush · 21/11/2013 20:40

I bet you could get a 'normal' high sided foam bed and attach a Double fleece top....

TooOldForGlitter · 21/11/2013 21:07

Just updating re: Bob. He didn't need the xray in the end, by Sunday afternoon he was almost walking normally. Swelling had gone completely and he seemed back to normal, perky and daft again :)

Monday morning I took him out before work and it was as if he'd never been hurt so called vet who advised to not come in for appt. and just keep an eye on him. He's been right as rain all week Smile

Shoutymomma · 21/11/2013 22:06

My whippy likes to be on top of his duvet in his cage. Duvet is KS folded I to 4 and cage has furry blanket over it so there are no draughts, but I still expect him to get cold. However, coming upstairs in the morning, he insists on being under the duvet.

Jack Russell is the complete opposite; gets herself under duvet (in cage or on DD bed) and stays there all night. Lard knows how she doesn't evaporate.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/11/2013 19:34

My two are eating so much at the moment and begging all the time! Is this a normal winter thing, should I feed them more?

mistlethrush · 24/11/2013 08:30

If they are on the thin side and you're not worried about their weight being too much, yes, they can eat more to generate additional heat. Mistlehound isn't being given any more and I hope that she's going to lose a kilo or two!

There is a possibility we might get a small border terrier at some time in the future... She's my DH's aunt's (well, actually, she's his grandmother's but GM is in a home - and she and aunt have lived together so aunt is also looking after that dog too). She's really small for a border, has been allowed to get away with too much and doesn't have any good outdoor walking skills, but she has a lovely nature, and I'm sure that we would be able to sort her out in time.

Mistlehound met her last christmas and found it rather peculiar living with a small thing you could trip over, but didn't mind it too much - and at times was curled up on her blanket next to me with the border terrier curled up on my lap... We shall see what happens - but it's likely to be later rather than sooner.
