Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

I could really use some advice if anyone is able. Apologies if this is long.

Been at work all day, left at 7.30 and Bob was fine. DP got up at 8 and took Bob for a quick trot around block for 15 mins and he was fine then too. DP works from home so went to his computer at 9 and Bob snoozes on landing while he works. All fine. He took Bob out at lunch for a walk, approx half hour, noticed that on the last five mins or so he was limping on back leg, holding it up intermittently then putting all four down and limping. DP checks quite carefully that there is no glass etc on pavements but clearly he could have missed a bit.

I got home and he is limping very badly now. Holding the leg up most of the time. He is fine in himself, not whimpering, eating great, being his silly self etc. I have had a feel of his leg and no glinching so I dont think its his leg. Cant see anything in his paw but he flinched and whined when i applied a bit of pressure to the pad under his middle two toes/nails.

Basically not sure what to do. See how he fares overnight and go vet AM? Attempt to ferret around his paw a bit more to see if he has glass or something stuck there? Any advice very gratefully received. Sorry for typos, am on battered phone.

PeanutPatty · 15/11/2013 20:28

I'm no expert but I'd have another look. Check his nails too. Check for any fine paper cut type slices. See how he is tmw am and then make a decision then.

Thanks for the Pooch recommendation. Will have a look at him.

Sorry! Hope Mistlehound is healing and not protesting about the lead walks.

mistlethrush · 15/11/2013 20:37

TooOld - how sensitive is he with you looking at his feet? I'm able to have a really good feel of mistlehounds feet - all the way between the toes, each toe individually - if you're really gentle you might be able to identify exactly where its hurting him.

TooOldForGlitter · 15/11/2013 20:39

Thanks peanutpatty. Ive had another quick nose while he is snoozing and it looks to me as though one of his two middle nails is bent back iyswim. Almost like when we catch a fingernail and the whole nail bends back, but, he has previous injuries on that foot and his toes are misaligned so not sure if im seeing it 'right' if that makes sense.

Going to give him a pigs ear shortly so may have another check then while he is distracted. Hate seeing him limping like this Sad

PatTheHammer · 15/11/2013 20:40

Glitter- could his pad just be sore from pavement walking?

Our girl has had a few tender pads last week but they have seemed to settle down. I phoned the lady from GRWE and she said it was very common as they are used to being exercised on sand tracks and not pavements. Their pads toughen up with time.
Sorry, don't know how long you have had Bob or if indeed he is recently retired. But might be a solution if you can't see any tears, grazes or foreign objects in his pads?

Poor Mistlehound :-( hope she feels better soon.

Dee did a 4.5 mile walk with me on Wednesday, that's her longest walk to date. She seemed to love it but my goodness she was shattered afterwards!

TooOldForGlitter · 15/11/2013 20:42

Hi mistle, he has been ok with me handling his feet so far but im so wary of hurting him. Im fairly sure it is the nail or the soft part between the pad.

TooOldForGlitter · 15/11/2013 20:44

Thanks Pat, we have had him 5 weeks tomorrow. He finished racing in August and was in a foster home until we adopted him 5 weeks ago.

I know I have walked him probably a million miles more than he has been used to, hopefully he is just a bit sore? Don't you just wish they could tell you Smile

mistlethrush · 15/11/2013 20:45

If you're worried, get someone to hold his head and keep him occupied - ideally with something nice to eat or lick whilst you do your bit - mistlehound accepts that I'm trying to help now...

He might have broken his nail - which would be very sore - but he would have had to do some pretty fast running / speed changes to do that I would have thought - not just walking along a pavement.

When the vet first looked she thought mistlehound had lots of swelling - then discovered it was muscle - and had a muscle to match on the otherside... She was amazed at the muscle that MH has!!! Grin (So I'm a bit less Blush at her weight!!!)

TooOldForGlitter · 15/11/2013 21:02

It does look to me as though one nail is pointing up rather than being in line with the others but he was just on a grass and pavement lead walk Confused

TooOldForGlitter · 15/11/2013 21:05

Grin at muscly mistlehound. Doggy equivalent of being 'big boned' perhaps? that's my excuse

mistlethrush · 15/11/2013 21:19

One of the reasons we chose her was the sturdier bones - based on today's escapade I am really glad (I'm pretty sure some dogs would have broken something). She has got a lot of muscle - its not really that obvious because of the scruffieness.

Can you do a photo and put it on your profile so we can see?

TooOldForGlitter · 15/11/2013 21:30

Geez just read your post about MH, must have been pretty panicky! Sounds as though she had a reasonably fortunate escape. Hope she is OK now.

He's fully asleep with the offending foot tucked away atm but will take a pic as soon as I can.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/11/2013 21:52

Oh no poor injured dogs :(

Not that I want to suggest that he's not hurt himself but he is a greyhound TooOldForGlitter so super wussy! Peanut often limps and howls and then is fine a while afterwards. Give it overnight and see how he is in the morning.

I think Lola is at the peak of her season now, she keeps trying to entice peanut and he's mounted her a couple of times! Luckily he's been castrated so I don't have to worry but he's also far too big.

Little buggers got most of a packet of chocolate digestives today and ate the lot :( as peanut seems to poo after he's eaten every time he poo'd on the carpet too :(

mistlethrush · 15/11/2013 23:17

mistlehound is upside down next to me, dreaming. She's not eaten very much - but then she's not done very much either (and is probably rather spaced out on pain killers)

TooOldForGlitter · 16/11/2013 09:10

Thanks for all your advice last night everyone. Bob is the same this morning. Holding his foot off the floor and limping if he uses all four so I think I am going to take him to the vets. The more I look at his foot the more it does look like a broken toe nail but clearly I am no expert so I'm going to take him to see the vet.

mistlethrush · 16/11/2013 09:39

TooOld - better to do that - particularly if your vets have a Sat am surgery.

Mistlehound is still a bit sore this morning (not surprising) but she's managed a mooch around the garden and is currently demanding to be stroked.

TooOldForGlitter · 16/11/2013 11:03

Couldnt get him in until 3.15 as they were full but squeezed him in. Not planning on walking him today, would you agree that's sensible? Feel sorry for him tbh but until I know what is wrong with him I dont want to make anything worse by walking him.

Hope mistlehound makes a speedy recovery poor girl.

mistlethrush · 16/11/2013 11:09

Yes, don't walk him - you can always take him out afterwards, but he's not using it now, so don't make him. I would also not feed him between now and then just in case.

TooOldForGlitter · 16/11/2013 11:15

Thanks mistle

cinnamongreyhound · 16/11/2013 11:18

Bless him, poor bob. I wouldn't walk him, just let him have a wander in the garden.

Glad mistlehound is able to chill out even if she's not quite her normal self :)

PatTheHammer · 16/11/2013 11:22

Ahh poor Bob. Hope it's nothing serious and just a small breakage in the nail.

I bought a zoom groom this morning as madam keeps getting quite a lot of flecks of dried mud on her undercarriage. Well, after saying that I don't think she dropped hair much.....OMG! So much hair coming out with the brushing. Could this be her kennel coat falling out? She seems pretty sleek anyway and not very fluffy.

Balls of dog hair all over my garden now!

cinnamongreyhound · 16/11/2013 11:48

Peanut lost loads of fur and had lots of dandruffy type stuff too. Took a month probably for it to all come out and he now doesn't loose a lot. He is very fluffy for a greyhound though, people always comment on it :)

mistlethrush · 16/11/2013 14:00

Zoom grooms are very good - mistlehound seems to like the feel of it which helps a lot.
